STEPFATHER FRED – „LIKE THE SEA – Constantly Moving, Constantly Drowning“
Das Album ist bereits erschienen, und obwohl ich die Band bereits kenne und das Material seit einiger Zeit habe – kommt diese Review zu spät. Oder gerade richtig?

Was ist eigentlich der beste Zeitpunkt, um über neue Alben zu berichten? Kommt etwas drauf an. Wenn wir in die Promounterlagen der Band integriert werden wollen – so früh wie möglich. Bedingt dann aber auch, dass wir das Material entsprechend früh erhalten. Einige Tage oder wenige Wochen vor dem Veröffentlichungstermin? Ist für uns spannend, weil sich unsere LeserInnen interessieren und wir Vorfreude steigern können. Zum VÖ? Das mögen einige Label, weil es dann gleich zum Verkaufsstart Werbung gibt? Nach dem Verkaufsstart? Manchmal kriegen wir das Material erst dann oder wir verpennen den Termin – in den meisten Fällen sind wir selber schuld. Eigentlich finde ich es aber nicht sooo schlecht, schliesslich ist Promo dann, wenn das Zeugs am Markt ist, auch nicht ohne, oder?
Nun ja, habs also vergeigt, obwohl ich die Band schon kenne und das vorliegende Album bereits mehrmals angehört habe. Die Schwiegerväter sind bekannt dafür, dass sie unkonventionelle Wege gehen. Einerseits sind sie eine geile Liveband, haben bisher schon über 500 Shows abgeliefert. Dann sträuben sie sich erfolgreich gegen eine Einordnung in ein bestimmtes Genre. Und drittens ziehen sie ihre Ideen durch. „LIKE THE SEA – Constantly Moving, Constantly Drowning“ wurde zum Beispiel vollständig live eingespielt. Also nicht vor Publikum, aber eben nicht spurweise. Das waren dann quasi Liveauftritte im Studio. Sebastian Schuster – Vocals, Simon Bihlmayr – Guitars, Matthias Gaßner – Bass und Julius Dollinger – Drums – dieses Quartett hat wieder richtig einen rausgehauen!
Was haben wir also vorliegen? Erst einmal 13 Tracks, was schon viel Stoff fürs Geld ist. Dann ein Album, das ebenso rund und kompakt ist wie abwechslungsreich. Es ist schon eine Hausnummer, wenn man verschiedene Stilelemente verarbeitet und dabei kongruent bleibt und trotzdem Grenzen auslotet.
Beispiele gefällig? „Circles“ ist eine heftige Nummer, welche Screaming und melodiösen Klargesang verbindet, nach einem rockigen Einstieg in Rhythmen und Fundament eher Richtung Metalcore driftet, das Ganze jedoch mit Elementen kombiniert, wie wir sie im Hardcore kennen. Also bloss keine Schwachheiten bei den Zuhörern dulden – ist es zu hart, bist du zu schwach!
Mich hat bereits der Opener „Deep In My Mind“ gepackt – das ist so ein Teil, das zwischen hartem Rock und Heavy Metal mäandert (was für ein geiles Wort habe ich hier wieder platziert – grosses Kino!). Eine powervolle Nummer, die Vollgas gibt, sich zwischendurch immer wieder Pausen gönnt, wie um Energie zu tanken, damit es nachher umso heftiger weitergehen kann.
Mit „I Am The Sea“ liefern die Jungs eine Powerballade, einen absoluten Hookliner, der gleichzeitig tief im progressiven Becken fischt. Für mich ist das der Track, welcher mich gemeinsam mit „Unconditional Love“ amstärksten angesprochen hat.
Fazit
Viele Alben haben Stärken und Schwächen – wo Licht ist, muss auch Schatten sein, oder? Das trifft bei „LIKE THE SEA – Constantly Moving, Constantly Drowning“ nicht zu. STEPFATHER FRED ist es gelungen, ein facettenreiches Album abzuliefern, das keine signifikanten Schwächen enthält. Einfach gute, energetische Musik, für die es nur eine Empfehlung geben kann – kaufen!

What is actually the best time to report on new albums? It depends a bit. If we want to be integrated into the band’s promotional material – as early as possible. But then it also requires that we receive the material correspondingly early. A few days or a few weeks before the release date? It’s exciting for us because our readers are interested and we can build up anticipation. At the release date? Some labels like that because then there is advertising right at the sales launch? After the sales launch? Sometimes we don’t get the material until then or we miss the deadline – in most cases it’s our own fault. But actually I don’t think it’s so bad, after all, when the stuff is on the market, it’s not without promotion, is it?
Well, I blew it, although I already know the band and have listened to this album several times. The fathers-in-law are known for going unconventional ways. On the one hand, they are a great live band and have played more than 500 shows so far. Then they successfully resist being categorised in a certain genre. And thirdly, they follow through with their ideas. „LIKE THE SEA – Constantly Moving, Constantly Drowning“, for example, was recorded completely live. So not in front of an audience, but not track by track. These were quasi live performances in the studio. Sebastian Schuster – vocals, Simon Bihlmayr – guitars, Matthias Gaßner – bass and Julius Dollinger – drums – this quartet really hit the spot again!
So what do we have here? First of all, 13 tracks, which is already a lot of material for the money. Then an album that is as round and compact as it is varied. It’s quite a feat to process different stylistic elements while remaining congruent and still exploring boundaries.
Examples? „Circles“ is a heavy number that combines screaming and melodic clear vocals, drifts towards metalcore after a rocky start in rhythms and foundation, but combines the whole thing with elements we know from hardcore. So don’t tolerate any weaknesses in the listeners – if it’s too hard, you’re too weak!
I was already gripped by the opener „Deep In My Mind“ – this is one of those songs that meanders between hard rock and heavy metal (what a cool word I have placed here again – great cinema!). A powerful number that goes full throttle, allowing itself breaks in between, as if to refuel energy, so that it can go on all the heavier afterwards.
With „I Am The Sea“ the guys deliver a power ballad, an absolute hookliner, which at the same time fishes deep in the progressive pool. For me, this is the track that appealed to me the most, together with „Unconditional Love“.
Conclusion
Many albums have strengths and weaknesses – where there is light, there must also be shadow, right? This is not the case with „LIKE THE SEA – Constantly Moving, Constantly Drowning“. STEPFATHER FRED have succeeded in delivering a multi-faceted album that contains no significant weaknesses. Simply good, energetic music for which there can only be one recommendation – buy it!
