CORELEONI sind gerade einmal vier Jahre im Geschäft – als Band. Insbesondere Gitarrenhero und GOTTHARD – Gründungsmitglied Leo Leoni, aber auch seine Mitstreiter bringen natürlich viel mehr Musik- und Bühnenerfahrung mit. CORELEONI sind für mich eine Band, welche der Schweizer Hardrockszene neue Impulse gegeben hat. Ich hatte schon beim ersten Album – einer Hommage an GOTTHARD – den Eindruck, dass Leo Leoni hier etwas lebt, was im „mainstreamversuchten“ GOTTHARD-Universum nicht mehr möglich ist oder zumindest scheint – Spontaneität, Leidenschaft und dreckiger Rock’n’Roll. Es sieht aus, als hätte sich Leoni gemeinsam mit Eugent Bushpepa | Gesang, Jgor Gianola | Gitarre, Mila Merker | Bass und Alex Motta | Schlagzeug eine Spielwiese geschaffen, auf der alles möglich und nichts verboten ist. Mit III liefert das Quintett erneut ein herzhaftes, lebendiges Hardrockalbum in Stil der Achtzigerbands, einfach technisch moderner…

Zuerst einmal; ja, auf dem Album finden sich nicht weniger als 15 Tracks (CD-Digipak und Boxset), davon sind vier GOTTHARD-Cover. Und Leo und Co. wagen sich auch an richtig harten Stoff; nichts weniger als „Jumpin‘ Jack Flash“ von den ROLLING STONES. Damit wären wir dann auch schon beim Tiefpunkt des Albums. Dieses Cover bietet nichts Besonderes, es verkommt zu einem „weiteren Cover“ des Songs, fällt damit von den anderen Covers und insbesondere den Original-Tracks deutlich ab.
Die GOTTHARD-Tracks „Say Goodbye“, Good Time Lover, „Fist In Your Face“ und „I’m On My Way“ sind okay, gut gemacht aber nicht so, dass sie einem vom Hocker reissen würden. Womit, hier meine ich die kompositorische Ebene. Was bei diesen Songs und bei allen anderen auch wirklich vom Hocker haut, ist Eugent Bushpepa. Leo Leoni hat damit einen Sänger an Land gezogen, der sich deutlich oberhalb von Nic Maeder positioniert, mindestens auf eine Höhe mit Marc Storace steht und von seiner Stimmgewalt und technischen Qualität klar Richtung Steve Lee tendiert. Klar, dessen Klasse erreicht er nicht – welcher lebende Sänger schafft das schon. Als Sänger von GOTTHARD wäre er auf jeden Fall die bessere Wahl – sorry Nic! Ist aber gut, dass er bei CORELEONI seine Qualitäten ausspielen kann, diesen erdigen Rock’n’Roll mitprägt und die Gesamtqualität hochhält.

Das nämlich war meine innere Zerrissenheit bei der Punktevergabe; eine mässige Umsetzung des STONES-Knallers und „nette“ GOTTHARD-Cover drücken das Album. Wären da nur die Originaltracks drauf – eine glatte 10!
Beispiele gefällig? Alle! Alleine der Start des Albums mit dem Gitarrenintro , dieser Phrase, die ebenso unauffällig wie bestimmend im Songgewand verwoben ist – wunderbar. Oder dann die krachenden Bretter wie „Guilty Under Pressure“, „Greetings From Russia“ oder „Wake Up Call“. Mit „Sometimes“ gibt es eine Powerballade, mit „Deep In My Soul“ eine richtig schöne. verträumte und mehrstimmige Ballade – beide sind sehr bluesig geworden – Hammersongs, welche Bushpepa’s Stimme so richtig zum Leuchten bringt, phasenweise klingt der Kerle wie Freddie Mercury. CORELEONI haben nicht nur einen erstklassigen Gitarristen, ihr Sänger ist definitiv etwas vom Besten, was sich aktuell in der Szene tummelt – und zwar nicht nur in der Schweiz!

Fazit

„III“ ist eindeutig das bisher beste CORELEONI – Album, kompakt, reif, vielfältig und Rock pur! Dieses Jahr wird definitiv keine bessere Rockscheibe aus der Schweiz mehr kommen. Egal, ob die GOTTHARDER sich noch etwas einfallen lassen oder KROKUS sich wiedervereinen und mit CHINA eine Supergroup gründen – keine Chance! Empfehlung? Was wohl – kaufen, kaufen, kaufen!

CORELEONI are just four years in business – as a band. Especially guitar hero and GOTTHARD – founding member Leo Leoni, but also his comrades-in-arms naturally bring much more music and stage experience. CORELEONI are for me a band that has given new impulses to the Swiss hard rock scene. Already with the first album – a tribute to GOTTHARD – I had the impression that Leo Leoni lives something here that is no longer possible or at least seems to be in the „mainstream“ GOTTHARD universe – spontaneity, passion and dirty rock’n’roll. It looks like Leoni, together with Eugent Bushpepa | vocals, Jgor Gianola | guitar, Mila Merker | bass and Alex Motta | drums, has created a playground where everything is possible and nothing is forbidden. With III, the quintet once again delivers a hearty, lively hard rock album in the style of the eighties bands, simply more technically modern…

First of all; yes, there are no less than 15 tracks on the album (CD digipak and boxset), four of which are GOTTHARD covers. And Leo and Co. also dare to really hard stuff; nothing less than „Jumpin‘ Jack Flash“ by the ROLLING STONES. This brings us to the low point of the album. This cover offers nothing special, it degenerates to a „further cover“ of the song, falls thus from the other covers and in particular the original tracks clearly.
The GOTTHARD tracks „Say Goodbye“, Good Time Lover, „Fist In Your Face“ and „I’m On My Way“ are okay, well done but not so that they would tear one from the stool. By which, here I mean the compositional level. What really blows your mind on these songs, and on all the others as well, is Eugent Bushpepa. Leo Leoni has landed a singer who is clearly positioned above Nic Maeder, is at least on a par with Marc Storace and clearly tends towards Steve Lee in terms of his vocal power and technical quality. Of course, he doesn’t reach his class – but which living singer can do that. As singer of GOTTHARD he would be the better choice in any case – sorry Nic! But it’s good that he can play out his qualities with CORELEONI, co-shaping this earthy Rock’n’Roll and keeping the overall quality high.
That was namely my inner turmoil in scoring; a moderate implementation of the STONES banger and „nice“ GOTTHARD cover press the album. Would there only be the original tracks on it – a smooth 10!
Examples fancy? All of them! Alone the start of the album with the guitar intro , this phrase that is woven as inconspicuous as determinant in the song garb – wonderful. Or then the crashing boards like „Guilty Under Pressure“, „Greetings From Russia“ or „Wake Up Call“. With „Sometimes“ there is a power ballad, with „Deep In My Soul“ a really beautiful. dreamy and polyphonic ballad – both have become very bluesy – hammer songs, which Bushpepa’s voice really shines, phasenweise sounds the guy like Freddie Mercury. CORELEONI not only have a first-class guitarist, their singer is definitely something of the best that is currently in the scene – and not only in Switzerland!

Conclusion

„III“ is clearly the best CORELEONI – album so far, compact, mature, diverse and pure rock! This year definitely no better rock disc will come from Switzerland. No matter if GOTTHARDER come up with something else or KROKUS reunite and form a supergroup with CHINA – no chance! Recommendation? What probably – buy, buy, buy!
