BURNING WITCHES – „The Witch Of The North“
Die Walpurgisnacht ist schon vorbei, kommt das neue Album der Schweizer Powermetal-Hexen zu spät?

Seit die Truppe auf den Plan getreten ist, bin ich etwas gespalten; wie künstlich ist die Band, wer macht den Sound, ist der kreative Kopf?
Schon früh hat mich das Gefühl beschlichen, dass es sich um eine „gecastete“ Band handelt – und ich mag völlig daneben liegen. Wenig zu meiner positiven Grundhaltung hat beigetragen, dass mit Seraina Telli die bessere Sängerin die Band verlassen hat, als mit Laura Guldemond neu eingestiegen ist. Überhaupt – für ihre kurze Bandgeschichte wurde das Lineup schon gehörig durchgeschüttelt. Besonders der Job am Sechssaiter war bisher eher ein „Sprungbrett“…
Das sind aber ein sehr persönlich gefärbter Gusto und eine historische Rezeption, also kein Grund, das neue Album bereits schlecht zu machen, jawoll! Letztlich sind die Hexen nicht die einzige Band, deren Lineup ausschliesslich aus gut aussehenden Mädels besteht und die trotzdem gute Mucke hinkriegen.
Also, dann wollen wir doch einmal hören, was die Mädels im neuen Machwerk „The Witch Of The North“ so drauf haben. Auf jeden Fall kriegt man einiges fürs Geld; vierzehn Titel Schwermetall ist der Obulus wert. Interessant ist schon der Einstieg ins Hexenwerk; mit „Winter’s Wrath“ gibt es zu Beginn ein chorales, wenn auch kurzes Leckerli.
Ab hier geht es dann mit dem gewohnten Powermetal auf die Reise durch ein Album, dessen Songtitel an eine Auflistung von „Herr Der Ringe“ – Kapiteln erinnern. Die Frauen bewegen sich in einem Genre, welches von vielen ausgezeichneten Truppen beackert wird, wo ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal sehr wichtig ist. Suche ich ein solches Merkmal bei den Schweizerinnen, so dürften es die mehrstimmigen Gesangsparts sein. Hinter den Stimmen steckt viel Power und ich habe noch nicht herausgefunden, ob die Hintergrund-Growls ebenfalls von Laura und Co. stammen, oder ob da noch männliche Zauberer mitwirken.
Als erster Titel holt mich „We Stand As One“ ab – ein metalmässiger Midtempokracher mit wirklich guter Gitarrenarbeit und einer treibenden Lala an den Drums.
„Flight Of The Valkyries“ kündigt sich dann als Powerballade an, verwandelt sich aber nach einiger Zeit in einen Vollgas-Metalnummer. Schade eigentlich, lässt der langsame Part doch Platz für die gesanglichen Möglichkeiten der Band.
Immerhin, „Lady Of The North“ wird dann wieder balladesk, vom Beginn bis zum Ende und lässt Raum für die Mädels an den Gitarren.
Ähnliches kann von „Eternal Frost“ gesagt werden – das ist sowas wie mein Lieblingstrack – eineinhalb Minuten rein instrumentale Arbeit.
Von den schnellen Titeln ist es ausgerechnet der Bonustrack, den ich an die Spitze stellen möchte. „Hall Of The Mountain King“ ist abwechslungsreich, hier überzeugt mich auch die Stimme der Fronthexe. Die Instrumentalistinnen legen eine solide Basis für ihre epischen Gesangsparts, der Track ist mehr also „gut gemacht“. Meine Empfehlung zum Reinhören ist also der zweitlängste Song des Albums. Was mich auch überzeugt – die Saitenarbeit der beiden Gitarrenwitches Romana und Larissa.
Fazit
Nun, wer mich kennt und lesen kann merkt, dass ich die Scheibe nicht abfeiern kann. Es ist ein solides Powermetal-Album, aber die richtigen Kracher fehlen mir, das Besondere, dass dich aufhorchen lässt. Es ist schwierig, sich in diesem Genre zu behaupten und zu etablieren – es gibt einfach zu viele gute bis sehr gute Bands dieser Stilrichtung. Nichts destotrotz kann man sich das ALbum durchaus leisten, nicht nur, wenn man eh Fan ist. Worauf ich aber lieber warte – denn da sind die Witches-Bitches richtig gut aufgehoben – sind die nächsten Liveshows, die wir hoffentlich dieses Jahr noch erleben werden. Empfehlung – kauft die Scheibe und bildet euch ein eigenes Urteil!

Since the troupe came on the scene, I’ve been a bit split; how artificial is the band, who makes the sound, is the creative mind?
Early on, the feeling crept over me that this was a „cast“ band – and I may be completely wrong.
The fact that Seraina Telli, the better singer, left the band when Laura Guldemond joined, did not contribute much to my positive attitude. In general – for their short band history, the line-up has been shaken up quite a bit. Especially the job on six-string has been more of a „stepping stone“ so far….
But that’s a very personally coloured gusto and a historical reception, so no reason to badmouth the new album already, yes!
After all, the witches are not the only band whose line-up consists exclusively of good-looking girls and who still manage to make good music.
So, let’s hear what the girls have to offer on their new opus „The Witch Of The North“. In any case, you get a lot for your money; fourteen tracks of heavy metal are worth the money. The introduction to the witchcraft is already interesting; with „Winter’s Wrath“ there is a choral, albeit short treat at the beginning.
From here on, the journey through an album with the usual power metal starts, the song titles of which are reminiscent of a list of „Lord Of The Rings“ chapters.
The women move in a genre that is ploughed by many excellent bands, where a unique selling point is very important. If I look for such a feature in the Swiss women, it would be the polyphonic singing parts. There is a lot of power behind the voices and I have not yet found out whether the background growls also come from Laura and Co. or whether there are male wizards involved.
The first track to pick me up is „We Stand As One“ – a metal midtempo cracker with really good guitar work and a driving Lala on the drums.
„Flight Of The Valkyries“ then announces itself as a power ballad, but turns into a full-throttle metal number after a while. A pity really, as the slow part leaves room for the band’s vocal possibilities.
After all, „Lady Of The North“ becomes ballad-like again, from the beginning to the end and leaves room for the girls on the guitars.
Similar can be said of „Eternal Frost“ – this is something like my favourite track – one and a half minutes of pure instrumental work.
Of all the fast tracks, it is the bonus track that I would like to put at the top. „Hall Of The Mountain King“ is varied, here the voice of the front witch also convinces me. The instrumentalists lay a solid foundation for their epic vocal parts, so the track is more „well done“.
My recommendation to listen in is the second longest song of the album. What also convinces me – the string work of the two guitar witches Romana and Larissa.
Conclusion
Well, those who know me and can read me will notice that I can’t celebrate this album. It’s a solid powermetal album, but the real hits are missing, the something special that makes you sit up and take notice. It’s difficult to assert oneself and establish oneself in this genre – there are simply too many good to very good bands of this style. Nevertheless, you can afford the album, not only if you are a fan. But what I prefer to wait for – because that’s where the witches-bitches are really in good hands – are the next live shows, which we will hopefully experience this year. Recommendation – buy the disc and make up your own mind!
