ANCIENT CURSE – „Dimension 5“
Seit vierzig Jahren im Geschäft mit progressivem Powermetal – reicht das als Qualitätslabel?

Pepe Pierez – Guitars/Vocals, Gunnar Erxleben – Guitars, Matthias Schröder – Drums und Thorsten Penz – Bass, so sieht das Lineup der norddeutschen Prog Power Metaller aus. Das Quartett – oder wer immer bei denen dafür verantwortlich ist – hat definitiv Eier. Einen Track mit 15 Minuten Laufzeit auf den Markt zu werfen ist heute schon beinahe gleichzusetzen, den Menschen ein Buch ohne Bilder und mit mehr als zwanzig Seiten Text in die Hand zu geben. Klar, progressive meint komplexe und längerer Titel, eine Viertelstunde erinnert aber schon an Zeiten von PINK FLOYD oder YES in den Sechzigern und Siebzigern des letzten Jahrtausends. Allerdings können die Jungs auch kürzer: „Paranormal Coincidence (G-LOC Part 3)“ dauert gerade einmal zwei Minuten 42 Sekunden, der paranormale Zufall ist aber auch eher eine Art Abspann, um das Publikum standesgemäss aus dem Werk zu entlassen. Beeindruckend ist der orchestrierte Track allemal.
Und sonst? Da wäre der erwähnte Longplayer in Singleform. Wer genau Lucrecia ist, entzieht sich meiner Kenntnis. Bekannt ist mir die Borgia aus der italienischen Renaissance. Die Fürstin, Intrigantin, Ehebrecherin, Giftmischerin und Hure aus der einflussreichen Familie, uneheliche Tochter eines Papstes und dessen enge Vertraute. Das geschah zu einer Zeit, als die katholische Kirche noch zu ihrer Sexualität stand… Ob der Track sich tatsächlich mit ihr beschäftigt oder mit der mythischen, tugendhaften Lucretia, welche um 600 v.chr. in Rom lebte – wen interessiert’s? Letztlich liefern die Bremer hier einen Track, der auch musikalisch aus verschiedenen Teilen besteht, mal beinahe thrashig, manchmal eher ruhig und fast balladenhaft, auf jeden Fall so, dass sich alle Musiker ausleben können. Einzig für den Bass ist die Plattform relativ bescheiden.
Ein beeindruckender Track mit gut umgesetztem Video ist der Titeltrack „Dimension 5“. Er zeigt die musikalische und technische Qualität der Band. Das fette Riffing, die präzise und abwechslunsgreiche Drumline, ein stabiler Bassboden und Pierez‘ charsimatische Stimme gepaart mit epischen Gitarrensoli – das hat schon was.
Ich könnte mich jetzt über weitere Tracks auslassen, allerdings empfehle ich da eher, sich die bisher veröffentlichen Tracks – oder Videos – anzuschauen. Sie geben ein ganz gutes Bild des Albums ab.
Fazit
MIt ANCIENT CURSE hat El Puerto Records ein heisses Eisen im Feuer und es ist schade, dass die Band nicht stärker wahrgenommen wird. Der Vierer aus der Hansestadt braucht sich weder mit seinem Studioalbum noch seiner Livepräsenz zu verstecken. Jetzt wäre es einfach schön, wenn sich Veranstalter der Band annehmen würden – gerne auch der grösseren Festivals. Verdient haben die Jungs das, weil 40 Jahre zwar viel Erfahrung geben, die Qualität des Albums aber aus sich wächst und sich selber rechtfertigt. Empfehlung – auf jeden Fall kaufen.

Pepe Pierez – Guitars/Vocals, Gunnar Erxleben – Guitars, Matthias Schröder – Drums and Thorsten Penz – Bass, that’s the line-up of the North German prog power metal band. The quartet – or whoever is responsible for it – definitely has balls. Throwing a track with a running time of 15 minutes onto the market today is almost the same as giving people a book without pictures and with more than twenty pages of text. Sure, progressive means complex and longer titles, but a quarter of an hour is reminiscent of the times of PINK FLOYD or YES in the sixties and seventies of the last millennium. However, the guys can also do shorter: ‘Paranormal Coincidence (G-LOC Part 3)’ lasts just two minutes 42 seconds, but the paranormal coincidence is also more of a kind of credits to release the audience from the work in a befitting manner. The orchestrated track is always impressive.
And what else? There is the aforementioned longplayer in single form. Who exactly Lucrecia is, is beyond my knowledge. I know the Borgia from the Italian Renaissance. The princess, schemer, adulteress, poisoner and whore from the influential family, illegitimate daughter of a pope and his close confidante. This happened at a time when the Catholic Church still stood by its sexuality… Whether the track is actually about her or the mythical, virtuous Lucretia, who lived in Rome around 600 BC – who cares? Ultimately, the band from Bremen delivers a track that also consists of different parts musically, sometimes almost thrashy, sometimes rather calm and almost balladic, in any case in such a way that all the musicians can express themselves. Only for the bass, the platform is relatively modest.
The title track ‘Dimension 5’ is an impressive track with a well-made video. It showcases the band’s musical and technical quality. The fat riffing, the precise and varied drumming, a solid bass and Pierez‘ charismatic voice paired with epic guitar solos – that’s something.
I could go on about other tracks, but I’d rather recommend taking a look at the tracks – or videos – that have been released so far. They give a pretty good picture of the album.
Conclusion
With ANCIENT CURSE, El Puerto Records has a hot prospect and it’s a shame that the band is not better known. The four-piece from the Hanseatic city has nothing to hide, neither with their studio album nor their live presence. Now it would just be nice if promoters would take on the band – gladly also for the bigger festivals. The guys deserve it, because 40 years may give a lot of experience, but the quality of the album grows from within and justifies itself. Recommendation – definitely buy!
