12 werden 40 – BON JOVI „Livin‘ On A Prayer“
1986 war ein ikonisches Jahr für Musik. Der Grundstein für viele Karrieren wurde gelegt. Dies ist eine sehr subjektive Liste von 12 grandiosen Songs, welche dieses Jahr 40 werden. Jeden Monat einer.

„Once upon a time, not so long ago“… Kaum etwas führt einem so sehr in Erinnerung, dass man älter geworden ist, als wenn seine Lieblingssongs aus der Jugend 40 oder 50 werden. Und davon gibt es 1986 ganz viele, welche auf irgend eine Art in die Musik-Geschichte eingegangen sind, eine Initialzündung für die Karriere von Bands und Künstlern waren oder – ja, damals war MTV auf dem Höhepunkt – mit ihren Musikvideos bleibenden Eindruck hinterliessen und Massstäbe setzten.
Mit „Livin‘ On A Prayer“ gelang dem Fünfer aus New Jersey wohl der Überhit ihrer Karriere, der auch 40 Jahre später noch kein bisschen Patina angesetzt hat. Nach ihrem Debut „Bon Jovi“ 1984 und dem unterschätzten „7800° Fahrenheit“ (der Temperatur, bei der „Metal“ zu schmelzen beginnt) 1985 holt sich die Truppe Hilfe von Songschreiber und Hit Produzent Desmond Child, um ihre Karriere so richtig ins Rollen zu bringen.
Im Keller von Sambora’s Elternhaus arbeiteten Child, Sambora und Bon Jovi einige Lieder aus, von denen eines „Livin‘ On A Prayer“ werden sollte. Dabei sah es für den Song zu Beginn nicht gut aus, da das initiale Arrangement dem Herrn Bon Jovi nicht gut genug war (das „Original“ kann man u.a. auf der Scheibe „100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong“ als Hidden Track hören, auf der es ebenfalls „Edge Of A Broken Heart“ gibt, welcher auch aus diesen Sessions stammt, aber nicht für „Slippery When Wet“ verwendet wurde – es dafür auf die B-Seite der „Livin‘ On A Prayer“ Maxi sowie eine Japan-EP geschafft hat).
Ritchie Sambora jedenfalls war von „Livin‘ On A Prayer“ überzeugt. Tempo etwas hochgeschraubt, Talk-Box aus der Schublade geholt und fertig war der ikonische Song, der 1987 die Spitze der US Charts anführte.
Inhaltlich dreht sich der Song um Tommy und Gina (welche auf dem Album „New Jersey“ im Song „99 In The Shade“ und 2000 im Song „It’s My Life“ zu einem kleinen Revival kamen), ein Paar, welches in Ronald Reagans Amerika damit kämpft, über die Runden zu kommen. Tommy verliert seinen Job als Hafenarbeiter, und Gina muss mit ihrer Arbeit als Bedienung in einem Diner das Geld für ihr gemeinsames Leben verdienen. Sorgen, Zweifel, Angst vor der Zukunft und das Hoffen auf ein Wunder… Seit Jon Bon Jovi’s Jugend war Bruce Springsteen ein grosser Einfluss für ihn. Mit den Lyrics zu „Livin‘ On A Prayer“ kam er an die Erzählweise des „Boss“, der bekannt ist für seine Geschichten über die Arbeiterklasse und die „kleinen Leute“, wohl so nahe heran, wie es ihm möglich war.
„Livin‘ On A Prayer“, die zweite Single-Auskopplung von „Slippery When Wet“, das im August 1986 erschien, hatte den Song „Wild In The Streets“ als B-Seite und wurde im Oktober 1986 veröffentlicht.
Was sonst noch geschaht (Januar 1986)
Nicht nur musikalisch war 1986 ein hervorragender Jahrgang, auch im Kino starteten einige Filme, welche heute zu Klassikern oder Kultfilmen zählten. Der Januar startete eher schwach. Erwähnenswert ist „Hannah und ihre Schwestern“ von Woody Allen. „Iron Eagle“ war vielleicht nicht der Überfilm, konnte aber mit einem Soundtrack um Bands wie KING KOBRA, DIO, HELIX als auch QUEEN (die waren 1986 auf einigen Soundtracks verteten) aufwarten.
