Was bei Musik und Musikern heute Mangelware ist, nennt man gemeinhin Authentizität. Das bedeutet, dass Einer singt und spielt, wofür er steht, wofür er sich interessiert, was ihn beschäftigt. Und gleichzeitig ist das beständig, kümmert sich nicht um schnelllebige Trends oder Modeerscheinungen.
So einer ist Jake Smith; Sänger, Songschreiber, Gitarrist und Geschichtenerzähler. Jake sieht aus, wie er klingt, oder er klingt so, wie er aussieht – ein typischer Singer-Songwriter, besser bekannt als THE WHITE BUFFALO.
Spannend ist, wer das neue Album des Kaliforniers produziert hat. Shooter Jennings, Sohn der Country Legende Waylon Jennings, der auch Klavier und Keyboards auf der Scheibe spielt. Jennings ist bekannt dafür, dass er keine Grenzen kennt. Dafür dürfte Beweis genug sein, dass er auch für Marylin Manson produziert hat.
„On The Widow’s Walk“ ist das sechste Studioalbum, es ist das gemeinschaftlichste und organischste. Die Aufnahmen dauerten gerade einmal eine Woche und mit Snakefarm Records hat ein junges Label innerhalb der Universal Music Group den Künstler unter Vertrag genommen. Snakefarm bezeichnet sich als Label, welches Roots-Musik fördern will, da ist THE WHITE BUFFALO bestimmt am richtigen Ort..
Was gibt es denn über ein Singer-Songwriter-Album zu sagen, dass sich musikalisch an amerikanischem Folk orientiert und Country-Elemente integriert? Zum Beispiel, dass er durchaus auch Rock kann; das zeigt „Faster Than Fire“ eindrücklich. Auf der anderen Seite kann er aber auch TOM WAITS, einen meiner zehn Lieblingsmusiker. Hört euch einfach „Sycamore“ an. „Ich sehe nichts Falsches darin, ein Träumer zu sein…“ Oder „Cursive“, dessen Harmonien mich leise am „Tom Tauberts Blues“ erinnern, den meisten als „Waltzing Matilda“ bekannt. Klar, es kann nicht dieselbe Kampfklasse sein, aber es trägt dessen melancholischen Geist in sich.
Überhaupt, ich liebe die Melancholie auf diesem Album, vorgetragen von einem charismatischen Mann mit einer selten eindringlichen Stimme. Ein Bariton mit leichtem Vibrato, das die Spuren eines ereignisreichen Lebens ebenso in sich trägt wie die Tiefe einer empfindsamen Seele – anders sind solche Songs wie „River Of Lost And Love“ nicht zu leisten. Hier schliesst sich auch der Kreis wwieder zu jener Version von „The House Of The Rising Sun“ aus „Sons Of Anarchy“.
Man mag mir nun vorwerfen, dass ich selber sentimental bin und mich die Songs deshalb anrühren. Scheiss drauf – manchmal muss der Mensch sich zwischen AMON AMARTH und ARCH ENEMY, zwischen IN FLAMES und RAMMSTEIN auch etwas ausruhen, etwas besinnen.
Fazit
„Für mich ist das das ultimative Ziel“, bestätigt er, „etwas Originelles zu sein. Mir gefällt die Tatsache, dass ich draußen sein kann, ein kleiner Tom Wait-sier. Ich schätze, ich habe eine Inselmentalität, ich tue einfach, was ich tue, und es kommt alles aus einer Hand.“
Das ist es, was ich am Anfang meinte – Authentizität. Holt euch die Scheibe, lasst euch durch den Alltag wiegen und träumt gemeinsam mit diesem Ausnahmemusiker den Traum von Ruhe, Gelassenheit und Musse. Stellt euch einfach vor, wie ihr am Ufer eines Wassers sitzt und euch treiben lasst – gibt es etwas Besseres in Zeiten der aktuellen Virus-Krise? Stay home and enjoy!

The recordings lasted just one week and with Snakefarm Records a young label within the Universal Music Group signed the artist. Snakefarm calls itself a label that wants to promote roots music, so THE WHITE BUFFALO is definitely in the right place…
What is there to say about a singer-songwriter album that is musically oriented on American folk and integrates country elements? For example, that he can also rock; „Faster Than Fire“ shows that impressively. On the other hand, he also knows TOM WAITS, one of my ten favourite musicians. Just listen to „Sycamore“. „I see nothing wrong with being a dreamer…“ Or „Cursive“, whose harmonies remind me softly of „Tom Tauberts Blues“, known to most as „Waltzing Matilda“. Sure, it can’t be the same fighting class, but it carries its melancholic spirit. Anyway, I love the melancholy on this album, performed by a charismatic man with a rarely haunting voice. A baritone with a light vibrato that carries the traces of an eventful life as well as the depth of a sensitive soul – there is no other way to perform such songs like „River Of Lost And Love“. Here the circle closes again to the version of „The House Of The Rising Sun“ from „Sons Of Anarchy“.
One may reproach me now that I am sentimental myself and that’s why the songs touch me. Fuck it – sometimes you have to rest between AMON AMARTH and ARCH ENEMY, between IN FLAMES and RAMMSTEIN, you have to reflect a bit.
Conclusion
„For me, the ultimate goal,“ he confirms, „is to be something original. I like the fact that I can be outside, a little Tom Wait-sier. I guess I have an island mentality, I just do what I do and it all comes from one source.“
That’s what I meant in the beginning – authenticity. Get the disc, let yourself be swayed by everyday life and dream together with this exceptional musician the dream of peace, serenity and leisure.
