CRAZY LIXX – „Thrill Of The Bite“
Typisches CRAZY LIXX Album – nicht weniger, aber auch nicht mehr

Seit über zwei Jahrzehnten liefern CRAZY LIXX nun schon klassischen Hard Rock, inspiriert von Grössen wie Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Alice Cooper oder Skid Row. Die Schweden haben sich mit ihrem Stil in der Szene etabliert und stehen für eingängige Melodien, stampfende Rhythmen, überlebensgrosse Refrains und eine gehörige Portion 80s-Nostalgie. Mit „Thrill Of The Bite“ legen sie ihr erstes reguläres Album seit „Street Lethal“ (2021) vor, nachdem sie 2024 mit „Two Shots At Glory“ eine Sammlung von Cover-Songs und Neuaufnahmen veröffentlicht hatten. Mit Danny Rexton ist mittlerweile nur noch ein Gründungsmitglied bei der Truppe dabei. In seiner Rolle als Hauptsongwriter dürfte sich allerdings nicht all zu viel ändern.
Das Album wird mit einem typischen CRAZY LIXX-Stampfer eröffnet, der mit einer starken Strophe aufwartet. Allerdings fällt der Pre-Chorus bei „Highway Hurricane“ etwas aus dem Rahmen, und auch der Refrain wirkt nicht ganz so mitreissend, wie man es sich wünschen würde. Überhaupt scheint der Song aus 3 einzelnen Stücken (Strophe, Pre-Chorus, Refrain) zusammengeschustert worden zu sein, die nicht so richtig zueinander passen wollen. Mit „Who Said Rock N’ Roll Is Dead“, einer bereits im Vorfeld veröffentlichten Single, liefern die Schweden einen weiteren Up-Tempo-Rocker. Auch hier wirken Strophe und Pre-Chorus etwas zusammengesetzt, aber spätestens mit dem eingängigen Refrain finden CRAZY LIXX wieder in ihre bewährte Spur. Man nimmt es den Mannen ab, dass der Rock N‘ Roll noch nicht (ganz) tot ist!
„Little Miss Dangerous“, ebenfalls eine Vorab-Single, ist mit über 6 Minuten Spiellänge ungewöhnlich lang, schleppt sich aber etwas durch die Songlänge, endet dafür aber mit einem fast schon ESC-reifen Finale! Der klassische CRAZY LIXX-Refrain sorgt zwar für Wiedererkennungswert, aber insgesamt fehlt es dem Song etwas an Drive. Endlich ein knackiger Stampfer, der aus einem Guss wirkt! Bei „Call Of The Wild“ zeigt sich die Band von ihrer besten Seite: treibend, melodisch und ohne überflüssige Spielereien. So soll es sein!
Mit „Recipe For Revolution“ geht es munter weiter – ein solider Hard Rock-Track, der sich gut ins Gesamtbild fügt, aber auch nicht unbedingt herausragt. Dafür bringt „Run Run Wild“ eine willkommene Abwechslung ins Album. Der Song hat eine andere Atmosphäre als die vorherigen Nummern und wirkt frischer und inspirierter – für mich eindeutig der stärkste Track auf dem Album! Davon hätten sie gerne mehr drauf packen können. „Midnight Rebels“ bleibt dagegen blass und kann nicht wirklich Akzente setzen.
Die Single „Hunt For Danger“ entpuppt sich als eine Art sich als Mid-Tempo-Powerballade mit einer schönen Grundstimmung. Sie sorgt für Abwechslung, aber auch dieser Song bleibt über die gesamte Laufzeit etwas eintönig. Mit einem Drum-Intro und einem fetzigen Riff startet „Final Warning“. Im Refrain gibt es dann noch eine kurze IRON MAIDEN „Wasted Years“ Gedächtnisbasslinie, die für einen Moment aufhorchen lässt. Alles in Allem ein dynamischer, schmissiger Song mit ordentlichem Drive. Zum Abschluss gibt es „Stick It Out“, der sich stampfend ins Finale des Albums bewegt. Wer gehofft hat, dass es noch ein ordentliches Finale gibt, mit welchem CRAZY LIXX die Kopfhörer oder Lautsprecher nochmals so richtig abfackeln, wird abermals enttäuscht: Leider endet „Thrill Of The Bite„ nicht mit einem fulminanten Knall, sondern bloss mit einem weitern guten, aber nicht unbedingt erinnerungswürdigen Song.
