METALLICA – „The Blacklist“

Zuerst die Frage; warum sollte man ein Album kaufen, auf welchem ein und derselbe Titel jeweils 4 oder 5 oder 6 oder gar 12 Mal drauf ist? Und zweitens; wie schreibt man eine Review über ein Album, das insgesamt 53 Titel enthält?

Erstens; weil es „Blacklist“ von METALLICA in einer exklusiven Vinyl-Version gibt. Wenn du die nicht besitzt, ist deine Plattensammlung so gut wie nichts wert.
Zweitens; indem man sich zuerst der Liste der Musiker annähert und sich dann deren Interpretationen der einzelnen Songs hingibt. Und, indem man sich einige Zeit später extrem zusammenreisst und versucht, sich auf wichtige oder besonders auffällige oder besonders gute Versionen zu konzentrieren.

„Metallica Blacklist“ ist übrigens eine Hommage an das „Black Album“, welches dieses Jahr 30 wird. 😉🤘
Nun also zur Liste der verschiedensten Musiker und Band, welche sich hier mit einem Ausschnitt aus dem umfangreichen METALLICA-Katalog befasst haben:
Zuerst einmal zu einigen, welche hier nicht soooo sehr überraschen; GHOST etwa oder WEEZER oder ROYAL BLOOD oder BIFFY CLYRO. Nicht zu vergessen auch COREY TAYLOR (STONE SOUR, SLIPKNOT), VOLBEAT oder auch PORTUGAL.THE MAN.

Dann mal einige Namen, welche man hier nicht unbedingt erwartete: Per Gessle von ROXETTE etwa oder MILEY CYRUS, ELTON JOHN, die World-Musikerin LA PERLA, das Pop Duo SHOR POLICE oder der ghanaisch-amerikanische Singer/Songwriter MOSES SUMNEY.
Kurz und gut, auf diesen 7 Vinyl-Alben ist ein kaum fassbarer Stilmix von Musikern aus der ganzen Welt zu finden.

Was das bedeuten mag? Vielleicht, dass die Musik von METALLICA dermassen bedeutend ist, den Thrash-Metal-Rahmen zu sprengen und für die verschiedensten Musikgenres so viel Substanz zu bieten, dass sich jede Musikerin, jeder Musiker etwas Neues daraus basteln kann? Das scheint so zu sein, ist so.
Es ist bestimmt auch dem Umstand geschuldet, dass METALLICA’s Thrash eindeutig zur melodischeren Art gehört. Oder anders gesagt, im Katalog der bisherigen 10 Alben genügend Material enthält, welches auch von Nicht-Metallern interpretiert werden kann.

So gesehen überrascht es denn auch nicht, dass die Tracklist des Samplers vor allem bekannte Tracks enthält – die auch bis anhin schon von zahlreichen Musikern und Bands gecovert wurden. Beispiel gefällig? „Nothing Else Matters“ ist mit nicht weniger als 12 Interpretationen vertreten, „The Unforgiven“ mit 7, „Enter Sandman“ und „Sad But True“ mit je 6 Versionen.

Oh Mann, wie soll das auch überraschen? Natürlich stammen alle Tracks auf „Blacklist“ vom „Black Album“ und das bietet nun einmal die meisten METALLICA-Hits.

Gibt es da überhaupt herausragende Interpretationen? Ich finde schon. MOSES SUMNEY’s Version von „The Unforgiven“ ist absolut cool, ähnlich auch JOSE MADEROs Interpretation desselben Tracks. Beide Versionen tragen die Handschrift des Originals, dessen Power und Intensität und sind trotzdem stimmfokussierte Balladen.
Auch was SAM FENDER, seines Zeichens britischer Singer/Songwriter, mit seiner Liveversion von „Sad But True“ anstellt, fasziniert. Es ist eine jener Versionen, welche sich recht deutlich vom Original abhebt.
Was ich auch spannend finde, ist DAVE GAHANs Interpretation von „Nothing Else Matters“. Warum? Naja, Gahan ist Frontmann der britischen Elektro-Popper DEPECHE MODE.

