Anne Lill und Harri Koskela von Lost in Grey im Interview
Letzten Freitag kam das neue Album „Odyssey into the Grey“ auf den Markt. Ich hatte konnte zuvor noch mit Anne Lill und Harri Koskela über ihr neues Werk sprechen. Alle Infos von den Beiden findet ihr hier im Interview

Rocknews: Odyssey into the Grey“ ist euer 4. Studioalbum – wie sehr freut ihr euch auf die Veröffentlichung?
Harri: Wir sind in der Tat sehr aufgeregt! Wie bei jedem Album stecken wir unser Herz und unsere Seele hinein, arbeiten so viel, dass es unmöglich ist, die Stunden zu zählen, die wir verbracht haben, und wenn dann das fertige Album veröffentlicht wird, ist es ein Glücksgefühl. Andererseits, da wir uns so lange und intensiv mit etwas beschäftigt haben, kann es auch Gefühle der Leere geben oder vielleicht einen Hauch von Traurigkeit, eine Art Baby-Blues. Deshalb kann ich es kaum erwarten, auf die Bühne zu gehen und diese neuen Songs live zu performen!
Es heißt, ihr seid die theatralischen Metal-Pioniere und einer der vielversprechendsten und inspirierendsten Acts der finnischen Metalszene, würdet ihr dem zustimmen?
Anne Lill: Es gibt viele Bands, die ähnliche Elemente verwenden, wie z.B. verschiedene Sänger, die verschiedene Charaktere spielen usw. Als wir jedoch die Band gründeten und überlegten, wie wir unsere Musik beschreiben könnten, kam ich auf die Beschreibung „theatrical metal“. Damals gab es dafür keine Suchergebnisse im Internet, deshalb kann ich mit gutem Gewissen sagen, dass ich den Begriff erfunden habe, und ich stimme zu, dass wir in diesem Sinne Pioniere in diesem speziellen Bereich sind. Was „vielversprechend und inspirierend“ angeht, fühle ich mich geschmeichelt, wenn uns jemand so beschreibt, aber ich denke, es liegt an den Zuhörern zu entscheiden, ob das stimmt oder nicht.
Das neue Album enthält 8 Songs, die Gesamtspielzeit beträgt über eine Stunde. Wie lange habt ihr daran gearbeitet?
Harri: Ich glaube, bei diesem Album begann der Kompositionsprozess im März 2022 und ich habe etwa 2-3 Monate damit verbracht, aktiv zu komponieren, zu arrangieren und Demo-Versionen der Songs aufzunehmen. Dann sind wir im Juni 2022 ins Studio gegangen und haben das Ganze in ca. 6 Monaten in einem ruhigen Tempo aufgenommen. Danach hat Jonas (Kjellgren vom Black Lounge Studio in Schweden) das Ganze gemischt und gemastert und Anfang Februar 2023 war es fertig. Wir haben ein paar Tage in Schweden verbracht, zusammen mit den Damen und Jonas, um den Mixen den letzten Schliff zu geben, und ich kann nur sagen, dass ich sehr glücklich darüber bin, wie das Ganze geworden ist. Insgesamt also etwa 10 Monate oder so. Normalerweise „sammle ich meine Inspirationen“ für eine ganze Weile, was bedeutet, dass ich nicht die ganze Zeit so viel komponiere, aber wenn die Zeit gekommen ist, kommen die Songs in einem großen Schwung heraus.
Hast du einen Lieblingssong auf „Odyssey into the Grey“?
Harri: Das ist wirklich schwer zu sagen, aber wenn ich etwas herausgreifen müsste, wäre es vielleicht der Titelsong ‚Odyssey into the Grey‘ oder ‚The Bottomless Pit‘. Beide haben ziemlich viel Orchestermaterial, was ich als Komponist sehr mag, und die sind auch sehr schön zu spielen. Aber natürlich gibt es in jedem Song Dinge, die ihn für mich besonders und lieb machen, so dass es unmöglich ist, nur einen, zwei oder sogar drei Favoriten auszuwählen. Letztendlich würde ich also sagen, dass alle Songs meine Favoriten sind.
Anne Lill: Nun, da alle Alben und Songs miteinander verbunden sind, ist es schwer, einen Favoriten zu bestimmen. Was den Prozess des Songwritings angeht, finde ich die Prozesse von „Hailuoto“ und „Vem Kan Segla Förutan Vind“ am interessantesten für mich.
Worum geht es im Albumtitel? und beim Hören von „Odyssey into the Grey“ hatte ich das Gefühl, dass es eine Geschichte erzählt. Liege ich damit richtig?
