Das soll jetzt nicht despektierlich gemeint sein – natürlich ist die Person Fabienne Erni – wenn auch noch jung – längst erwachsen. Meine Bemerkung zielt auf ihr musikalisches Wachstum. Und bei einer Sängerin, die man bisher als Mitglied zweier Bands kennt, bietet ein Soloalbum einen neuen Blick darauf, wo sie steht.
Was Fabienne definitiv nicht mehr beweisen muss – sie kann singen. Ihr Einstieg bei ELUVEITIE war definitiv nicht leicht; da gab es die grossen Fusstapfen ihrer Vorgängerin Anna Murphy und die Frage, ob sie die Akzeptanz der Fans gewinnen würde. Alles Schnee von gestern. Fabienne Erni ist zusammen mit Chrigel Glanzmann längst zum Aushängeschild der Schweizer Pagan-Metaller geworden, die Fans lieben sie. Mit ihrem Sideproject ILLUMISHADE hat sie eine andere musikalische Richtung aufgezeigt – einen ziemlich progressiven Modern Metal. Ich kann mich noch an ein Gespräch mit Chrigel Glanzmann erinnern, als ELUVEITIE nach dem Bruch mit Merlin Sutter, Ivo Henzi und Anna Murphy sich neu aufstellen musste, einige Stellen neu zu besetzen waren. Chrigel hat damals erzählt, dass es einige Überredungskünste brauchte, um die eher schüchterne Fabienne zu gewinnen. Auch das ist Schnee von gestern, von Schüchternheit keine Spur mehr.
Und wohin geht die Reise mit „Starveil“? Vielleicht nicht direkt zu den Sternen, zumindest aber in diese Richtung. 13 Tracks bietet das Album, knapp vierzig Minuten Musik. Aber was für Musik? Auf jeden Fall ein Album, das durch die Stimme der Frontfrau dominiert wird. Und sonst? Irgendwie erinnert es mich an die Wurzeln bei ELUVEITIE – da ist viel Folkmetal drin – inklusive Flöten im Hintergrund. Ein weiteres, bestimmendes Element sind die Melodien. Die Scheibe liefert viel davon, quasi eine Hookline nach der anderen. Damit reiht sie sich in die Tradition von Sängerinnen wie Sharon Den Adel, Floor Jansen oder Simone Simons ein. Was mir gefällt – die Attitüde von „klassische Ausbildung“, wie wir sein von Floor Jansen oder gar Tarja Turunen kennen, fällt weg.
Auf dem Album empfängt sie auch einen illustren Gast; Lena Scissorhands von INFECTED RAIN duettiert bei „Ritual“ – einem epischen Track mit dem Zusammenspiel zweier grossartiger Stimmen. Dabei fasziniert das Zusammenspiel der eher feinen Stimme Ernis mit Scissorhands growlendem Organ.
Über alles gesehen, hat das Album kaum Makel. Auch wenn die Nähe zu ELUVEITIE nicht zu überhören ist, das Album zeigt sie als reife Sängerin, die ihren musikalischen Platz auch als Solistin gefunden hat.
Das muss – und wird wahrscheinlich – auch nicht bedeuten, dass sie sich nicht entwickeln kann. Sie darf ihrem Einstieg definitiv treu bleiben – und sich zukünftig weiterer spannende Gäste dazuholen. Warum kein Duett mit Alissa White Gluz – nur so als Beispiel. Oder erneut mit Melissa Bonny von THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON und AD INFINITUM
Fazit
Mit iherm Soloalbum zeigt Fabienne Erni zwei Dinge. Einerseits baut ihre Musik auf den Erfahrungen auf, die sie mit ELUVEITIE und ILLUMISHADE gemacht hat, andererseits zeigt es ihre eigene Musikalität, ihren eigenen Stil

This is not meant to be disrespectful – Fabienne Erni is, of course, already an adult, even if she is still young. My comment refers to her musical growth. And for a singer who has previously been known as a member of two bands, a solo album offers a new perspective on where she stands.
What Fabienne definitely no longer has to prove is that she can sing. Her start with ELUVEITIE was definitely not easy; there were the big shoes of her predecessor Anna Murphy to fill and the question of whether she would win the acceptance of the fans. That’s all water under the bridge now. Fabienne Erni, together with Chrigel Glanzmann, has long since become the figurehead of Swiss pagan metal, and the fans love her. With her side project ILLUMISHADE, she has shown a different musical direction – a rather progressive modern metal. I can still remember a conversation with Chrigel Glanzmann when ELUVEITIE had to reposition itself after breaking up with Merlin Sutter, Ivo Henzi and Anna Murphy, and some positions had to be filled. Chrigel said at the time that it took some persuasion to win over the rather shy Fabienne. That’s all water under the bridge now, and there’s no trace of shyness left.
And where is the journey going with „Starveil“? Maybe not directly to the stars, but at least in that direction. The album offers 13 tracks, just under forty minutes of music. But what kind of music? In any case, it’s an album dominated by the frontwoman’s voice. And otherwise? Somehow it reminds me of the roots of ELUVEITIE – there’s a lot of folk metal in it – including flutes in the background. Another defining element is the melodies. The album delivers a lot of them, one hookline after another, so to speak. This puts it in the tradition of singers like Sharon Den Adel, Floor Jansen and Simone Simons. What I like is that the „classical training“ attitude we know from Floor Jansen or even Tarja Turunen is absent.
The album also features an illustrious guest: Lena Scissorhands from INFECTED RAIN sings a duet on „Ritual“ – an epic track showcasing the interplay of two great voices. The interplay between Erni’s rather delicate voice and Scissorhands‘ growling vocals is fascinating.
Overall, the album is virtually flawless. Even though the similarity to ELUVEITIE is unmistakable, the album shows her to be a mature singer who has found her musical niche as a solo artist.
This does not necessarily mean that she cannot develop further, and she probably will. She can definitely remain true to her debut and bring in more exciting guests in the future. Why not a duet with Alissa White Gluz, for example? Or again with Melissa Bonny from THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON and AD INFINITUM?
Conclusion
With her solo album, Fabienne Erni demonstrates two things. On the one hand, her music builds on the experiences she has had with ELUVEITIE and ILLUMISHADE, and on the other hand, it showcases her own musicality and style.