Was hat es nun aber mit der schrägsten Besetzung auf sich? MILEY CYRUS (Vocals), WATT (Guitars), ELTON JOHN (Piano), YO-YO MA (Cello), ROBERT TRUJILLO (Bass – what else…) und CHAD SMITH (Drums). Einerseits die Zusammensetzung dieser Supergroup – lauter exzellente Musiker, die sich weiss Gott nicht mehr beweisen müssen. besonders aber hat mich beeindruckt, was Hannah Montana hier zu bieten hat. Verdammt, warum singt MILEY CYRUS eigentlich Pop? Klar, da verdient man mehr. Aber was die Sängerin hier zu bieten hat, ist absolute Weltspitze. Ich habe ihre Stimme bisher nicht annähernd so gut, so beeindruckend erlebt. Meine Güte, da müsste sich manche Metalsängerin warm anziehen, wenn das Girl neben ihr auf der Bühne steht und loslässt. Der tRack ist definitiv einer meiner Liebsten auf dieser Scheibe.
By The Way; wer sich die „Howard Stern Show“ zu dieser Zusammenarbeit zwischen METALLICA, MILEY CYRUS und ELTON JOHN anschaut, wird bemerken, wie JAMES HETFIELD sehr gerührt ist, als ELTON JOHN feststellt, dass „Nothing Else Matters“ einer der besten Songs der Welt ist und METALLICA eine der grössten Bands. Wo der ROCKET MAN Recht hat, hat er Recht.

Gibt es weitere speziellen Versionen? Auf jeden Fall. Es ist schon so, dass sich viele Interpretinnen und Interpreten nicht allzusehr aus dem Fenster gelehnt haben. Allein schon die Übertragung in den typischen Stil einer Band, kann aber einen Track völlig verändern – zum Beispiel „Through The Never“ von THE HU. Mongolei grüsst Bay Area!

Ich möchte hier jetzt keine Playlist zu den verschiedenen Versionen auftun – sucht euch die gefälligst selber auf Youtube zusammen! Was ich aber nicht lassen kann; JASON ISBELL & THE 400 UNIT mit „Sad But True“ – ‚tallica funktionieren auch in Country!

Fazit

Fassen wir also kurz zusammen; wer das Album nicht kaufen will – oder zumindest downloaden oder streamen – ist definitiv selber schuld – das Ding wird in Kürze Kult sein, wird als das beste METALLICA-Tribute-Album in die Geschichte eingehen.
Zudem; es wird diverseste Bands auf der Welt geben, die sich in den Arsch beissen, weil sie nicht Teil dieses Projektes sein können.
Last but least – das einzige, was ich an diesem Album bedaure – es gibt weder einen Track von ARCH ENEMY noch einen von AMON AMARTH – da haben es Lars Ulrich und James Hetfield wirklich verpasst, das grösste Lineup ever zusammenzustellen.
Sei’s drum, hier kann es nur eine Empfehlung geben – mehrfach in Vinyl kaufen und einige Menschen zu Weihnachten glücklich machen!

First of all, why would you buy an album that has the same track on it 4 or 5 or 6 or even 12 times? And secondly, how do you write a review about an album that contains a total of 53 tracks?

First; because „Blacklist“ by METALLICA is available in an exclusive vinyl version. If you don’t own that, your record collection is worth next to nothing.
Second; by first approaching the list of musicians and then indulging in their interpretations of each song. And, by extremely pulling yourself together some time later and trying to focus on important or particularly striking or particularly good versions.
Well, good luck then…

„Metallica Blacklist“ is by the way a homage to the „Black Album“, which turns 30 this year. 😉 🤘
Now to the list of the most different musicians and bands, which have dealt here with an excerpt from the extensive METALLICA catalogue:
First of all to some, which do not surprise here soooo much; GHOST for example or WEEZER or ROYAL BLOOD or BIFFY CLYRO. Not to forget COREY TAYLOR (STONE SOUR, SLIPKNOT), VOLBEAT or PORTUGAL.THE MAN.

