Die Schweizer Progrock-Szene ist überschaubar, ernst zu nehmende Sängerinnen kenne ich eh nur zwei; Anna Murphy von CELLAR DARLING und eben Seraina Tell von DEAD VENUS. Ich sehe beide Frauen ziemlich auf Augenhöhe – wobei Anna Murphy stimmlich vielfältiger ist, Seraina Telli mehr Rock in ihrer Stimme hat. Ich versteige mich da mal zu einem Vergleich mit einer der besten Sängerinnen und Powerfrauen: Seraina Telli erinnert mich bei den rockigen Songs an Melissa Etheridge. Klar. genretechnisch trennt die beiden ziemlich viel – stimmlich finde ich bei beiden Frauen viel Charisma und Energie.
Unterstützt wurde die Sängerin und Gitarristin von Drummer Mike Malloth und Bassist André Gärtner – ein Trio, das musikalisch zum Besten gehört, was die Schweiz aktuell zu bieten hat. Leider hat André die Band verlassen – ohne Streit, einfach, weil manche Lebensentwürfe sich anders entwickeln als geplant. Neu am Instrument mit den dicken Saiten ist Merlin Mattheeuws. Er tritt zwar in grosse Fusstapfen, vermag diese aber allem Anschein nach zu füllen.
Genug der Lobhudelei – was hat das Album zu bieten?
Auf jeden Fall viel Abwechslung! Der Titeltrack „Flowers & Pain“ etwa setzt ein Hausnummer als Rocktrack mit viel Druck und Tiefe – der Sound hämmert sich nicht nur in die Eingeweide, sondern zeigt gleich zu Beginn, was Frau Telli stimmlich drauf hat. Und hier – Melissa lässt grüssen! Ansonsten liefern Bass und Drums, etwas, was bei einem Trio eher auffällt als bei grösseren Kapellen – ein extrem präzises und kraftvolles Fundament.
„Lily Of The Valley“ bietet ein breites Angebot an Soundelementen – einerseits Tellis wandelbare Stimme, sei es als verspielte Anleihe zur Klassik oder als ausgebuffte Rockröhre, andererseits fette Rockparts und sanfte Akustikgitarrenparts.
„Plaything Doll“ bietet dann progressiven Rock vom Feinsten; ineinander verwoben werden kompakte Rockpassagen mit epischen Gesangsparts – der Range dieser Frau ist unglaublich. Nicht vergessen werden darf, dass sie neben ihrer Stimme die meisten Songs beisteuert und damit nicht nur Frontfrau sondern auch kreativer Kopf der Band ist.
So erstaunt es auch nicht, dass mit „Haunted House“ eine besinnliche, tiefgründige Nummer aufwartet, ähnlich bei „Revelation Of Hate“. „Little King“ ist hingegen spielerisch und groovy – eine unbeschwerte Rocknummer.
Spannend auch, dass Papa Moll’s Tochter ein Song gewidmet wird – und zwar ein Track, der ziemlich viel Jazz im Blut hat. Das ist die ideale Nummer für den verrauchten Club im intimen Rahmen, nahe am Publikum. Auch dieser Track ist nicht alleine auf dem Album – „The Release“ spielt auf einem ähnlichen Boden – acht Minuten melodischer „Freejazz“, versetzt mir Funk und gesanglichen Punkfacetten à la Nina Hagen.
Jetzt hab ich was getan, was ich sonst eigentlich vermeide – ich habe zu sämtlichen Songs was gesagt. Also kann ich das auch zum letzten Track auf dem Album machen – mit „Keeps You Alive“ schliesst sich in kurzen zwei Minuten ein Kreis, öffnet sich ein Fenster in eine ruhigen Raum…
Fazit
MIt „Flowesr & Pain“ lösen DEAD VENUS ein Versprechen ein, das sie mit ihrem letzten Album gegeben haben – sich weiter zu entwickeln, reifer zu werden und die Fans noch stärker zu erfreuen. Hut ab vor einer Frau und ihrer Band, die sich in der Rock- und Metalszene zuhause fühlen und trotzdem Türen und Fenster in andere musikalische Welten aufstossen – das Album sollte man sich unbedingt antun – kaufen!

The Swiss prog rock scene is manageable, I only know two female singers who can be taken seriously; Anna Murphy from CELLAR DARLING and Seraina Tell from DEAD VENUS. I see both women pretty much on a par with each other – whereas Anna Murphy is vocally more versatile, Seraina Telli has more rock in her voice. I’m going to compare her to one of the best female singers and power women: Seraina Telli reminds me of Melissa Etheridge in the rock songs. Sure, there’s a lot of genre difference between the two – vocally, I find a lot of charisma and energy in both women.
The singer and guitarist was supported by drummer Mike Malloth and bassist André Gärtner – a trio that is musically one of the best that Switzerland currently has to offer. Unfortunately, André has left the band – without a fight, simply because some life plans develop differently than planned. New on the instrument with the thick strings is Merlin Mattheeuws. He is stepping into big shoes, but seems to be able to fill them.
Enough praise – what does the album have to offer? In any case, a lot of variety!
The title track „Flowers & Pain“, for example, sets a house number as a rock track with a lot of pressure and depth – the sound not only hammers its way into the guts, but also shows right at the beginning what Ms Telli is capable of vocally. And here – Melissa sends her regards! Otherwise, the bass and drums here provide, something that is more noticeable in a trio than in larger bands – an extremely precise and powerful foundation.
„Lily Of The Valley“ offers a wide range of sound elements – on the one hand Telli’s changeable voice, be it as a playful borrowing from classical music or as a savvy rock tube, on the other hand fat rock parts and soft acoustic guitar parts.
„Plaything Doll“ then offers progressive rock at its best; compact rock passages are interwoven with epic vocal parts – the range of this woman is incredible. It should not be forgotten that she contributes most of the songs besides her voice and is therefore not only the front woman but also the creative head of the band.
So it is not surprising that „Haunted House“ is a contemplative, profound number, similar to „Revelation Of Hate“. „Little King“, on the other hand, is playful and groovy – a light-hearted rock number.
It’s also exciting that a song is dedicated to Papa Moll’s daughter – and it’s a track that has quite a bit of jazz in its blood. This is the ideal number for the smoky club in an intimate setting, close to the audience. This track is not alone on the album either – „The Release“ plays on similar ground – eight minutes of melodic „free jazz“, mixed with funk and vocal punk facets à la Nina Hagen.
Now I’ve done something I usually avoid – I’ve said something about all the songs. So I can do the same for the last track on the album – with „Keeps You Alive“ a circle closes in two minutes, a window opens into a quiet room…
Conclusion
With „Flowesr & Pain“, DEAD VENUS make good on a promise they made with their last album – to evolve, mature and please fans even more. Hats off to a woman and her band who feel at home in the rock and metal scene and yet push open doors and windows into other musical worlds – this is an album you should definitely check out – buy!
