LEATHER LEONE? Woher kennt man die Frau, irgendwie ist der Name vertraut, und aufgrund der Musik scheint sie auch etwas Erfahrung zu haben? Klar, LEATHER ist seit gut vierzig Jahren im Geschäft. Ihre ersten Sporen hat sie sich als Fronterin der Band CHASTAIN verdient – der Kapelle des genialen Ausnahmegitarristen David T. Chastain. Seither ist einiges geschehen, sind einige Veröffentlichungen erschienen, seien es Projekte mit anderen Bands als auch eigenes Material. Da wäre ihr letztes Soloalbum „Leather II“ zu nennen, das einen sehr guten Eindruck hinterliess. Und wie sieht das mit dem aktuellen Album „We Are The Chosen“ aus?
Mit dem Opener „We Take Back Control“ macht die Band genau das – sie übernimmt die Kontrolle, geht in die Vollen, eröffnet ein Metalfeuerwerk. Das Album startet mit einem fetten Riffing durch Vinnie Tex, treibenden Drums und der kraftvollen Stimmen der Frontfrau. Interessanterweise erfahren wir über die Band nichts mehr, als dass Leather und Tex diese sind. Eines ist klar, diese Power kriegt kein Duo hin. Unterstützung während der Studioarbeit erhielt das Duo von Braulio Drumond und Fernando Campos, welche für die Drums verantwortlich sind, sowie Keyboarder Douglas Pinella.
In weiteren Songs stellen die Metallady und ihr Gitarrist klar, dass sie einerseits schon immer böse waren „Always Been Evil“, aber auch die Auserwählten sind „We Are The Chosen“ – wenn das kein Selbstbewusstsein ist, keine Ansage. Stimmlich klingt Leone für mich wie – Biff Byford, der SAXON Fronter. Interessanterweise gilt das sowohl für die Stimmfarbe als auch für die Intensität. Damit stellt sich für mich die Frage, warum diese Band nicht bekannter ist, nach all diesen Jahren noch nicht weiter vom „Geheimtipp“-Status entfernt. Unmittelbar vor Corona war LEATHER auf guten Weg, verschiedenste Konzerte und Festivalauftritte standen auf dem Programm. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass diese Chancen wieder kommen, wir die Gelegenheit haben werden, dieses Album live auf europäischen Bühnen zu hören.
Fazit
Wie weiter oben schon erwähnt, das Album ist ein Kracher, ein geradliniges Stück Metal. Es erfindet den Metal nicht neu, ist in dem Sinne auch nicht innovativ. Die Geradlinigkeit des Sounds zusammen mit der grandiosen Gitarrenarbeit und der Kracherstimme der Frontfrau machen das Album aber zu einem guten Stück Musik, das man sich durchaus anschaffen darf.

LEATHER LEONE? Where does one know the woman from, somehow the name is familiar, and based on the music she also seems to have some experience? Sure, LEATHER has been in the business for a good forty years. She earned her first spurs as the front woman of the band CHASTAIN – the band of the ingenious guitarist David T. Chastain. Since then, a lot has happened, several releases have appeared, be it projects with other bands or her own material. There is their last solo album „Leather II“, which left a very good impression. And what about the current album „We Are The Chosen“?
With the opener „We Take Back Control“, the band does just that – they take control, go full out, open a metal firework. The album starts with fat riffing by Vinnie Tex, driving drums and the powerful vocals of the front woman. Interestingly, we learn nothing more about the band than that Leather and Tex are them. One thing is clear, no duo can pull off this power. During the studio work, the duo received support from Braulio Drumond and Fernando Campos, who are responsible for the drums, as well as keyboarder Douglas Pinella. In further songs, the metal lady and her guitarist make it clear that on the one hand they have always been evil „Always Been Evil“, but on the other hand they are also the chosen ones „We Are The Chosen“ – if that is not self-confidence, not an announcement. Vocally, Leone sounds to me like – Biff Byford, the SAXON frontman. Interestingly, this applies to the vocal colour as well as the intensity. This raises the question for me why this band is not better known, after all these years still not further from the „insider tip“ status. Immediately before Corona, LEATHER was well on their way, with various concerts and festival appearances on their schedule. Hopefully these chances will come again, we will have the opportunity to hear this album live on European stages.
Conclusion
As mentioned above, the album is a blast, a straightforward piece of metal. It does not reinvent metal, nor is it innovative in that sense. But the straightforwardness of the sound together with the great guitar work and the front woman’s loud voice make the album a good piece of music that you can definitely buy.
