Wer zum Teufel sind LOFFT, warum können sie ihren Bandnamen nicht richtig schreiben und wieso tragen sie Overalls? Fragen über Fragen, die ich euch nur zum Teil beantworten kann. Auf jeden Fall sind LOFFT eine Truppe von Liebhabern der härteren Gangart und stammen aus dem malerischen Hamburg. Malerisch? Naja… Hamburg eben.
Torger Neuhaus – Vocals, Heiko Höhn – Guitar, Eric Römer – ebenfalls Guitar, Carsten Walter – Bass und Timo Höcke – Drums. Die Band geistert anscheinend schon beinahe 20 Jahre (Gründung 2002) durch die Veranstaltungshallen der norddeutschen Metropole und haben sich dort scheints eine respaktable Fanbase aufgebaut. Das hat aber auch nichts geholfen – ich kannte die Männer bis anhin trotzdem nicht. Ich kenne sie auch jetzt noch nicht, hingegen ihre Musik schon. Genauer gesagt ihr kommendes Album „Start A Fire“. Immerhin schreiben sie den Albumtitel korrekt. Ob ihr Sound was taugt? Lest weiter!

13 Tracks bevölkern das Album und hören auf so illustre Namen wie „When The Curtain Falls“, „By Your Side“, „I Decide“ oder „Rock The North 2020“. Titel sagen bekanntlich nichts über die musikalische Qualität aus, „We Rock The North 2020“ ist immerhin Programm.
„Rock’n’Roll braucht kein Gefrickel“ – sagt der Promotext – dem ich für einmal in keinster Art und Weise widerspreche. Der Sound der Jungs ist seriös, deutlich vorwärtsgerichtet und mäandert zwischen mittelhart, hart und sehr hart. Man braucht das Volume nicht einmal besonders hoch zu schrauben – selbst mit meinen Laptop-Lautsprechern klingt das Machwerk knackig und kompakt. Produktion und technische Umsetzung sind ebenso modern wie der Sound – auch wenn seine Anleihen einige Dekaden zurückreichen.
Würde ich versuchen , musikalische Vorbilder der Band zu identifizieren, so kämen mir da keine oder viel zu viele in den Sinn. „Start A Fire“ ist ein Album, das mit Druck und Melodie überzeugt, einer charismatischen Reibeisen-Stimme und sehr guter Gitarrenarbeit.
„LOFFT ist nichts für Musiktheoretiker, die ihre Erfüllung in der Interpretation verwirrt aneinandergereihter Töne finden. LOFFT ist für Leute, die ein Rock-Konzert spüren und erleben wollen.“ Wieder Promotext und wieder richtig – die Band macht total Lust auf Live – wobei ich nicht damit rechne, dass sie so bald in unsere südlichen Gefilde donnern werden.
Gibt es Anspieltipps? Ja und nein. Gute Alben brauchen aus meiner Sicht nicht einzelne Tracks, die sich abheben, sondern eher ein Paket an Songs, die alle auf demselben, hohen Niveau angesiedelt sind – und das trifft für „Start A Fire“ zu. Trotzdem haben mich einzelne Titel etwas mehr angesprochen – „When The Curtain Falls“ beispielsweise – relativ harte Instrumentalparts gemischt mit sehr melodischem Gesang – ganz schön hübsch!
„Ten Feet Tall“ braucht sich auch nicht zu verstecken, Rhythmuswechsel und beeindruckender Gesang fahren direkt in die Magengrube, knapp unter dem Rippenbogen.
Dann gibt es da noch den Hookliner „Matter Of Trust“ – ein Stück Musik gemacht, um live gespielt und von den Fans mitgesungen zu werden. Mich erinnert der Track etwas an „Down By The River“ von den NEW ROSES.
Wie gesagt, zu verstecken braucht sich kein einzelner Track, die Scheibe ist ein rundes Werk, mehr als gelungen.

Fazit

„It’s Just A Matter Of Fluke“, dass ich die Jungs bisher nicht kannte – schliesslich liegt der Bodensee auch weit weg von der Nordsee. Oder liegt Hamburg an der Ostsee? Was soll’s – die Musik von LOFFT ist auch für den Süden geeignet. Das Album dürft, nein eigentlich müsst ihr es kaufen – es lohnt sich. Auch wenn die Jungs ihren Bandnamen falsch schreiben…

Who the hell are LOFFT, why can’t they spell their band name right and why do they wear overalls? Questions upon questions, which I can only answer in part. In any case, LOFFT are a troupe of lovers of the heavier style and come from picturesque Hamburg. Picturesque? Well… Hamburg.
Torger Neuhaus – vocals, Heiko Höhn – guitar, Eric Römer – also guitar, Carsten Walter – bass and Timo Höcke – drums. The band seems to have been haunting the event halls of the northern German metropolis for almost 20 years (founded in 2002) and seem to have built up a respectable fan base there. But that didn’t help either – I still didn’t know the men until now. I still don’t know them, but I do know their music. More precisely, their upcoming album „Start A Fire“. At least they spell the album title correctly. Is their sound any good? Read on!

„Rock’n’roll doesn’t need any frills“ – says the promo text – which for once I don’t disagree with in any way. The sound of the guys is serious, clearly forward and meanders between medium hard, hard and very hard. You don’t even need to turn up the volume particularly high – even with my laptop speakers, the work sounds crisp and compact. Production and technical realisation are just as modern as the sound – even if its borrowings go back a few decades.
If I were to try to identify the band’s musical idols, none or far too many would come to mind. „Start A Fire“ is an album that convinces with pressure and melody, a charismatic grater voice and very good guitar work.
„LOFFT is not for music theorists who find their fulfilment in the interpretation of confusedly strung together tones. LOFFT is for people who want to feel and experience a rock concert.“ Promotext again and right again – the band totally makes you want to see them live – though I don’t expect them to thunder into our southern climes anytime soon.
Are there any song tips? Yes and no. In my opinion, good albums don’t need individual tracks that stand out, but rather a package of songs that are all on the same, high level – and that applies to „Start A Fire“. Nevertheless, individual tracks appealed to me a bit more – „When The Curtain Falls“ for example – relatively hard instrumental parts mixed with very melodic vocals – quite pretty!
„Ten Feet Tall“ doesn’t need to hide either, rhythm changes and impressive vocals drive straight into the pit of your stomach, just below the ribcage.
Then there’s the hookliner „Matter Of Trust“ – a piece of music made to be played live and sung along by the fans. The track reminds me a bit of „Down By The River“ by the NEW ROSES.
As I said, no single track needs to hide, the disc is a well-rounded work, more than successful.

Conclusion

„It’s Just A Matter Of Fluke“ that I didn’t know the guys before – after all, Lake Constance is also far away from the North Sea. Or is Hamburg on the Baltic Sea? Whatever – LOFFT’s music is also suitable for the south. You may, no actually you must buy the album – it’s worth it. Even if the guys spell their band name wrong…
