FROM ASHES TO NEW stammen aus Lancaster, Pennsylvania und bestehen aus Matt Brandyberry (Gesang), Danny Case (Gesang), Lance Dowdle (Gitarre) und Mat Madiro (Schlagzeug). Das kommende Album „Blackout“ beschreibt das Leid einer prä-apokalyptischen Welt und spiegelt die Gemütslage wider, in der sich die Welt während der Pandemie 2020 befand, in der das Album geschrieben wurde. Es markiert eine Rückkehr zu den Wurzeln von FROM ASHES TO NEW und interpretiert den Sound der Band neu.
Mich erinnert der Sound der Band stark an WE CAME AS ROMANS – was ein Qualitätsattribut ist. Um auf die Frage oben zurückzukommen; schaffen es die Amis, mit diesem Album Genregrenzen zu sprengen?
Metalcore zu spielen, ist an sich bereits ein Sprengen von Genregrenzen. Die Verbindung von Metal mit Hip Hop, mit Rockelementen, der Verbindung von clearen und growlenden Stimmen, gleichzeitig eine starke, oft mehrstimmige Melodik im Gesang erweitert a priori die einzelnen Genreelemente. Um sich hier abzuheben, Qualität zu bringen, müssen Bands zwei Dinge schaffen; erstens dürfen es keine Versatzstücke sein, die zu Tracks zusammengeführt werden. Der Sound muss vielmehr rund sein, in sich stimmig und quasi logisch. Und zweitens darf das Ganze nicht kompliziert werden, verkrampft oder künstlich.
Das ist gar nicht einfach, da Metalcore sich seinen Platz in der Metalszene längst gesichert hat. Es gibt seit Jahren eine Unmenge an guten Bands in diesem Karpfenteich, richtig guten. Und längst gehören diese Kapellen zu den Lineups sämtlicher Metalfestivals, generieren dort ebenfalls ein neues, jüngeres Publikum.
FROM ASHES TO NEW machen einen guten Job, das Album ist vielfältig und setzt sich textlich tiefgründig mit den vielen Facetten des Lebens auseinander – insbesondere den Herausforderungen während der Pandemie. Der Sound ist kompakt, technisch perfekt, das Songwriting und die Kompositionen sind stimmig. „Blackout“ ist ein gutes Metalcore-Album, das ich in der vorderen Hälfte platzieren würde. Für einen Platz ganz weit oben, nahe beim Metalcore-Thron, dafür ist das Album nicht gut genug. Mir persönlich gefallen die Rap-Parts etwa bei „Dead To Me“ sehr gut, andere Tracks haben gute Power, viel Druck. Auch der Track „Haertache“ hat etwas – fast etwas Eminem im Metalrausch. Aber insgesamt überzeugt mich die Scheibe nur teilweise, das ALbum hebt sich kaum von dem ab, was viele MC-Bands liefern. Es gibt nichts, was das Album aus dem Mittelmass des Genres heraushebt. Für einmal ist der Karpfenteich einfach zu gross, zu gut bestückt.
Fazit
„Blackout“ ist ein gutes Album, es wird viele Fans begeistern, Platz in mancher Metalcore-Sammlung finden. In meiner Sammlung wird es keinen besonderen Stellenwert bekommen – das ist allerdings bei knapp 4’000 Scheiben der verschiedensten Genres auch ziemlich schwierig.

FROM ASHES TO NEW hails from Lancaster, Pennsylvania and consists of Matt Brandyberry (vocals), Danny Case (vocals), Lance Dowdle (guitar) and Mat Madiro (drums). The upcoming album „Blackout“ describes the suffering of a pre-apocalyptic world and reflects the state of mind the world was in during the 2020 pandemic in which the album was written. It marks a return to FROM ASHES TO NEW’s roots and reinterprets the band’s sound.
To me, the band’s sound reminds me a lot of WE CAME AS ROMANS – which is a quality attribute. Coming back to the question above; do the Yanks manage to break genre boundaries with this album?
Playing metalcore is in itself already a blasting of genre boundaries. The combination of metal with hip hop, with rock elements, the combination of clear and growling voices, at the same time a strong, often polyphonic melody in the vocals expands a priori the individual genre elements. To stand out here, to bring quality, bands must create two things; first, it must not be set pieces that are combined into tracks. The sound must be round, coherent and quasi logical. And secondly, the whole thing must not become complicated, cramped or artificial.
This is not easy at all, since metalcore has long since secured its place in the metal scene. There have been a lot of good bands in this carp pond for years, really good ones. And these bands have long been part of the lineups of all metal festivals, generating a new, younger audience there as well.
FROM ASHES TO NEW do a good job, the album is diverse and lyrically deals profoundly with the many facets of life – especially the challenges during the pandemic. The sound is compact, technically perfect, the songwriting and compositions are coherent. „Blackout“ is a good metalcore album that I would place in the front half. For a place at the top, close to the metalcore throne, the album is not good enough for that. Personally I like the rap parts very much for example in „Dead To Me“, other tracks have good power, a lot of pressure. Also the track „Haertache“ has something – almost something Eminem in the metal rush. But overall the disc only partially convinces me, the ALbum hardly stands out from what many MC bands deliver. There is nothing that lifts the album out of the mediocrity of the genre. For once, the carp pond is just too big, too well stocked.
Conclusion
„Blackout“ is a good album, it will delight many fans, find place in many a metalcore collection. In my collection it will not get a special place – but that is quite difficult with almost 4’000 discs of different genres.
