THE RASMUS – „Weirdo“ kommt am 12. September

Wenn eine Truppe früh grosse Hits geschrieben hat, sind die Erwartungen an jedes neue Album gross.

Das dürfte auch bei THE RASMUS der Fall sein. Die Jungs sind seit 1994 unterwegs und waren in Finnland schon länger eine grosse Nummer. Mit „In The Shadows“ sprengten sie 2003 die Grenzen ihres Heimatlandes, 2013 folgte mit „First Day Of My Life“ ein weiterer Hit und 2022 landeten sie mit „Jezebel“ einen ähnlich grossen Erfolg wie mit „In The Shadows“. Jetzt folgt also Album Nummer elf mit dem Titel „Weirdo“. Fragt sich jetzt, wie verrückt die Band oder das Album ist.

Eines ist bereits nach dem ersten Durchhören klar; Lauri Ylönen (Gesang, Keyboard), Eero Aleksi Heinonen (Bass), Emilia ’Emppu’ Suhonen (Gitarre) und Aki Markus Hakala (Schlagzeug) haben ziemlich viele Hookliner auf das Album gepackt. Das startet gleich zu Beginn mit „Creatures Of Chaos“ und geht dann sofort weiter mit „Break These Chains“ oder dem Titeltrack „Weirdo“.
Etwas weniger spricht mich „Banksy“ an. Der Track ist zwar auch sehr eingängig, für meinen Geschmack etwas zu „weichgespielt“ – zumindest im Gegensatz zum restlichen Album. Das erscheint mir nämlich durchaus etwas härter in der Gangart als frühere Scheiben.

Allerdings muss man festhalten; THE RASMUS sind eine Band, die immer relativ hart am Rand zum Poprock mäandert. Ein Beispiel dafür ist „Love Is A Bitch“ – mir persönlich gibt es da zuviel Keyboard, das sich symphonisch, wie Streicher anhört – der Track ist definitiv nicht mein Ding.
Mit „You Want It All “ liefern sie eine Powerballade, ebenfalls sehr eingänglich mit deutlich Radiopotenzial für Mainstreamstationen, die sonst eher zurückhaltend mit Rockgeschichten sind.
Ebenso balladesk landet „I’m Coming For You“ – das driftet mir dann definitiv zu stark in Richtung „ABBA in Rock“.

Fazit

Mein Fazit war nach dem ersten und bleibt es nach mehrfachem Hören durchzogen. Sicher, ich gehöre jetzt nicht gerade zum Beuteschema der Finnen. Und das Album ist technisch absolut gut gemacht.
Mir gefällt sehr gut, was ich in der ersten Hälfte der Scheibe höre, die Band liefert einige fette Nummern, hart und knackig. Wäre das gesamte Album wie die ganz oben erwähnten Tracks (Videoauskopplungen) gestrickt, ich gäbe gerne acht oder neun Punkte.
So bleibt es etwas hinter meinen Erwartungen zurück. Nichtsdestotrotz – für den Fan von THE RASMUS ist die Scheibe ein absolutes Muss, das man ohne Bedauern kaufen darf!

This is likely to be the case with THE RASMUS as well. The lads have been around since 1994 and have been a big deal in Finland for quite some time. With „In The Shadows“ they broke out of their home country in 2003, followed by another hit in 2013 with „First Day Of My Life“ and in 2022 they achieved a similar level of success with „Jezebel“ as they did with „In The Shadows“. Now comes their eleventh album, entitled „Weirdo“. The question is, how weird is the band or the album?

One thing is clear after the first listen: Lauri Ylönen (vocals, keyboard), Eero Aleksi Heinonen (bass), Emilia ‚Emppu‘ Suhonen (guitar) and Aki Markus Hakala (drums) have packed quite a few hook lines onto the album. It starts right at the beginning with ‚Creatures Of Chaos‘ and then continues immediately with ‚Break These Chains‘ or the title track ‚Weirdo‘.
„Banksy“ appeals to me a little less. The track is also very catchy, but a little too „soft“ for my taste – at least in contrast to the rest of the album. That seems to me to be a little harder in tone than earlier albums.

However, it should be noted that THE RASMUS are a band that always meanders relatively close to pop rock. One example of this is „Love Is A Bitch“ – for me personally, there’s too much keyboard that sounds symphonic, like strings – the track is definitely not my thing.
With „You Want It All“, they deliver a power ballad that is also very catchy and has clear radio potential for mainstream stations that are otherwise rather cautious with rock songs.
„I’m Coming For You“ is equally balladic – for me, it definitely drifts too strongly in the direction of „ABBA in rock“.

Conclusion

My conclusion after the first listen remains the same after multiple listens. Sure, I’m not exactly the Finns‘ target audience. And the album is technically very well done.
I really like what I hear in the first half of the album; the band delivers some great tracks that are hard and crisp. If the entire album were structured like the tracks mentioned above (video releases), I would gladly give it eight or nine points.
As it is, it falls a little short of my expectations. Nevertheless, for fans of THE RASMUS, this album is an absolute must-have that you can buy without regret!
