WIND ROSE – darf man eigentlich noch Zwergen Metal sagen?
Sie kommen aus Italien, machen Power Metal, den sie aber Zwergen Metal nennen und ihr neues Album „Trollslayer“ ist seit dem 4. Oktober auf dem Markt. Ist das politisch korrekt?

Also, zur Eingangsfrage; darf man das? Ich finde ja. Wer den Begriff Zwerge als schwierig empfindet, bezieht ihn auch kleinwüchsige Menschen. Das ist Blödsinn. Zwerge sind Geschöpfe aus verschiedenen Mythologien. Sie sind dabei nicht klein gewachsene Mitglieder einer „normalwüchsigen“ Gesellschaft – sie sind ein eigenes Volk. Sie zeichnen sich neben ihrer Körpergrösse durch Mut, Kraft und handwerkliches Geschick aus. Gleichzeitig sind sie Alkohol in ausreichender Menge und gutem Essen nicht abgeneigt – Gelage gehören quasi zum Alltagsgeschäft. Für die anderen Gesellschaften waren sie wichtig, weil sie Produkte aus den Bergen holten, die man benötigte, besonders Erze, Edelsteine und Gold. Das führte dazu, dass Zwerge nicht nur bewundert und gleichzeitig gefürchtet waren, sondern auch unermesslich reich. Soweit also zur Einstiegsfrage.
Kommen wir zur Band, den Italienern von WIND ROSE. Das wären dann Gesang: Francesco Cavalieri, Gitarre: Claudio Falconcini, Bass: Cristiano Bertocchi, Schlagzeug: Federico Gatti und Keyboard:
Federico Meranda. Unterwegs ist die Band seit 2009, also gut fünfzehn Jahren. Insgesamt haben sie bisher fünf Studioalben, aufgelegt, in den sozialen Medien haben sie Millionen Views und Follower, mit vielen grossen Bands verwandter Genres waren sie schon auf Tour; Wintersun, Eluveitie, Ensiferum, Finntroll und Epica sind einige davon.
Musikalisch liefern die Metal-Zwerge in Standardgrösse glasklaren Power Metal ohne Schnick Schnack. Viele Texte beziehen sich auf Tolkiens „Ringe“ Saga, in welcher Zwerge ja immer eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Wie hören sich die Tracks an? Da gibt es typische, schnelle Bretter wie etwa „Home Of The Twilight“ und „Dance Of The Axes“, das druckvolle „Legacy Of The Forge“, das folkige Sauflied „The Great Feast Underground“ mit der eingängigen Hookline „Alcohol – We’re Drinking Alcohol“.
Etwas anders ist der Opener „Of Ice And Blood“; getragen, symphonisch und sehr melodisch. Der Track führt quasi ins Album ein, zeichnet eine Landschaft, die auf das folgende Epos vorbereitet. Dass Keyboards durchaus auch im Metal ihre Berechtigung haben – hier hört man es.
Fazit
„Trollslayer“ ist eine Scheibe in der Tradition der Band, gegenüber dem letzten Silberling etwas härter, konsistenter, ein abwechslungsreiches, ein rundes Werk.
Ich kann es jedem Power Metal Fan empfehlen, insbesondere jenen, die sich in der Tolkien’schen Sagenwelt oder den nordischen Mythen wohlfühlen. Die Fans der Band werden das ALbum sowieso schon ihr eigen nennen. Kaufen!

So, back to the initial question; is it okay to use the term? I think so. Those who find the term dwarf difficult to use also refer to small people. That’s nonsense. Dwarfs are creatures from different mythologies. They are not small members of a ‘normal-sized’ society – they are a separate people. In addition to their height, they are characterised by courage, strength and manual dexterity. At the same time, they are not averse to a good amount of alcohol and good food – feasting is part of their daily business, so to speak. They were important for the other societies because they extracted products from the mountains that were needed, especially ores, precious stones and gold. As a result, dwarves were not only admired and feared at the same time, but also immensely rich. So much for the introductory question.
Let’s move on to the band, the Italians from WIND ROSE. The band members are: vocals: Francesco Cavalieri, guitar: Claudio Falconcini, bass: Cristiano Bertocchi, drums: Federico Gatti and keyboards:
Federico Meranda. The band has been on the road since 2009, so for a good fifteen years. They have released a total of five studio albums, have millions of views and followers on social media, and have been on tour with many big bands in related genres; Wintersun, Eluveitie, Ensiferum, Finntroll and Epica are some of them.
Musically, the metal dwarfs deliver crystal-clear power metal without frills. Many of the lyrics refer to Tolkien’s ‘Rings’ saga, in which dwarves always play an important role. What do the tracks sound like? There are typical, fast songs like ‘Home Of The Twilight’ and ‘Dance Of The Axes’, the powerful ‘Legacy Of The Forge’, the folky drinking song ‘The Great Feast Underground’ with the catchy hookline ‘Alcohol – We’re Drinking Alcohol’.
The opener ‘Of Ice And Blood’ is somewhat different; solemn, symphonic and very melodic. The track introduces the album, so to speak, drawing a landscape that prepares for the epic that follows. This is proof that keyboards also have their place in metal.
Conclusion
‘Trollslayer’ is a disc in the tradition of the band, a bit harder, more consistent than the last disc, a varied, well-rounded work.
I can recommend it to every Power Metal fan, especially to those who feel comfortable in the Tolkienian world of legends or the Nordic myths. The fans of the band will already call the album their own anyway. Buy it!
