Hohe Temperaturen. Hohe Erwartungen. Und ein Line-up, das nicht nur den Asphalt der Plateia Nerou in Athen zum Schmelzen bringen würde.
Der legendäre Veranstaltungsort am Meer war Schauplatz einer mit Spannung erwarteten Metal-Nacht dieses Sommers – ein donnerndes Doppelkonzert mit AVENGED SEVENFOLD und PALAYE ROYALE im Rahmen des Release Athens Festivals 2025.
Ich kam am Vortag direkt aus Bulgarien, hatte gerade meine offizielle Fotoakkreditierung erhalten und wusste, dass das Wochenende intensiv werden würde. Was ich nicht erwartet hatte, war die drückende Hitze – über 35 °C und kaum ein Lüftchen am Wasser. Dennoch strömten die Leute weiter herbei. Einheimische, Touristen und eine bemerkenswerte Anzahl von Fans in Avenged-T-Shirts füllten den Platz, der brodelte schon Stunden vor Beginn der Show vor Energie.
Der Abend begann mit dem extravaganten Rock-Chaos von PALAYE ROYALE mit den Brüdern Remington Leith, Sebastian Danzig und Emerson Barrett – allerdings fehlte Danzig diesmal. Trotzdem spielte die Band ohne einen einzigen Fehler. Ihr Set umfasste ihre gesamte Diskografie, vom explosiven Opener „Nightmares” bis zum emotionalen Schlussstück „Lonely”, das ihrer Mutter gewidmet war. Die Menge tobte bei „Mr. Doctor Man” und „Little Bastards” und sang jeden einzelnen Text mit.
Remington, der energiegeladene Frontmann, war in Höchstform: Er surfte auf einem aufblasbaren Floß über die Menge, kletterte auf den Soundturm, tanzte zwischen den Fans und schlich sogar ein paar Zeilen aus „People Are Strange” von THE DOORS ein. Er beherrschte die Bühne – und den gesamten Platz – und sicherte sich damit seinen Platz unter den dynamischsten Frontmännern der Gegenwart.
Als die Nacht über Athen hereinbrach, wurde AVENGED SEVENFOLD mit einer Welle von Jubel begrüßt, als sie unter den pulsierenden Neonlichtern von Kavinskys „Nightcall“ die Bühne betraten. Die Menge tobte, als sie mit „Game Over“ loslegten, und von diesem Moment an gab es kein Halten mehr.
Ihr allererster Auftritt in Griechenland war eine makellose Meisterleistung des modernen Metal. Höhepunkte? Zu viele, um sie alle aufzuzählen – aber hier sind einige, die mir noch immer in den Ohren klingen: der Fan-Favorit „Afterlife“, das atemberaubende Solo von Synyster Gates während „The Stage“, das emotionale Lichtermeer während „So Far Away“ und natürlich „Bat Country“, „Unholy Confessions“ und „LPFH“.
Der erste Auftritt von AVENGED SEVENFOLD in Griechenland hat die Erwartungen nicht nur erfüllt, sondern übertroffen. Eines ist sicher: Diese Nacht beim „Release Athens 2025“ wird als eine der legendärsten des Festivals in die Geschichte eingehen.

High temperatures. High expectations. And a lineup ready to melt more than just the pavement at Plateia Nerou in Athens. The iconic seaside venue played host to an anticipated metal nights of the summer – a thunderous double feature with Avenged Sevenfold and Palaye Royale as part of the Release Athens Festival 2025.

Coming straight from Bulgaria the day before, freshly approved for official photo accreditation, I knew the weekend would be intense. What I didn’t expect was just how oppressive the heat would be – over 35°C, with barely a breeze by the waterfront. Still, the crowd kept coming. Locals, tourists, and a noticeable number of fans flooded the space in Avenged tees, buzzing with energy hours before showtime.
The evening opened with the flamboyant rock chaos of Palaye Royale, featuring brothers Remington Leith, Sebastian Danzig, and Emerson Barrett — though this time, Danzig was notably absent. Despite that, the band didn’t miss a beat. Their set covered their entire discography, from the explosive opener Nightmares to the emotional closer Lonely, which was dedicated to their mother. The crowd lit up during Mr. Doctor Man and Little Bastards, shouting every word back at the band.
Remington, the ever-electric frontman, was in full performance mode: crowd surfing on an inflatable raft, climbing the sound tower, dancing among fans, and even sneaking in a few lines from People Are Strange by The Doors. He owned the stage — and the entire square — earning his place among the most dynamic frontmen performing today.
As night fully settled over Athens, a wave of cheers greeted the arrival of Avenged Sevenfold, stepping out under the neon pulse of Kavinsky’s “Nightcall”. The crowd erupted as they launched into Game Over, and from that moment, they didn’t let go.
Their first-ever show in Greece turned out to be a flawless masterclass in modern metal. Highlights? Too many to list — but here are some that still ring in my ears: the fan-favorite “Afterlife”, the jaw-dropping solo by Synyster Gates during “The Stage”, the emotional sea of lights during “So Far Away”, and of course “Bat Country”, “Unholy Confessions”, “LPFH”.
Avenged Sevenfold’s debut performance in Greece didn’t just meet expectations — it obliterated them. One thing’s for sure: this night at Release Athens 2025 will go down as one of the festival’s most legendary.
