Mitte Oktober, ein Monat vor Weihnachten, und ich muss sagen: 2025 hat für mich bislang kaum grandiose Highlights hervorgebracht. Ein definitiver Lichtblick ist „Once In A Blue Moon“ von CIVIL DAZE aus Schweden. Der Mix aus AOR und 70s/80s Melodic Rock ist toll umgesetzt, mit wirklich gutem Songwriting als Fundament. Die Stimme von Helena Sommerdahl gibt den Songs einen würzigen Geschmack. Durchaus eigenständig erinnert sie in Momenten an Künstlerinnen wie Robin Beck oder Lee Aaron, ohne zu kopieren. Die Sängerin sticht heraus, weil sie den klassischen Rotz und die Attitüde längst vergangener Jahrzehnte mitbringt, ohne altbacken zu wirken. Die Songs lagen wegen verschiedener Umstände viele Jahre auf Eis. Der Albumtitel „Once In A Blue Moon“ bringt diese Gelegenheit des „verspäteten“ Releases perfekt zum Ausdruck. Zum Glück haben die Songs nun doch den Weg auf Silberling und Streaming geschafft.
„Top Of The World“ ist ein erdiger Rocker und klasse Einstieg ins Album. Helena Sommerdahl gibt die klassische Rockröhre und verleiht dem Song eine gehörige Portion Dreck. WHITESNAKE-Vibes sind hier deutlich spürbar. Melodisch geht es weiter mit dem groovigen „A Million Miles Away“. Hier wird tief in der 80s Hair- und Melodic Rock-Kiste gewühlt, inklusive kurzem Twin-Guitar-Solo.
More Cowbell! Das ist das Motto des Intros von „Face Down In The Dirt“. Dem Titel entsprechend ist der Song weniger glatt poliert: erdiger Hard Rock mit marginalen Blues-Anleihen und WHITESNAKE-Chor im Pre-Chorus. Auch im Gitarrensolo dürfen wir die Cowbell wieder spüren. Und jetzt: Synthies! Damit haben sie mich schon beim ersten Akkord. In „Paradise“ geht es AOR-mässig zu, die Keyboards prägen das 80er-Nostalgie-Gefühl. Der Song treibt ordentlich voran und lädt zum Kopfnicken ein.
Der nächste Song fängt als Ballade an und entpuppt sich schnell als Rocker, sobald die Band einsetzt. Helena brilliert hier mit ihren Vocals, auch der Soloteil überzeugt im Arrangement. Mit über sechs Minuten „Got To Go“ der längste Song des Albums, aber ohne Längen. Geklotzt und nicht gekleckert wird bei „The Right Kind Of Lovin'“. Der Song rockt ordentlich los und macht entsprechend gute Laune. Im Herzen ein Blues-Rock-Song unter Steroiden, treibt er sich über viel zu kurze 3:23 Minuten. Mitsing-Refrain, Gitarrensolo und Attitüde: alles dabei.
Mit grossem Refrain wartet „Turn The Page“ auf. Episch und hymnisch werden wir aufgefordert, das nächste Kapitel aufzuschlagen. Schön, wenn man mit einem tollen Song musikalisch daran erinnert wird. Der eingängige Mitsing-Refrain wird mich garantiert den Rest des Tages begleiten. Und herrjeh! Diese Band schaltet keinen Gang runter! Während andere Bands längst zwei Balladen eingeflochten hätten, rockt CIVIL DAZE einfach mit „Heroes“ weiter. Gut so! Man wird gar nicht erst verleitet zu verschnaufen. Auch dieser Song hat alle Zutaten eines ordentlichen Rockers. Etwas mehr Hard Rock hier, steht der Band aber gut.
„Revolution“ ist ein Hybrid aus Hard Rock, Melodic Rock und AOR. Die Synthies sind wieder tragender Bestandteil und bringen einen schönen Farbtupfer ins Soundbild. Song 9 und noch keine Aussetzer oder Balladen? Love it! Ja, sie geben alles. Mit „Givin‘ It All“ endet das Album. Ein gelungener Abschluss des Debüts, mit dem die Band nochmals hochmelodische Refrains zelebriert. Schön war’s!
