THE OFFSPRING – „Supercharged“

10 Songs, 32 Minuten Spielzeit – für ein Punkalbum passt das schon einmal. Aber haben es THE OFFSPRING noch drauf?

Genau 40 Jahre sind die Jungs von THE OFFSPRING unterwegs, ihren Kultstatus haben sie bereits auf sicher, eine lange Liste an Hits ebenfalls. Mit „Supercharged“ liefert die Band ihr elftes Studioalbum.
Bryan „Dexter“ Holland – Vocals, Kevin „Noodles“ Wasserman – Guitars, Todd Morse – Bass, Jonah Nimoy – Multiinstrumentalist und Brandon Pertzborn – Drums, das ist die aktuelle Besetzung einer Band, die in ihrer Geschichte relativ wenige Lineup-Wechsel hatte. Live habe ich THE OFFSPRING erst einmal gesehen und zwar 2022 am GREENFIELD – Festival. Ich war damals gelinde gesagt enttäuscht und habe den Auftritt als klaren Ausfall beschrieben. Mit diesem Erlebnis gehe ich nun ans neue Album – ob ich will oder nicht.

Zehn Tracks, die meisten unter vier Minuten und mindestens ein Hit dabei „Make It All Right“. Allein dieser Track rettet ein Album – ein Hookliner im besten Sinn und eine Nummer in guter alter Punk-Manier der sanfteren Art. Das ist keine Kritik am Song, sondern ein Hinweis darauf, dass die Musik von THE OFFSPRING nur bedingt aus der SEX PISTOLES oder RAMONES-Ecke kommen. Weniger „no future, mehr Spass.
Dieser Spass zieht sich übrigens durch das Album. Es enthält keine Filler, allerdings auch nicht nur Killer. Vieles wirkt vertraut, bekannt – ein wenig wie ein Rückblick auf vier Dekaden Musik und unzählige Konzerte.

Fronter Dexter Holland: „Auf dieser Platte sprechen wir über alles, von den Erfolgen bis hin zu den Schwierigkeiten, die wir hatten – und zwar auf eine Art und Weise, die das Leben feiert, das wir gemeinsam teilen und wo wir jetzt sind.“
Das Leben feiern sie, denn das Album ist durchwegs positiv. Es gibt darauf klassische, kurze und schnelle Punktracks, die auch einer jungen Band gut stehen würden, „Truth In Fiction“ etwa, „Light It Up“ oder „The Fall Guy“. Das sind THE OFFSPRING, wie man sie hören möchte. Ein zweiter Track mit viel Hitpotenzial ist sicher „Ok, But This Is The Last Time“ – der geht sofort in den Körper, prägt sich schnell ein. Mit „Come To Brasil“ liefern sie beinahe sowas wie eine Metalnummer – Thrash-Kadenz inklusive. Das ist definitiv der härteste Track und für mich eine kleine Überraschung.
Ein weiterer Track, den man sofort als THE OFFSPRING – Machenschaft identifizieren kann ist „You Can’t Get There From Here“.
Meine Bewertung bleibt unter 10 Punkten, weil mich das Album insgesamt zwar gepackt hat, von den Beinen gehauen hat es mich jedoch nicht.

Fazit

Ich mag das Album, es hat meine Erwartungen deutlich übertroffen. THE OFFSPRING liefern alle Ingredienzen, die ein erfolgreiches Album braucht, inklusive der Singlehits „Ok, But This Is The Last Time“ und „Make It All Right“, welche in den Radios bereits rauf und runter gespielt werden.
Meine Hoffnung bleibt, dass die Kalifornier diese Energie das nächste Mal live transportieren – ich werde dabei sein. Das Album darf man getrost kaufen!

10 songs, 32 minutes playing time – for a punk album, that’s pretty good. But are THE OFFSPRING still up to it?

The guys from THE OFFSPRING have been on the road for exactly 40 years, they already have cult status and a long list of hits. With ‘Supercharged’, the band delivers their eleventh studio album.

Bryan ‘Dexter’ Holland – vocals, Kevin ‘Noodles’ Wasserman – guitars, Todd Morse – bass, Jonah Nimoy – multi-instrumentalist and Brandon Pertzborn – drums, this is the current line-up of a band that has had relatively few line-up changes in its history. I’ve only seen THE OFFSPRING live once before, at the GREENFIELD Festival in 2022. Back then, I was disappointed to say the least and described the gig as a clear failure. With this experience, I’m now going to the new album – whether I like it or not.

Ten tracks, most of them under four minutes and at least one hit, ‘Make It All Right’. This track alone saves an album – a hookliner in the best sense of the word and a number in good old punk style of the gentler kind. This is not a criticism of the song, but an indication that THE OFFSPRING’s music only comes from the SEX PISTOLES or RAMONES corner to a limited extent. Less ‘no future, more fun.
Incidentally, this fun runs through the album. It contains no fillers, but not just killers either. Much of it seems familiar, well-known – a bit like a look back at four decades of music and countless concerts.

Dexter Holland says: ‘On this record, we talk about everything, from the successes to the difficulties we’ve had – in a way that celebrates the life we share and where we are now.’

Celebrate life they do, as the album is positive throughout. There are classic, short and fast point tracks on it that would also suit a young band, such as ‘Truth In Fiction’, ‘Light It Up’ or ‘The Fall Guy’. This is THE OFFSPRING the way you want to hear them. A second track with a lot of hit potential is certainly ‘Ok, But This Is The Last Time’ – it immediately gets into your head and is quickly memorised. With ‘Come To Brasil’ they almost deliver something like a metal number – thrash cadence included. This is definitely the heaviest track and a bit of a surprise for me.
Another track that is instantly recognisable as THE OFFSPRING – machismo is ‘You Can’t Get There From Here’.
My rating remains below 10 points because the album as a whole grabbed me, but it didn’t knock me off my feet.

Conclusion

I like the album, it clearly exceeded my expectations. THE OFFSPRING deliver all the ingredients that a successful album needs, including the single hits ‘Ok, But This Is The Last Time’ and ‘Make It All Right’, which are already being played up and down on the radio.

My hope remains that the Californians will convey this energy live next time – I’ll be there. You can buy the album with confidence!
