FEUERSCHWANZ – „Fegefeuer“
Mit „Memento Mori“ haben FEUERSCHWANZ die Charts gestürmt, jetzt kommt der Nachfolger.

Klar, lassen wir die Auflistung der Instrumente weg, wird es übersichtlicher. Dann kommt auf dem neuen Album „Fegefeuer“ ein bekannter Gast hinzu; Fabienne Erni leiht ihre Stimme dem Track „Bastard von Asgard“ – in deutsch und ohne den hauch eines schweizerdeutschen Accent (Akzent auf französisch – können wir Schweizer eben auch 😉 ).
Soweit zur Infrastruktur, nun zum Werk an sich.
FEUERSCHWANZ kann man doch nicht so richtig ernst nehmen, denn eigentlich tun die nichts anderes als Saufen und Rumhuren und dazu etwas Mucke spielen. Allerdings – wollen die überhaupt mehr? Grosse Kultur oder so? Kaum, was FEUERSCHWANZ leisten, ist durchaus ausreichend. „Memento Mori“ hat mich begeistert und zu neun von zehn burning headphones motiviert. Und jetzt das Nachfolgealbum – kommt nciht ganz an den Vorgänger ran. Dazu war der Titelsong des letzten Albums zu gut, „Krampus“ hat gut Partylaune verbreitet und „Rohirrim“ war ebenfalls beeindruckend.
Naja, schlecht ist auch die neue Scheibe nicht – die Zusammenarbeit mit Napalm Records verleiht irgendwie Stabilität. Für eingefleischte Fans ist die Scheibe ja eh ein Muss, sie kommen mit dem Musikmix auch auf ihre Rechnung. Gleich beim ersten Track bin ich etwas erschrocken – war mir da irgendwie ein SABATON-Album untergerutscht? Der Schreck hat sich nach einigen Takten verflüchtigt, auch wenn dieser Song des Drachentöters sehr nahe an den Powermetal der Schweden heranreicht. Auf den ersten „Blick“ klingt die Zeile „Sveinn ok sveinn,;hverjum ertu svein of borinn?“ auch schwedisch – ist es auch irgendwie, die Zele stammt aus den „Erzählungen Fafnirs“, also den altnordischen Heldenliedern – hier geht es um den Kampf und Sieg gegen den Drachen „Fáfnir„.
Auf diesen Schreck muss dann was Erholsameres kommen – „Bastard von Asgard“ mit Unterstützung von Fabienne Erni (ELUVEITIE) ist dann eine Mischung aus Partyhymne und Metaltrack. Schön fetzig, aber so richtig aus den Socken hauen eigentlich nur die Screams zu Beginn des Tracks. Aber fürs Partyzelt mit viel Met und Schnaps und Wildschein und Huren – warum nicht?
Mich catcht man ja am ehesten mit Geschichten aus Sagen und Legenden – und hier haben FEUERSCHWANZ die stärksten Tracks angesiedelt. „Highlander“ beispielsweise ist vom Songwriting her typisch für FEUERSCHWANZ – und stark! Der Song geht fadengerade Richtung Ziellinie und animiert zum Headbangen-und-Bier-aus-dem-Horn-saufen. Dann wäre da noch die Geschichte um Artus und Merlin und Co. Die Heilerin Morgaine Le Fay oder die Fee Morgana oder eben „Morrigan“ ist eine der zentralen Figuren dieser Legende – wenn auch oder gerade weil sie sehr unterschiedlich interpretiert wird. FEUERSCHWANZ haben daraus einen eingängigen Track gemacht – viel choralen Gesang, einen Hook, den man sofort mitträllern kann.
Alles in Allem hat das Album keine Schwächen, es entspricht den Erwartungen, die man an FEUERSCHWANZ stellen darf – nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Der herausragende Track wie „Memento Mori“ bietet das ALbum leider nicht. Das ist für einmal Jammern auf hohem Niveau.
Fazit
FEUERSCHWANZ können Party, sind eine absolute Liveband, gehören auf die grossen Bühnen – dazu liefert auch „Fegefeuer“ genügend gutes Material. Ein Heimspiel werden die Jungs ganz bestimmt am kommenden SUMMERBREEZE Openair haben – und bestimmt werden sie den einen oder anderen Track von diesem Album spielen. Und ja, das Teil darf man sich gerne leisten – als Mittelalter- oder Partyfan oder Metalfreund – kaufen!

Sure, if we leave out the listing of instruments, it becomes clearer. Then on the new album „Fegefeuer“ a well-known guest is added; Fabienne Erni lends her voice to the track „Bastard von Asgard“ – in German and without a hint of a Swiss-German accent (accent in French – we Swiss can do that too 😉 ).
So much for the infrastructure, now for the work itself.
FEUERSCHWANZ can’t be taken seriously, because they don’t do anything else than drinking and whoring and playing some music. However – do they want more? Big culture or something? Hardly, what FEUERSCHWANZ do is quite sufficient. „Memento Mori“ thrilled me and motivated me to nine out of ten burning headphones. And now the follow-up album – doesn’t quite match its predecessor. The title song of the last album was too good for that, „Krampus“ spread a good party mood and „Rohirrim“ was also impressive.
Well, the new disc is not bad either – the cooperation with Napalm Records somehow gives stability. For die-hard fans the disc is a must anyway, they also get their money’s worth with the music mix. Right at the first track I was a bit startled – had I somehow slipped in a SABATON album? The fright has evaporated after a few bars, even if this song of the dragon slayer is very close to the power metal of the Swedes. At first „glance“ the line „Sveinn ok sveinn,;hverjum ertu svein of borinn?“ also sounds Swedish – it is somehow, the Zele comes from the „Tales of Fafnir“, so the old Norse heroic songs – here it is about the fight and victory against the dragon „Fáfnir“.
This fright must be followed by something more relaxing – „Bastard of Asgard“ with support from Fabienne Erni (ELUVEITIE) is then a mixture of party anthem and metal track. Nice and groovy, but only the screams at the beginning of the track really knock your socks off. But for the party tent with lots of mead and schnapps and game and whores – why not?
I’m most likely to be caught with stories from sagas and legends – and this is where FEUERSCHWANZ have placed the strongest tracks. „Highlander“ for example is typical for FEUERSCHWANZ in terms of songwriting – and strong! The song goes straight to the finish line and animates to headbanging and drinking beer from the horn. Then there is the story of Arthur and Merlin and Co. The healer Morgaine Le Fay or the fairy Morgana or just „Morrigan“ is one of the central figures of this legend – even if or just because it is interpreted very differently. FEUERSCHWANZ have made a catchy track out of it – a lot of choral singing, a hook that you can immediately sing along with.
All in all, the album has no weaknesses, it meets the expectations that one may place on FEUERSCHWANZ – no more and no less. The outstanding track like „Memento Mori“ offers the album unfortunately not. That is for once complaining on a high level.
Conclusion
FEUERSCHWANZ can party, are an absolute live band, belong on the big stages – and „Fegefeuer“ delivers enough good material for that. The guys will definitely have a home game at the upcoming SUMMERBREEZE Openair – and they will certainly play one or the other track from this album. And yes, you can afford the part – as a medieval or party fan or metal friend – buy it!
