BAD TOUCH – Bittersweet Satisfaction
Es gibt sie doch noch, die Alben, die einem ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubern, weil sie von Anfang bis Ende einfach nur Spass machen.

Und BAD TOUCH wissen, wie man so ein Album macht. Mit „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ hat der Fünfer aus Norfolk so etwas wie ein Bar-Rock Album für die Strasse gemacht. Inspiriert von den englischen „3 Q“ – die da wären STATUS QUO, QUEEN und QUIREBOYS – liefert die mir bis dato unbekannte Band 10 Songs, die den Sommer nochmals in die gut geheizte Stube bringen. Zugegeben, meine Ohren höhren wenig bis keine Referenzen zu QUEEN und QUO, die QUIREBOYS jedoch sind ein guter Vergleich, wenn auch der Sound von BAD TOUCH weniger Bier und Whisky durchsetzter Pub-Rock N Roll ist. Dafür wurde eine gute Prise DEAD DAISIES dazu gemischt. Und fertig ist das 10 Gänge Menu.
Den Anfang macht „Slip Away“, ein up-tempo Kracher, der den Weg für den Rest des Albums schon mal vorspurt. Knackiger Riff-Rock mit dröhnender Hammond-Untermalung und einem lüpfigen Mitsing-Refrain. Man kann sich noch so dagegen sträuben: Unweigerlich fangen Kopf und Bein sanft an, im Takt mitzuwippen. „This Life“ geht es dezent langsamer an und würde an der Pop-Chart-Music Akademie für Luftsprünge sorgen, haut der erste Refain doch nach weniger als 30 Sekunden rein! Muss er wohl auch, denn mit 2:22 ist dies der kürzeste Song auf dem Album. Und weiter geht es mit „Spend My Days“ der sich Nahtlos in die musikalische Richtung eingliedert, ohne sich jedoch zu wiederholen. Überhaupt sind die 10 Songs auf „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ trotz eines eindeutig erkennbaren roten Fadens allesamt eigenständig und jeder von ihnen könnte als Single ausgekoppelt werden.
Der Titelsong wühlt zu Anfang kräftig in der musikalischen Schatztruhe der 70er , bevor er einmal mehr in einen Mitsing-Refrain mündet. Die Band hat wahrlich ein Gespür für einfache, aber dennoch wirksame Refrains und Melodien, die so manches Live-Publikum zum mitsingen animieren dürften – selbst wenn man die Songs zum ersten Mal hört! „Nothing Wrong With That“ tritt etwas auf die Bremse und grooved in seinem blues-rockigen Gospelgewand die Hütte. Es folgen „Taste This“ – ein angefunkter mid-tempo Rocker der wiederum ein ganz neues Songbild vermittelt, „Tonight“, „Come Back Again“ bei dem BAD TOUCH ein wenig auf die Kitsch- und Tränendrüse drückt und „See It“. Das Album schliesst mit „Dizzy For You“, in welchem Hammond und Backing-/Gospelchöre nochmals einen grossen Auftritt haben. Ein würdiger Abschluss.
Fazit
Mit „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ gelingt BAD TOUCH ein tolles Album, dessen einziger Schwachpunkt ist, dass es irgendwann zu Ende ist. BAD TOUCH erfinden weder den Rock neu noch geben sie vor, wahnsinnig innovativ zu sein. Sie machen nichts weiter, als 10 tolle, eigenständige Songs zu präsentieren, ohne sich selbst zu wiederholen. Das grooved, das knallt und es mach Spass. Immer und immer und immer und immer wieder.

e road. Inspired by the English „3 Q“ – that would be STATUS QUO, QUEEN and QUIREBOYS – the band, previously unknown to me, delivers 10 songs that bring summer back into the well-heated parlour. Admittedly, my ears hear little to no references to QUEEN and QUO, but the QUIREBOYS are a good comparison, even if the sound of BAD TOUCH is less beer and whisky-infused pub rock n roll. Instead, a good pinch of DEAD DAISIES has been mixed in. And the 10-course menu is ready.
It starts with „Slip Away“, an up-tempo banger that leads the way for the rest of the album. Crisp riff rock with a booming Hammond background and a lively sing-along chorus. No matter how much you resist it, your head and legs will inevitably start to gently bob along to the beat. „This Life“ takes things a little slower and would make you jump for joy at the Pop-Chart-Music Academy, as the first chorus kicks in after less than 30 seconds! It probably has to, because at 2:22, this is the shortest song on the album. And it continues with „Spend My Days“, which fits seamlessly into the musical direction without repeating itself. Despite a clearly recognisable common thread, the 10 songs on „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ are all independent and each of them could be released as a single.
The title track begins by digging deep into the musical treasure chest of the 70s before once again leading into a sing-along chorus. The band truly has a flair for simple yet effective choruses and melodies that are likely to get many a live audience singing along – even if it’s the first time they’ve heard the songs! „Nothing Wrong With That“ puts the brakes on a little and grooves the house in its blues-rock gospel guise. This is followed by „Taste This“ – a funky mid-tempo rocker that once again conveys a completely new song image, „Tonight“, „Come Back Again“, in which BAD TOUCH presses the kitsch and tear ducts a little, and „See It“. The album closes with „Dizzy For You“, in which Hammond and backing/gospel choirs once again make a grand entrance. A worthy conclusion.
Conclusion
With „Bittersweet Satisfaction“, BAD TOUCH have created a great album whose only weak point is that it comes to an end at some point. BAD TOUCH neither reinvent rock nor pretend to be insanely innovative. They do nothing more than present 10 great, independent songs without repeating themselves. It grooves, it bangs and it’s fun. Over and over and over and over again.
