Melodic-Rock made in Sweden, zuhause bei Frontiers Records

Melodic-Rock steht als Genre-Angabe zum neusten Album der 2007 in Schweden gegründeten CAP OUTRUN. Ein Etikettenschwindel, wie sich beim Hören von «High On Deception» herausstellt. Denn das Album bietet viel mehr als «nur» Melodic-Rock. Mit einer Vorliebe für vertrackte Takte bietet der erste Longplayer eine Prise Prog Rock, der immer mal wieder eingestreut wird. Da und dort wird dem vor Allem von TOTO, CHICAGO und Konsorten zelebrierte West-Coast AOR gehuldigt. Allgemein ist der Einfluss von TOTO auf vielen Tracks spürbar, wenngleich es weniger deren kommerzielle Hits sind, welche sich in den Arrangements auf «High On Deception» wiederfinden.

Andrée Theander (Guitars) und Erik Wiss (Keyboards) haben die Band 2007 gegründet, ergänzt wurde sie dann durch Chandler Mogel (OUTLOUD) am Mikrofon, Carl Tudén an den Drums (CREYE) und Linus Abrahamson am Bass.

Neben den bereits erwähnten Melodic-Rock, AOR und Prog-Rock Elementen finden sich auch fusionlastige («My Destination») und jazzige («Shadows On The Wall») Parts, ebenso wie – allerdings wenige – hard-rockigere Teile und mit «Dopamine Overflow» sogar ein waschechtes Instrumental, welches sämtliche Stile in sich vereinigt. Und wer nun denkt, dass CAP OUTRUN ein stilistisches Flickwerk an Songs abliefern, irrt. Denn die Band versteht es, alle Einflüsse und Genres gekonnt zu verweben, dem ganzen Album einen roten Faden zu verpassen und in den Refrains zu ohrschmeichelnden Melodien zurückzukehren. Zwar fehlt der «Über-Hit», dafür gibt es im Gegenzug auch keine Schwächen und viele grosse Momente.

Fazit

CAP OUTRUN gelingt ein stilistisch interessantes Album, das nie langweilt. «High On Deception» kann man sowohl im Hintergrund vor sich her dudeln lassen, oder aber aktiv zuhören und viele kleine musikalische Details erhaschen. Ein gelungener Erstling, der Vorfreude auf mehr weckt.

Melodic rock is the genre description of the latest album by CAP OUTRUN, founded in Sweden in 2007. A label fraud, as it turns out when listening to „High On Deception“. Because the album offers much more than „just“ melodic rock. With a preference for tricky bars, the first longplayer offers a pinch of prog rock, which is sprinkled in every now and then. Here and there, homage is paid to the West-Coast AOR celebrated above all by TOTO, CHICAGO and their ilk. In general, the influence of TOTO is noticeable on many tracks, although it is less their commercial hits that are found in the arrangements on „High On Deception“.

In addition to the melodic rock, AOR and prog rock elements already mentioned, there are also fusion-heavy („My Destination“) and jazzy („Shadows On The Wall“) parts, as well as – albeit few – harder-rocking parts and, with „Dopamine Overflow“, even a genuine instrumental that unites all styles. And whoever thinks that CAP OUTRUN deliver a stylistic patchwork of songs is mistaken. The band knows how to skilfully interweave all influences and genres, to give the whole album a red thread and to return to ear-pleasing melodies in the choruses. Although the „über-hit“ is missing, in return there are no weaknesses and many great moments.

CAP OUTRUN succeeds in creating a stylistically interesting album that never bores. „High On Deception“ can be left to drone on in the background, or actively listened to and catch many little musical details. A successful first album that awakens anticipation for more.