Fazit
Mit „Once In A Blue Moon“ ist CIVIL DAZE ein hervorragendes Debüt gelungen. Es salopp als „WHITESNAKE mit Frontfrau“ zu betiteln, wird dem Album nicht gerecht, zeigt aber die Richtung auf, mit sowohl glatt polierten Hard/Hair Rock Songs, aber auch erdig rockigen Hard/Blues Rock Stücken. Mit Helena am Mikro ist dem schwedischen Fünfer ein Coup gelungen. Aber eine tolle Stimme allein macht noch kein gutes Album. Die Songs sind allesamt stimmig und machen ordentlich Laune. Die Band spielt tight und auf den Punkt. Jedem einzelnen Song hört man an, dass die Truppe endlos viel Spass beim Einspielen hatte. Eines meiner wenigen echten Highlights 2025 und definitiv eine Band, die ich gerne live erleben möchte.

It’s mid-October, a month before Christmas, and I have to say: 2025 hasn’t really produced any great highlights for me so far. One definite ray of hope is „Once In A Blue Moon“ by CIVIL DAZE from Sweden. The mix of AOR and 70s/80s melodic rock is brilliantly executed, with really good songwriting as its foundation. Helena Sommerdahl’s voice gives the songs a spicy flavour. Completely unique, she is reminiscent of artists such as Robin Beck or Lee Aaron at times, without copying them. The singer stands out because she brings the classic sass and attitude of decades long past without seeming old-fashioned. Due to various circumstances, the songs were put on hold for many years. The album title „Once In A Blue Moon“ perfectly expresses this opportunity for a „belated“ release. Fortunately, the songs have now made their way onto CD and streaming services.
„Top Of The World“ is an earthy rocker and a great introduction to the album. Helena Sommerdahl provides the classic rock vocals and gives the song a good dose of grit. WHITESNAKE vibes are clearly noticeable here. The melodic vibe continues with the groovy „A Million Miles Away“. Here, they delve deep into the 80s hair and melodic rock repertoire, including a short twin guitar solo.
More cowbell! That’s the motto of the intro to „Face Down In The Dirt“. In keeping with the title, the song is less polished: earthy hard rock with marginal blues influences and a WHITESNAKE-style chorus in the pre-chorus. We get to hear the cowbell again in the guitar solo. And now: synths! They’ve got me hooked from the very first chord. „Paradise“ has an AOR feel to it, with the keyboards creating an 80s nostalgia vibe. The song drives forward nicely and invites you to nod your head along.
The next song starts as a ballad and quickly turns into a rocker as soon as the band kicks in. Helena shines with her vocals here, and the solo part is also impressive in the arrangement. At over six minutes, „Got To Go“ is the longest song on the album, but it never feels long. „The Right Kind Of Lovin'“ goes all out. The song rocks hard and puts you in a good mood. At its heart, it’s a blues rock song on steroids, driving itself forward over a far too short 3:23 minutes. Sing-along chorus, guitar solo and attitude: it’s all there.
„Turn The Page“ has a big chorus. Epic and anthemic, we are urged to turn to the next chapter. It’s nice to be reminded of this musically with a great song. The catchy sing-along chorus is guaranteed to stay with me for the rest of the day. And my goodness! This band doesn’t slow down! While other bands would have long since woven in two ballads, CIVIL DAZE simply rocks on with „Heroes“. Good! You’re not even tempted to take a breather. This song also has all the ingredients of a proper rocker. A little more hard rock here, but it suits the band well.
„Revolution“ is a hybrid of hard rock, melodic rock and AOR. The synths are once again a key component and add a nice splash of colour to the soundscape. Song 9 and still no misfires or ballads? Love it! Yes, they give it their all. The album ends with „Givin‘ It All“. A successful conclusion to the debut, with which the band once again celebrates highly melodic choruses. It was great!
Conclusion
With „Once In A Blue Moon“, CIVIL DAZE has made an excellent debut. Casually labelling it „WHITESNAKE with a female frontwoman“ doesn’t do the album justice, but it does point in the right direction, with both smoothly polished hard/hair rock songs and earthy, rocking hard/blues rock tracks. With Helena on the mic, the Swedish quintet has pulled off a coup. But a great voice alone does not make a good album. The songs are all coherent and put you in a good mood. The band plays tight and to the point. You can hear in every single song that the band had endless fun recording it. One of my few real highlights of 2025 and definitely a band I would love to see live.