Then there are some names you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find here: Per Gessle of ROXETTE, for example, or MILEY CYRUS, ELTON JOHN, the world musician LA PERLA, the pop duo SHOR POLICE or the Ghanaian-American singer/songwriter MOSES SUMNEY.
In short, these 7 vinyl albums feature an almost incomprehensible mix of styles by musicians from all over the world.

What might this mean? Perhaps that METALLICA’s music is so significant, going beyond the thrash metal framework and offering so much substance to a wide variety of musical genres, that any musician can craft something new out of it? That seems to be so, is so.
It is certainly also due to the fact that METALLICA’s thrash clearly belongs to the more melodic kind. Or, to put it another way, there is enough material in the catalogue of the 10 albums to date that can be interpreted by non-metalheads.

So it is not surprising that the sampler’s track list contains mainly well-known tracks – which have already been covered by numerous musicians and bands. Would you like an example? „Nothing Else Matters“ is represented with no less than 12 interpretations, „The Unforgiven“ with 7, „Enter Sandman“ and „Sad But True“ with 6 versions each.

Oh man, how could that be surprising? Of course, all the tracks on „Blacklist“ are from the „Black Album“ and that’s the one that offers the most METALLICA hits.

Are there any outstanding interpretations at all? I think there are. MOSES SUMNEY’s version of „The Unforgiven“ is absolutely cool, similarly JOSE MADERO’s interpretation of the same track. Both versions bear the hallmarks of the original, its power and intensity, yet are vocal-focused ballads.
Also what SAM FENDER, British singer/songwriter that he is, does with his live version of „Sad But True“ is fascinating. It’s one of those versions that stands out quite clearly from the original.
What I also find exciting is DAVE GAHAN’s interpretation of „Nothing Else Matters“. Why? Well, Gahan is the frontman of the British electro-poppers DEPECHE MODE.

So what’s the deal with the weirdest line-up? MILEY CYRUS (vocals), WATT (guitars), ELTON JOHN (piano), YO-YO MA (cello), ROBERT TRUJILLO (bass – what else…) and CHAD SMITH (drums). On the one hand, the composition of this supergroup – all excellent musicians who, God knows, don’t have to prove themselves anymore. But I was particularly impressed by what Hannah Montana has to offer here. Damn, why does MILEY CYRUS actually sing pop? Sure, you deserve more. But what the singer has to offer here is absolutely world class. I haven’t heard her voice anywhere near this good, this impressive. My goodness, many a metal singer would have to dress warmly when this girl stands next to her on stage and lets loose. The tRack is definitely one of my favourites on this disc.
By The Way; if you watch the „Howard Stern Show“ about this collaboration between METALLICA, MILEY CYRUS and ELTON JOHN, you will notice how JAMES HETFIELD is very touched when ELTON JOHN states that „Nothing Else Matters“ is one of the best songs in the world and METALLICA is one of the greatest bands. Where the ROCKET MAN is right, he is right.

Are there other special versions? Definitely. It’s true that many performers haven’t gone too far out on a limb. But just the transfer into the typical style of a band can completely change a track – for example „Through The Never“ by THE HU. Mongolia greets Bay Area! (video further up!)

I don’t want to put together a playlist of the different versions here – please look for them yourself on Youtube! But I can’t leave out CHRIS STAPLETON with „Nothing Else Matters“ – ‚tallica also work in country!

Conclusion

So let’s summarise briefly; whoever doesn’t want to buy the album – or at least download or stream it – is definitely to blame – this thing will soon be a cult, will go down in history as the best METALLICA tribute album.
Moreover; there will be various bands in the world biting themselves in the ass because they can’t be part of this project.
Last but not least – the only thing I regret about this album – there is neither one track from ARCH ENEMY nor one from AMON AMARTH – Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield really missed out on putting together the greatest line-up ever.
Be that as it may, there can only be one recommendation here – buy several times in vinyl and make some people happy for Christmas!