Anne Lill: Die Grey Realm Saga ist eine Geschichte, die sich über alle vier Alben erstreckt (und wer weiß, vielleicht auch über zukünftige?). Es ist eine Geschichte über eine junge Person, Lillian, die versucht, den Grausamkeiten der Welt zu entkommen, und an einem Ort namens Graue Reiche landet. Dort trifft Lillian auf zwei merkwürdige Gestalten, die Herrscher dieses Ortes, Odessa und Patrick. Zunächst scheint der Ort ein Paradies zu sein, doch nach und nach entdeckt Lillian, dass die Dinge nicht so sind, wie sie scheinen, und sie lernt auch einiges über sich selbst. Der Titel „Odyssey into the Grey“ bezieht sich auf diese Reise, und je nachdem, wie der Hörer sie interpretiert, kann sie sich auf eine konkrete oder eine eher introspektive Reise beziehen.
Du hast bereits 3 Musikvideos veröffentlicht. Wie haben die Leute in eurem Umfeld und eure Fans darauf reagiert?
Harri: Das Feedback war absolut herzerwärmend! Vor allem, weil wir eigentlich nicht diese 3-4 Minuten Radiohits“ machen und ich das Gefühl habe, dass unsere Musik dem Hörer einiges abverlangt, daher war es toll, die fantastische Reaktion des Publikums zu hören. Ich kann es kaum erwarten, das ganze Album zu veröffentlichen und zu hören, wie es den Leuten gefallen wird! Wir sind auf jeden Fall stolz und glücklich mit dem Ergebnis!
Gibt es eine Botschaft, die ihr mit diesem Album vermitteln wollt?
Anne Lill: In all den Turbulenzen und Turbulenzen des Lebens ist es leicht, sich in aller Unsicherheit und Verwirrung zu verlieren. Aber es kann auch eine Möglichkeit sein, sich selbst zu entdecken und zu lernen, also ist es nicht unbedingt etwas Schlechtes, sich ab und zu zu verirren. Oder wie der Erzähler sagt: „Was wie eine Odyssee in die Großartigkeit des Grauens erscheinen mag, kann in Wirklichkeit eine Reise zu sich selbst sein, auf der man einen neuen Weg findet“. Vielleicht lädt unsere Musik auch einige Menschen zu solchen neuen Entdeckungen ein.
Ihr seid zu siebt in der Band, ist es da nicht super schwierig, für Proben oder Tourplanung zusammenzukommen?
Harri: Natürlich kann es manchmal herausfordernd sein, aber hey – so ist das Leben nun mal. Wir sind nicht mehr in unseren 20ern, wir haben Familien und „Tagesjobs“, um die wir uns kümmern müssen, Leute spielen vielleicht in anderen Bands usw., also ist es im Grunde nur eine Frage der Zeitplanung und des Engagements, und ich denke, dass wir verdammt gut darin sind. Außerdem leben wir zum Glück ziemlich nah beieinander und lieben das, was wir tun 🙂
Was sind eure nächsten Pläne?
Harri: Wir haben so lange und intensiv an diesem Album und der Show zur Albumveröffentlichung gearbeitet, dass das erste, was uns in den Sinn kommt, ein wohlverdienter Kurzurlaub und etwas Ruhe ist. Allerdings suchen wir ständig nach Möglichkeiten, mehr Shows zu spielen und natürlich beginnen wir nach einer gewissen Pause und wenn die Zeit reif ist, neues Material zu schreiben.
Habt ihr vor, auf Tour zu gehen? Wenn ja, könnt ihr uns einige Städte nennen, in die ihr gehen werdet?
Harri: Nun, zum Zeitpunkt, an dem ich dies schreibe, gibt es leider noch keine Tourpläne, abgesehen von ein paar geplanten Shows in Finnland. Wir sind jedoch ständig auf der Suche nach Möglichkeiten, in Europa und dem Rest der Welt zu touren, also alle Promoter, Bands und Booking-Agenten, die das hier lesen; behaltet uns im Hinterkopf und meldet euch bei uns, wenn ihr eine theatralische Metal-Show in eurem Billing haben wollt 😉
Wollt ihr euren Fans etwas mitteilen?
Anne Lill: Simone de Beauvoir hat in den 1940er Jahren etwas geschrieben, das meiner Meinung nach nie veraltet ist: „Die Tatsache, dass wir Menschen sind, ist unendlich viel wichtiger als all die Besonderheiten, die die Menschen voneinander unterscheiden.“ Bei all den Konflikten, die auch jetzt in der Welt stattfinden, ist das etwas, an das wir uns hoffentlich alle erinnern können.

Rocknews: Odyssey into the Grey“ is your 4th Studio Album – how excited are you for the release?
Harri: We are indeed very excited! Just like with any album, we pour our hearts and souls into it, work so much that it’s impossible to keep track of the hours used, so when the final album is released.. it’s a bliss. Then again as we have been working so intensively with something for such a long time, there might also be feelings of emptiness or maybe a hint of some sort of sadness, a sort of baby blues. Which is why I cannot wait to get to hit the stage and perform these new songs live!
