Da ich am Releasetag bereits im Berner Oberland weilen und ganz bestimmt keine Reviews schreiben werde, geb ich meinen Senf heute noch ab.

Wenn kleinere Label geile Bands an Bord nehmen, dann ist es immer etwas schwierig, diese an Konzerten und Festivals zu platzieren. Leider ist Qualität nicht das oberste Entscheidungsmerkmal von Bookern. MY MERRY MACHINE haben aber auf jeden Fall ein Zuhause in einem Label gefunden, das eng mit den KünstlerInnen zusammenarbeitet, familiär ist und mit grossem Engagement zu Werke geht. Es wäre den Label und der Band zu gönnen, dass Veranstalter und Booker aufmerksam werden.

„Total War“ ist zwar das Debutalbum von MY MERRY MACHINE, New Comer sind sie aber nur bedingt. Die Truppe teilt sich nämlich Sängerin Kirsten Zahn-Massing mit der Goth-Metallern BLOODFLOWERZ. Zudem, auch MY MERRY MACHINE existieren seit 2018. Sie wird verstärkt durch Markus Visser – Guitars, Bass und Tim Schwarz – Drums. Gleich etwas vorgegriffen – die Truppe gehört zu jenen Trios, die auch mit wenigen Mitgliedern ordentlich Druck macht. Ich stelle mir aber vor, dass sie sich live mit einem Gast am Bass verstärken werden – Bass und Gitarre gemeinsam ist doch eine ordentliche Herausforderung.

Aber weg von personellen Eckdaten, widmen wir uns dem Album, der Musik. Die Presseinfos sprechen von Heavy Metal, ich würde das durch Melodic Death ergänzen, wenn auch nur partiell Growls vorkommen.
Was sofort auffällt, beim ersten Track bereits; die Band macht richtig Druck, steigt gleich mit fetten Drums und Bass ein, ergänzt dann durch knackiges Riffing – um dann die Bühne für Sängerin Kirsten zu öffnen. Und sorry Jungs, die ist tatsächlich Fronterin, Alleinstellungsmerkmal der Band. Einerseits merkt man ihr die Erfahrung an – klar und technisch perfekt ist ihre Stimme, gleichzeitig charismatisch. Zudem mäandert sie gekonnt zwischen Klargesang, Screams und Growling. So wird der Einstieg ins Album gleich zum Deal mit dem Teufel. Ob sie ihre Seele bereits verkauft haben, darüber geben die Infos des Labels keine Auskunft.

Ein Knaller ist auch der Titeltrack „Total War“ -. Hier steigt Sängerin Kirsten gleich im Cheerleader-Style ein und mixt Hip Hop – Attitüden mit fettem Metal. Während ich den Track „Hello Darkness“ anhöre, realisiere ich, dass die Stimme Ähnlichkeit mit einer der besten Metalstimmen hat. Besonders in den treibenden Phasenmit hohem Druck klingt Kirsten ähnlich wie ANNA MURPHY von CELLAR DARLING (Ex-ELUVEITIE).
Dieses treibende, druckvolle Gesamtbild macht für mich das Album stark, sehr stark und ich hoffe, dass ich diesen Eindruck baldmöglichst live verifizieren kann.

Fazit

Eine fantastische Sängerin unterstützt durch technisch hochstehende Musiker, die einen druckvollen, kompakten Metalsound mit Death Metal – Elementen fabrizieren – das rPojekt muss unterstützt werden. Darum – kaufen!

When smaller labels take great bands on board, it’s always a bit difficult to get them into concerts and festivals. Unfortunately, quality is not the top priority for bookers. However, MY MERRY MACHINE have definitely found a home with a label that works closely with the artists, has a family atmosphere and is highly committed to its work. It is to be hoped that the label and the band will attract the attention of promoters and bookers.

Although „Total War“ is MY MERRY MACHINE’s debut album, they are only newcomers to a limited extent. The band shares singer Kirsten Zahn-Massing with goth-metallers BLOODFLOWERZ. MY MERRY MACHINE has also been around since 2018 and is joined by Markus Visser on guitars and bass and Tim Schwarz on drums. Let’s get ahead of ourselves – the band is one of those trios that can really pack a punch even with just a few members. However, I imagine that they will be joined live by a guest on bass – bass and guitar together is quite a challenge.

But let’s move away from key personnel data and focus on the album, the music. The press releases talk about heavy metal, I would add melodic death to that, even if there are only some growls.
What is immediately noticeable from the very first track; the band really pushes the envelope, kicking off with fat drums and bass, then adding crunchy riffing – and then opening up the stage for singer Kirsten. And sorry guys, she really is the front woman, the band’s unique selling point. On the one hand, you can hear her experience – her voice is clear and technically perfect, and charismatic at the same time. She also meanders skilfully between clear vocals, screams and growls. This makes the start of the album a deal with the devil. The label’s information does not reveal whether they have already sold their souls.
The titletrack „Total War“ is also a banger. Singer Kirsten starts off in cheerleader style and mixes hip hop attitudes with heavy metal. While listening to the track „Hello Darkness“, I realise that her voice is similar to one of the best metal voices. Especially in the driving phases with high pressure, Kirsten sounds similar to ANNA MURPHY from CELLAR DARLING (ex-ELUVEITIE).
This driving, powerful overall picture makes the album strong for me, very strong and I hope that I can verify this impression live as soon as possible.

Conclusion

A fantastic singer supported by technically outstanding musicians who produce a powerful, compact metal sound with death metal elements – the rPojekt must be supported. Therefore – buy it!
