CHEAP TRICK kennt man diesseits des Atlantik vor allem durch ihre Hits „I Want You To Want Me“ oder „Surrender“. Das wird der Band nicht gerecht, die seit 52 Jahren unterwegs ist und nun ihr 21. Studioalbum veröffentlicht. Produziert von CHEAP TRICK zusammen mit ihrem langjährigen Partner Julian Raymond und gemischt vom fünffachen GRAMMY®-Gewinner Chris Lord-Alge (GREEN DAY, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND).
Heute besteht das Lineup aus Gründungsmitglied Rick Nielsen an der Leadgitarre sowie Tom Petersson am Bass. Kurz nach Gründung der Band im Jahr 1973 stiess Sänger und Gitarrist Robin Zander 1974 zur Band. Heute wird das Trio durch Livemusiker verstärkt, aktuell durch Daxx Nielsen an den Drums und Robin Taylor Zander – wie die Namen vermuten lassen, handelt es sich um die Söhne der gleichnamigen Ur-Mitglieder. Was muss man zur Band sonst noch wissen? Vielleicht, dass sie mit „Live At Budokan“ 1980 ihr erfolgreichstes Album veröffentlichten. Das Budokan ist eigentlich eine Kampfsporthalle, wurde weltweit jedoch berühmt, weil dort neben CHEAP TRICK viele grosse Bands gespielt oder Livealben aufgenommen haben; die BEATLES, BOB DYLAN, QUEEN, ERIC CLAPTON oder SANTANA.

Und das Album? Es bringt elf Titel mit einer Vielfalt an Stilen, dass man beinahe meinen könnte, es wäre ein Zusammentreffen verschiedenster Bands. Was auffällt; gleich beim ersten Hören bekommt man den Eindruck, als stünde da Paul Mc Cartney von den BEATLES mit auf der Bühne. Dieses Gefühl begleitet einen durch das gesamte Album – ohne wie eine Kopie zu wirken. Ganz offiziell ist „The Riff That Won’t Quit“ eine Hommage an AEROSMITH. Neben dieser rockigen Nummer liefern die Jungs aber das, was man von ihnen kennt – einen Mix aus verschiedensten Genreanleihen, sie loten den gesamten Bereich zwischen Rock und Pop aus. Näher am Pop liegt das epische „Twelve Gates“, eine eingängige Midtempoballade, die zeigt, dass Robin Zander stimmlich nach wie vor auf der Höhe ist. Eine Rock’n’Roll-Nummer erster Güte ist der Titeltrack, dessen Gesang an IGGY POP erinnert. Mit „Bet It All“ liefert das Trio einen bluesartigen Song, „The Best Thing“ führt dann definitiv in die poppigen Gefilde, ähnlich wie „Love Gone“.
Definitiv im Lande der BEATLES angekommen ist man mit dem letzten Track des Albums „Wham Boom Bang“. Dieser Titel könnte definitiv von den Fab Four stammen – auch wenn er nicht zu ihren grossen Hits zählen würde.

Fazit

Wer mag abwechslungsreichen Poprock von einer der wichtigeren Bands aus den Siebzigern, die bis heute immer wieder Alben mit überraschenden musikalischen Wendungen auf den Markt gebracht haben? Der sollte sich dieses Album unbedingt zulegen. Wer Fan der Band war und ist, für den ist eh klar; kaufen!

CHEAP TRICK is best known on this side of the Atlantic for hits such as „I Want You To Want Me“ and „Surrender“. But that doesn’t do justice to a band that has been around for 52 years and is now releasing its 21st studio album. Produced by CHEAP TRICK together with their long-time partner Julian Raymond and mixed by five-time GRAMMY® winner Chris Lord-Alge (GREEN DAY, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND).
Today, the line-up consists of founding member Rick Nielsen on lead guitar and Tom Petersson on bass. Shortly after the band was formed in 1973, singer and guitarist Robin Zander joined the band in 1974. Today, the trio is reinforced by live musicians, currently Daxx Nielsen on drums and Robin Taylor Zander – as the names suggest, they are the sons of the original members of the same name. What else is there to know about the band? Perhaps that they released their most successful album, „Live At Budokan“, in 1980. The Budokan is actually a martial arts hall, but it became famous worldwide because, in addition to CHEAP TRICK, many big bands played there or recorded live albums there, including THE BEATLES, BOB DYLAN, QUEEN, ERIC CLAPTON and SANTANA.

And the album? It features eleven tracks with such a variety of styles that you could almost think it was a collaboration between different bands. What’s striking is that, right from the first listen, you get the impression that Paul McCartney from the Beatles is on stage with them. This feeling accompanies you throughout the entire album – without seeming like a copy. Officially, „The Riff That Won’t Quit“ is a tribute to AEROSMITH. In addition to this rock number, however, the guys deliver what we know them for – a mix of various genre influences, exploring the entire spectrum between rock and pop. Closer to pop is the epic „Twelve Gates“, a catchy mid-tempo ballad that shows that Robin Zander is still at the top of his game vocally. The title track is a first-class rock ’n‘ roll number, with vocals reminiscent of Iggy Pop. With „Bet It All“, the trio delivers a bluesy song, while „The Best Thing“ definitely leads into pop territory, similar to „Love Gone“.
The last track on the album, „Wham Boom Bang“, definitely takes us into the realm of the BEATLES. This track could definitely have come from the Fab Four – even if it wouldn’t be one of their biggest hits.

Conclusion

If you like varied pop rock from one of the most important bands of the seventies, who have continued to release albums with surprising musical twists to this day, then you should definitely buy this album. If you were and still are a fan of the band, then it’s a no-brainer: buy it!