It says that you are the theatrical metal pioneers and one of the most promising and inspiring acts coming from the Finnish metal scene, would you agree with that?
Anne Lill: There are multiple bands that use similar elements such as different singers playing different characters etc. However, when we started the band and tried to think of ways to describe the music, I came up with the description “theatrical metal”. There were no internet search results for that at the time, which is why I can say with confidence I came up with the term, and agree that yes, in that sense we are pioneers in that specific field. As for “promising and inspiring”, I feel flattered if someone describes us in such a way,, but I guess it’s up to the listeners to determine if that’s true or not.
The new album contains 8 Songs, the total playing time is over one hour. How long have you been working on it?
Harri: I think with this album the composing process started maybe in March 2022 and I spent some 2-3 months actively composing, arranging and recording demo versions of the songs. Then we hit the studio in June 2022 and recorded the whole thing in approx 6 months with an easy pace. After that Jonas (Kjellgren from Black Lounge Studio in Sweden) mixed and mastered the whole thing and in early February 2023 it was finished. We spent a few days in Sweden together with the ladies with Jonas doing the final touches to the mixes, and all I can say that I’m most happy how it all turned out. So overall, approximately some 10 months or so. I usually ‘gather my inspiration’ for quite a while, meaning that I don’t compose that much all the time, but when the time comes, the songs come out in one huge burst.
Do you have a favourite song on „Odyssey into the Grey“
Harri: That’s really hard to say in general, but if I’d have to pick out something it’d maybe be the title song ‘Odyssey into the Grey’ or ‘The Bottomless Pit’. Both have quite a lot of orchestral stuff, which I’m quite fond of as a composer and also those are really nice to play too. However, there are things of course in every song that makes them special and dear to me, so usually it’s impossible to just pick one, two or even three favourites. So in the end, I’d say all of the songs are my favourites.
Anne Lill: Well, as all the albums and songs are connected to each other, it’s hard to pick any favourites. As for the songwriting process I find the processes of “Hailuoto” and “Vem Kan Segla Förutan Vind” most interesting for me.
What’s the Album-title about? and while listening to „Odyssey into the Grey“ it felt like it’s telling a story. Am I right with that ?
Anne Lill: The Grey Realm saga is a story that overarches all four albums (and who knows, maybe future ones as well?). It’s a story about a young person, Lillian, who tries to escape the cruelties of the world, and ends up in a place called the Grey Realms. There Lillian meets two peculiar characters, the rulers of that place, Odessa and Patrick. At first the place seems like paradise, but slowly Lillian starts to discover that things are not as they seem, and she starts learning things about herself as well. The title ”Odyssey into the Grey” refers to this journey, and depending on the listener’s interpretation, it may refer to a concrete or a more introspective one.
You’ve already released 3 musicvideos. How did the people in your surroundings and your fans react to that?
Harri: The feedback has been absolutely heartwarming! Especially as we’re not actually making these 3-4 minute “radio hits” and I feel our music demands quite a lot from the listener, so it’s been great to hear the fantastic response from the audience. Can’t wait to release the whole album and hear how people will like it! We certainly are proud and happy with the result!
Is there a message you want to tell with this album?
Anne Lill: In all the turbulences and turmoils of life, it is easy to get lost in all insecurity and confusion. But it can also be a possibility for self discovery and learning, so getting a bit lost now and then is not necessarily a bad thing. Or as the Narrator says: “what may seem as an odyssey into the grandness of the Grey may in fact be a journey into yourself, and finding a new way”. Perhaps our music may invite some people into such new discoveries as well.
There are seven of you in the band, isn’t it super hard to get together for rehearsals or tour planning?
Harri: Of course it can be challenging at times, but hey – that’s just life. We’re not in our 20’s anymore, we have families and “day jobs” to take care of, people might play in other bands etc., so it’s basically just a matter of scheduling and dedication, and I feel that we’re quite damn good at it. Also luckily we live quite near each other and love doing what we do. 🙂
What are your upcoming plans?
Harri: We have been working so intensively on this album and the album release show for so long, that first that comes to mind is taking a well-earned mini vacation and some rest. However we are constantly looking for opportunities to do more shows, and obviously starting to write more new material, after some rest and when the time feels right..
Are you planning to go on tour? If yes, are you willing to tell us some cities you’re going to ?
Harri: Well, unfortunately at the time of writing this there are no touring plans scheduled yet, except for a couple of shows planned in Finland. However, we are constantly looking for possibilities to tour in Europe and the rest of the world, so all promoters, bands & booking agents reading this; keep us in mind and reach out to us if you want a kick ass theatrical metal show in your billing. 😉
Do you want to tell your Fans something?
Anne Lill: Simone de Beauvoir wrote something in the 1940’s that in my opinion never gets outdated: “The fact that we are human beings is infinitely more important than all the peculiarities that distinguish human beings from one another.” With all the conflicts happening in the world also now, it’s something I hope we all could remember.
