SKUNK ANANSIE – „The Painful Truth“

Ja, es gibt die Songs, die man problemlos in die Pop-Mainstream-Ecke stellen kann. In dieser Ecke stünden dann aber auch viele weitere Bands, die sich dem Rock verschrieben haben. „Lost And Found“ ist ein solches Beispiel. Gleich anschliessend kommt mit „Cheers“ ein Track, den wir so eher kennen. Sängerin Skin lässt hier ihre eindrückliche und für den Bandsound so typische Stimme vom Stapel. So sollen SKUNK ANANSIE klingen und so klingen sie auch.
Ein Brett vor dem Herrn ist dann „Shoulda Been You“. Mit einer Reggae-Grundstimmung verknüpfen sie dann typische Alternative-Riffwände und entziehen sich damit erneut der klaren Zuordnung. Ich stelle mir gerade vor, wie diese Nummer live abgeht, wie das Wasser an den Wänden der Clubs runterläuft oder wie die Ekstase in einer Festivalcrowd um sich grieft.
Im Übrigen gilt für alle Tracks auf dem Album – es wird viel ausserhalb des Rockuniversums gefischt, letztlich geht aber alles straight forward. „An Artist Is An Artist“ transportiert den klassischen Punk in die heutige Zeit – musikalisch angereichert mit viel Technik und Elektronik – was damals beinahe undenkbar war. Und trotzdem, die rohe Kraft des Punk ist auch hier Teil der Geschichte.
Fazit
Was soll ich sagen. Es ist die nach wie vor starke Präsenz von Sängerin Skin, ihr stimmliches Charisma, das mich packt. Gleichzeitig ist da diese Band, technisch perfekt und sehr variabel – die Jungs können alles spielen. Der unbeschwerte und fast zufällig wirkende Mix verschiedener Genreelemente macht das Album frisch, unterwirft es aber dem gewohnten Druck der Band. SKUNK ANANSIE ist SKUNK ANANSIE ist SKUNK ANANSIE – basta! Ach ja, Kaufempfehlung versteht sich eh von selbst.

Will ROCKNEWS review Popbands? Shurely not!
Because SKUNK ANANSIE are definitely not a pop band. The group certainly meanders between all kinds of genre attitudes, but anyone who has seen them live knows that they would outshine many established rock bands. We’ve known that since ‘Weak,’ by the way.
If you want to check them out, you’ll have the chance at the PALEO Festival in August. And anyone who was at X-TRA in March already knows…
Now their new album ‘The Painful Truth’ is out, hitting you with a concentrated dose of alternative rock with the usual pinch of punk – and a little pop too – or something like that.
Yes, there are songs that could easily be classified as mainstream pop. But then there are many other bands in that category who are committed to rock. ‘Lost And Found’ is one such example. It is immediately followed by “Cheers”, a track that we are more familiar with. Singer Skin lets her impressive voice, which is so typical of the band’s sound, ring out. This is how SKUNK ANANSIE should sound, and this is how they sound.
‘Shoulda Been You’ is a real showstopper. With a reggae vibe, they combine typical alternative riff walls and once again defy clear categorisation. I can just imagine how this song goes down live, how the water runs down the walls of the clubs or how the ecstasy spreads through a festival crowd.
Incidentally, the same applies to all the tracks on the album – they fish a lot outside the rock universe, but ultimately everything is straight forward. ‘An Artist Is An Artist’ transports classic punk into the present day – musically enriched with a lot of technology and electronics – which was almost unthinkable back then. And yet, the raw power of punk is also part of the story here.
Conclusion
What can I say? It’s the continued strong presence of singer Skin and her vocal charisma that grabs me. At the same time, there’s this band, technically perfect and very versatile – these guys can play anything. The carefree and almost random mix of different genre elements makes the album fresh, but subjects it to the band’s usual pressure. SKUNK ANANSIE is SKUNK ANANSIE is SKUNK ANANSIE – that’s it! Oh yes, and of course I recommend buying it.
