ATREYU melden sich zurück – „Baptize“

Die kalifornischen Metalcore-Urgesteine veröffentlichen am 4. Juni 2021 ihr insgesamt neuntes Studioalbum „Baptize“.

Brandon Saller am Mikrofon, Dan Jacobs und Travis Miguel an den Gitarren, Portner McKnight an Bass + Vocals sowie Kyle Rosa an den Drums, das sind ATREYU 2021. Die Band ist seit 1998 unterwegs, zwischen 2011 und 2014 haben die Jungs ausgiebig Pause gemacht. Aufgrund dieser Pause feiert die Band also quasi 20-jähriges Bandjubiläum. Was sie dem Publikum mit ihrem Geburtstagsgeschenk vorlegen, ist mehr als nice. ATREYU sind definitiv zurück!
Zudem werden sie auf dem neuen Album von einigen hochkarätigen Gästen unterstützt. So ist Travis Barker als ehemaliger Drummer von BLINK 182 ebenso mit an Bord wie Jacoby Shaddix , Fronter von PAPA ROACH und Matt Heafy, Sänger von TRIVIUM. Ob diese Mitarbeit zu einem starken Album führt? We’ll see!

Die 9 von 10 Rock-Headphones lassen es bereits vermuten – ich bin begeistert. Dazu, dass ich Metalcore mag, habe ich mich zur Genüge bekannt, im gleichen Atemzug wie dazu, dass er gut sein muss. Was guten Metalcore auszeichnet? In allererster Linie guter Scream- und Cleangesang, in zweiter Linie viel Drive und präzise Rhythmen und nicht zu vergessen – so massiver Druck wie möglich.
ATREYU als Core-Urgesteine bringen diese Ingredienzen seit Jahren mit und machen auch auf „Baptize“ keine Ausnahme.
Natürlich sind die Tracks mit Gastbeteiligung besonders spannend; „Untouchable“ ist aber nicht nur deshalb mein Lieblingssong auf der Scheibe. Die Nummer ist sehr eingängig und zum Mitsingen geeignet. Dass die zusätzliche Stimme von Jacoby das Salz in der eh schon gelungenen Suppe ist – klar!
Bei „Oblivion“ bin ich mir nicht sicher, wieviel Einfluss Matt Heafy hatte – mir erscheint der Song aber rockiger, ein Stück stärker hin zum TRIVIUM-Metal – besonders, was das Gitarren-Riffing anbelangt. Und selbstverständlich bringt Heafy seine charakteristische Stimmfarbe ein.
Der dritte Track mit Gastbeteiligung ist „Warrior“. Die Drumeinlagen sind sehr kreativ, was die hohe technische und musikalische Qualität von Travis Barker zeigt – er ist und bleibt ein Spitzendrummer. Was nicht bedeutet, dass Kyle Rosa hier dringend Nachhilfe gebraucht hätte.
Wenn ich das Album als Ganzes anschaue, so besticht es durch seine vollständig hoch technische Qualität, das gewohnt gute Songwriting und die kreative musikalische Umsetzung. Es gibt auf dem Album keinen Track, der abfällt oder deutlich hervorsticht. Neben den besprochenen Gastbeiträgen kann ich zum Reinhören den Titeltrack „Baptize“ ebenso empfehlen wie „Catastrophe“ – zwei absolute Brecher.

Fazit

Anspieltipps machen bei diesem Album keinen Sinn. Der Metalcore-Fan wird sich das Album eh vollständig reinziehen wollen und jene, welche als Einstieg in das Genre ein sehr gutes Beispiel benötigen, sind gut beraten, das ebenfalls so zu tun. „Baptize“ ist ein Meilenstein des moderne Metalcore und wird bestimmt eines der stärksten Alben sein, welche diese Jahr herauskommen werden.

The band has been on the road since 1998, between 2011 and 2014 the guys took an extensive break. Because of this break, the band is celebrating its 20th anniversary. What they present to the audience with their birthday present is more than nice. ATREYU are definitely back!
In addition, they are supported by some top-class guests on the new album. Travis Barker, former drummer of BLINK 182, is on board as well as Jacoby Shaddix , frontman of PAPA ROACH and Matt Heafy, singer of TRIVIUM. Will this collaboration result in a strong album? We’ll see!

The 9 out of 10 rock headphones already suggest it – I’m excited. I have professed that I like metalcore enough, in the same breath as I have professed that it must be good. What distinguishes good metalcore? First and foremost good scream and clean vocals, secondly a lot of drive and precise rhythms and last but not least – as massive pressure as possible.
ATREYU as core veterans have been bringing these ingredients for years and make no exception on „Baptize“.
Of course the tracks with guest participation are especially exciting; but „Untouchable“ is not only my favourite song on the disc. The number is very catchy and suitable for singing along. That the additional voice of Jacoby is the salt in the already successful soup – of course!
With „Oblivion“ I’m not sure how much influence Matt Heafy had – but to me the song seems rockier, a bit more towards TRIVIUM-Metal – especially concerning the guitar riffing. And of course Heafy adds his characteristic vocal colour.
The third track with guest participation is „Warrior“. The drum interludes are very creative, showing the high technical and musical quality of Travis Barker – he remains a top drummer. Which does not mean that Kyle Rosa urgently needed tutoring here.
When I look at the album as a whole, it impresses with its completely high technical quality, the usual good songwriting and the creative musical realisation. There is no track on the album that falls off or stands out significantly. In addition to the guest contributions discussed, I can recommend the title track „Baptize“ as well as „Catastrophe“ for a listen – two absolute breakers.

Conclusion

Song tips make no sense with this album. The metalcore fan will want to get the album in its entirety anyway, and those who need a very good example as an introduction to the genre would be well advised to do so as well. „Baptize“ is a milestone of modern metalcore and will surely be one of the strongest albums to come out this year.