Fazit
CRAZY LIXX bleiben sich treu und liefern mit „Thrill Of The Bite„ ein Album, das ihren Fans genau das bietet, was sie erwarten: melodischer Hard Rock mit 80s-Vibes und hymnischen Refrains, wenngleich mit weniger Höhepunkten als gewohnt. Leider verlassen sie dabei nur selten ihre Komfortzone, sodass echte Überraschungen ausbleiben. Ein weiteres Manko ist die Produktion: Der Mix wirkt etwas vor allem bei den Schlagzeug-Becken überkomprimiert, jeder Schlag auf einen dieser metallenen Teller sorgt für einen unnatürlich wabbeligen Ton.
Nicht falsch verstehen: „Thrill Of The Bite„ ist bei weitem kein schlechtes Album. Aber einerseits ist man von CRAZY LIXX anderes gewohnt, und wenn das Album im Pressetext die Band in „neue Höhen katapultieren“ soll, erwarte ich schon einiges mehr. Trotzdem gibt es mit „Run Run Wild“ oder „Call Of The Wild“ einige echte Highlights, die das Album lohnenswert machen. Wer CRAZY LIXX mag, wird auch hier seine Freude haben – Innovationen darf man aber nicht erwarten.

For over two decades, CRAZY LIXX have been delivering classic hard rock inspired by greats like Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Alice Cooper and Skid Row. The Swedes have established themselves in the scene with their style and stand for catchy melodies, pounding rhythms, larger-than-life choruses and a healthy dose of 80s nostalgia. ‘Thrill Of The Bite’ is their first regular album since “Street Lethal” (2021), after they had released “Two Shots At Glory” in 2024, a collection of cover songs and new recordings. With Danny Rexton, only one founding member is now left in the group. However, not too much is likely to change in his role as main songwriter.
The album opens with a typical CRAZY LIXX stomper that boasts a strong verse. However, the pre-chorus of ‘Highway Hurricane’ is somewhat out of the ordinary, and the chorus doesn’t seem quite as rousing as one would hope either. In fact, the song seems to have been cobbled together from three individual pieces (verse, pre-chorus, chorus) that don’t really go together. With ‘Who Said Rock N’ Roll Is Dead‘, a previously released single, the Swedes deliver another up-tempo rocker. Here, too, the verses and pre-chorus seem a bit forced, but with the catchy chorus, CRAZY LIXX find their way back to their proven track. You can believe the guys when they say that rock n’ roll is not dead (yet)!
‘Little Miss Dangerous’, also a pre-release single, is unusually long at over 6 minutes, but it drags a bit due to the length of the song, but ends with an almost ESC-ready finale! The classic CRAZY LIXX chorus ensures recognition value, but overall the song lacks a bit of drive. Finally, a crisp stomper that seems to be cast from a single mould! On ‘Call Of The Wild’ the band shows their best side: driving, melodic and without unnecessary gimmicks. That’s how it should be!
‘Recipe For Revolution’ continues in the same lively vein – a solid hard rock track that fits well into the overall picture, but doesn’t necessarily stand out. ‘Run Run Wild’ brings a welcome change to the album. The song has a different atmosphere than the previous numbers and seems fresher and more inspired – for me, it’s clearly the strongest track on the album! They could have put more of it on there. “Midnight Rebels”, on the other hand, remains pale and can’t really set accents.
The single ‘Hunt For Danger’ turns out to be a kind of mid-tempo power ballad with a nice mood. It provides variety, but even this song remains somewhat monotonous over the entire duration. ‘Final Warning’ starts with a drum intro and a cool riff. In the chorus, there is a short IRON MAIDEN ‘Wasted Years’ bass line, which makes you sit up and take notice for a moment. All in all, a dynamic, snappy song with a good drive. Finally, there is ‘Stick It Out’, which stomps its way to the album finale. Those who had hoped for a proper finale, with which CRAZY LIXX would once again really blow up the headphones or speakers, will be disappointed again: unfortunately, ‘Thrill Of The Bite’ doesn’t end with a brilliant bang, but merely with another good song that’s not necessarily memorable.
Conclusion
CRAZY LIXX remain true to themselves and deliver an album with ‘Thrill Of The Bite’ that offers their fans exactly what they expect: melodic hard rock with 80s vibes and anthemic choruses, albeit with fewer highlights than usual. Unfortunately, they rarely leave their comfort zone, so there are no real surprises. Another shortcoming is the production: the mix seems a bit over-compressed, especially on the cymbals; every hit on one of these metal plates produces an unnaturally wobbly tone.
Don’t get me wrong: ‘Thrill Of The Bite’ is by no means a bad album. But on the one hand, you’re used to something different from CRAZY LIXX, and if the album is supposed to ‘catapult the band to new heights’, as the press release claims, I expect a lot more. Nevertheless, there are some real highlights with ‘Run Run Wild’ or ‘Call Of The Wild’ that make the album worthwhile. If you like CRAZY LIXX, you’ll enjoy this too – but don’t expect any innovations.