Und natürlich passierte einiges in der Welt. Alphons Egli trat sein Amt als Bundespräsident der Schweiz an. Die USA konnten endlich offiziell Waffen an den Iran liefern, und mussten nicht mehr Israel und Portugal als Hintermänner benutzen. Iran war im Krieg mit dem Irak und die USA damals noch auf Seiten des Iran. Das Space Shuttle „Challenger“ hob entgegen der Warnungen von Ingenieuren ab und explodierte in 15 Kilometern Höhe. Alle 7 Astronauten kamen um’s Leben.

1986 was an iconic year for music. The foundation was laid for many careers. This is a very subjective list of 12 songs that are turning 40 this year. One each month.
‘Once upon a time, not so long ago’… Hardly anything reminds you more of how old you’ve become than when your favourite songs from your youth turn 40 or 50. And there are many from 1986 that have gone down in music history in some way, kick-started the careers of bands and artists, or – yes, MTV was at its peak back then – left a lasting impression and set new standards with their music videos.
With ‘Livin‘ On A Prayer’, the five-piece band from New Jersey achieved what is arguably the biggest hit of their career, which even 40 years later has lost none of its appeal. After their debut ‘Bon Jovi’ in 1984 and the underrated ‘7800° Fahrenheit’ (the temperature at which ‚Metal‘ begins to melt) in 1985, the band enlisted the help of songwriter and hit producer Desmond Child to really get their career off the ground.
In the basement of Sambora’s parents‘ house, Child, Sambora and Bon Jovi worked out a few songs, one of which would become ‘Livin‘ On A Prayer’. At first, things didn’t look good for the song, as Mr Bon Jovi wasn’t satisfied with the initial arrangement (the ‘original’ can be heard as a hidden track on the album ‘100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong’, which also features ‘Edge Of A Broken Heart’, another song from these sessions but was not used for ‘Slippery When Wet’ – it made it onto the B-side of the ‘Livin‘ On A Prayer’ maxi single and a Japanese EP).
Ritchie Sambora, at any rate, was convinced by ‘Livin‘ On A Prayer’. The tempo was ramped up a little, the talk box was taken out of storage, and the iconic song that topped the US charts in 1987 was ready.
The song is about Tommy and Gina (who made a small comeback on the album ‘New Jersey’ in the song ‘99 In The Shade’ and in 2000 in the song ‘It’s My Life’), a couple struggling to make ends meet in Ronald Reagan’s America. Tommy loses his job as a dock worker, and Gina has to earn money for their life together by working as a waitress in a diner. Worries, doubts, fear of the future and living on a prayer… Bruce Springsteen has been a major influence on Jon Bon Jovi since his youth. With the lyrics to ‘Livin‘ On A Prayer’, he came as close as he possibly could to the narrative style of ‘The Boss’, who is known for his stories about the working class and ‘ordinary people’.
‘Livin‘ On A Prayer’, the second single release from ‘Slippery When Wet’, which was released in August 1986, had the song ‘Wild In The Streets’ as its B-side and was released in October 1986.
What else happened (January 1986)
Not only was 1986 an outstanding year for music, but it also saw the release of several films that are now considered classics or cult films. January got off to a rather slow start. Worth mentioning is Woody Allen’s ‘Hannah and Her Sisters’. ‘Iron Eagle’ may not have been the greatest film ever made, but it did feature a soundtrack by bands such as KING KOBRA, DIO, HELIX and QUEEN (who were featured on several soundtracks in 1986).
And, of course, a lot was happening in the world. Alphons Egli took office as President of Switzerland. The USA was finally able to officially supply weapons to Iran and no longer had to use Israel and Portugal as intermediaries. Iran was at war with Iraq, and the USA was still on Iran’s side at that time. The space shuttle Challenger took off despite warnings from engineers and exploded at an altitude of 15 kilometres. All seven astronauts were killed.
