Besser spät als nie – FEUERSCHWANZ mit „Warriors“
Der Titel bezieht sich darauf, dass ich wieder einmal einen release verpennt habe. Man könnte das aber auch so verstehen, dass die Bnad „endlich“ einmal englisch singt. Aber – taugt das was?

FEUERSCHWANZ gehören bei vielen Sommerfestivals schon beinahe zum Inventar. Dieses Jahr werden sie in der Schweiz am GREENFIELD spielen, ebenfalls am SUMMERBREEZE, NOVA ROCK und WACKEN – und einigen weiteren Freiluftveranstaltungen. Wenn ich mit Leuten über FEUERSCHWANZ spreche, dann höre ich fast nur Begeisterung oder Ablehnung, schwarz oder weiss, kaum Grautöne. Die Truppe scheint zu polarisieren, und mit ihrem neuen Album giessen sie erneut Feuer ins Öl – oder eher umgekehrt? FEUERSCHWANZ veröffentlichen erstmals ein Album in Englisch.
Bei den Gästen haben sich die Süddeutschen nicht lumpen lassen, die klingenden Namen sind ORDEN OGAN, Chris Harms (LOTL), DOMINUM, Patty Gurdy sowie Francesco Cavalieri von WIND ROSE.
Musikalisch gibt es „nicht viel Neues“, weil die meisten Tracks bereits bekannt sind und „lediglich“ übersetzt und remastered wurden. Immerhin gibt es einen neuen Track „Unholy Grail“ sowie das Cover „Valhalla Calling“ aus „Assassins Creed“.
Was also ändert sich dadurch, dass Songs in neuer Sprache einfliegen? Sie wirken anders, irgendwie fällt die sarkastische Attitüde der „Met-Metaller“ weg, die Tracks rücken stärker in Richtung von POWERWOLF, ohne deren Langeweile zu kopieren (jepp, meine persönliche Meinung). Ich – wiederum persönlich – hätte mir bei „Memento Mori“ ja auch einen anderen Gastsänger – oder eine Sängerin – vorstellen. Ich geb’s zu, ich halte den LOTL-Fronter für nicht halb so gut, wie der aktuelle Hype es darstellt. Die ESC-Teilnahme ist für mich definitiv keine Adelung.
Aber zurück zum Album; ich finde, es steht den Recken gut, sich in die anderssprachigen Gefilde zu wagen. „The Unholy Grail“ wirkt anders, frisch, neu – es spielt eine Rolle, ob ein Track direkt in englisch geschrieben wird. Es ist nicht der absolute Burner, aber ein Song, der nicht abfällt. Und das Cover „Valhalla Calling“ haben sie gut umgesetzt, nicht einfach nachgespielt, sondern mit FEUERSCHWANZ-Ingredienzien neu gewürzt, der Mittelaltertouch passt.
Fazit
Nein, das beste FEUERSCHWANZ ist „Warriors“ nicht, ihr Mittelaltermetal ist in deutsch authentischer, ihre Ironie kommt da besser durch. Nichtsdestotrotz kann das ALbum als Türöffner für Fans des SOunds dienen, die sich bisher mit den deutschen Texten schwer getan haben – schliesslich ist es einfacher, sich nur auf die Musik zu konzentrieren, wenn man die Texte nicht versteht. Kaufen? Darf man, ist ein nettes Geschenk zum zwanzigsten Geburtstag der Mannen.

FEUERSCHWANZ are almost a fixture at many summer festivals. This year they will be playing at GREENFIELD in Switzerland, as well as at SUMMERBREEZE, NOVA ROCK and WACKEN – and several other open-air events. When I talk to people about FEUERSCHWANZ, I almost only hear enthusiasm or rejection, black or white, hardly any shades of grey. The band seems to polarise, and with their new album they are once again adding fuel to the fire – or is it the other way round? FEUERSCHWANZ are releasing an album in English for the first time.
The South Germans have gone to great lengths when it comes to guests, with ORDEN OGAN, Chris Harms (LOTL), DOMINUM, Patty Gurdy and Francesco Cavalieri from WIND ROSE among the big names.
Musically, there is „not much new“ because most of the tracks are already known and have „merely“ been translated and remastered. At least there is a new track „Unholy Grail“ and the cover „Valhalla Calling“ from „Assassins Creed“.
So what has changed because the songs are in a new language? They seem different, somehow the sarcastic attitude of the „met-metallers“ is gone, the tracks move more in the direction of POWERWOLF without copying their boredom (yep, my personal opinion). I – again personally – could have imagined a different guest singer – or a female singer – on „Memento Mori“. I admit it, I don’t think the LOTL frontman is half as good as the current hype makes him out to be. Participating in the ESC is definitely not an honour for me.
But back to the album; I think it suits the warriors to venture into the other language realms. „The Unholy Grail“ seems different, fresh, new – it matters whether a track is written directly in English. It’s not an absolute burner, but it’s a song that doesn’t fall flat. And the cover „Valhalla Calling“ has been realised well, not simply imitated, but spiced up with FEUERSCHWANZ ingredients, the medieval touch fits.
Conclusion
No, „Warriors“ is not the best FEUERSCHWANZ, their medieval metal is more authentic in German, their irony comes through better. Nonetheless, the album can serve as a door opener for fans of the sound who have previously struggled with the German lyrics – after all, it’s easier to just concentrate on the music if you don’t understand the lyrics. Buy it? You can, it’s a nice present for the band’s twentieth birthday.
