Nach ihrem Debut „Darkness Will Rise“ aus dem Jahr 2017 und dem 2019 erschienenen „Conspiracy“ legen die Jungs jetzt ihr drittes Werk auf – die Band ist definitiv erwachsen geworden.

THE RAVEN AGE sind das, was man Senkrechtstarter nennt. Die Briten gehen ab wie Zäpfchen, spielen grosse Festivals wie das HELLFEST, WACKEN, NOVA ROCK oder das DOWNLOAD und supporten Bands wie VOLBEAT, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, SHINEDOWN oder ALTER BRIDGE.
Soll ich mein Fazit vorab klären? Das Album lohnt sich, ist jeden Cent wert. Und eines gleich vorweg – Gitarrist George Harris hat sich nie über seinen Vater definiert und auch beim neuesten Album spielt es keine Rolle, dass Steve Harris als Basser bei IRON MAIDEN arbeitet. Diese Band geht ihren Weg, weil sie musikalisch stark sind, ihre Instrumente grandios beherrschen und wissen, was Komposition und Songwriting ist und wie es zum Funktionieren kommt.
Die Jungs spielen astreinen Metal, reife Bretter wechseln sich ab mit sehr melodischen Tracks. Zentralestes Element sich für mich die beiden Gitarristen George Harris und Tony Maue. Nicht, dass etwa der Gesang von Matt James oder Basser Matt Cox abfallen würde, ich finde die Saitenarbeit bei dieser Band einfach genial, kompakt, kreativ, knackig! Gleichzeitig haben sie mit Basser Cox und Drummer Jai Patel ein mehr als ausreichend stabiles Fundament.
Wer die Band schon live gesehen hat weiss, dass sie eine absolute Abbruchinstanz sind – da bleibt kein Auge trocken, da gehen Stadien und Bühnen in Rauch auf, da pullern Double Blasts den Rasen weg – die Jungs können es einfach.
Damit ihr drittes Album auch die nötige Zuwendung erhält, hat die Band am richtigen Ort investiert; sie holten sich die Hilfe des langjährigen Produzenten Matt Hyde (SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE), um den Grundstein für das Album zu legen, bevor sie das restliche Material anschliessend selbst aufnahmen. Das finale Mastering wurde in die fähigen Hände von Mika Jussila in den Finnvox Studios (NIGHTWISH, CHILDREN OF BODOM, HIM) gelegt.
Gibt es sowas wie Anspieltipps? Nope, die finde ich nämlich nur auf Alben, die Tracks integriert haben, die hervorstechen oder abfallen. Und hier ist die Qualität von Track 1 bis 9 gleichbleibend, gleichbleibend hoch.
Wenn ich dennoch Songs direkt benennen müsste, wären das wahrscheinlich „The Journey“ als Beispiel für den Umgang der Jungs mit Melodie und sanfteren Passagen sowie „War In Heaven“, ein Brett vor dem Herrn mit der angetönten Gitarrenarbeit – vom Feinsten!
Fazit
Wie bereits gesagt – holt euch die Scheibe, knallt sie in euren digitalen oder analogen Player, dreht der Regler auf zwölf und feiert die Jungs ab – „Blood Omen“ ist bisher definitiv eines der besten Metal-Alben im laufenden Jahr.

THE RAVEN AGE are what you call high-flyers. The Brits are going off like cones, play big festivals like HELLFEST, WACKEN, NOVA ROCK or DOWNLOAD and support bands like VOLBEAT, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, SHINEDOWN or ALTER BRIDGE.
Should I clarify my conclusion in advance? The album is worth it, worth every cent. And one thing right away – guitarist George Harris has never defined himself by his father and also on the latest album it doesn’t matter that Steve Harris works as a bass player for IRON MAIDEN. This band goes their way because they are musically strong, have a terrific command of their instruments and know what composition and songwriting is and how to make it work.
The guys play straight metal, mature boards alternate with very melodic tracks. The most central element for me are the two guitarists George Harris and Tony Maue. Not that the vocals of Matt James or bassist Matt Cox would fall off, I find the string work in this band simply brilliant, compact, creative, crisp! At the same time, with bassist Cox and drummer Jai Patel, they have a more than sufficiently stable foundation.
Who has already seen the band live knows that they are an absolute wrecking ball – there is not a dry eye in the house, stadiums and stages go up in smoke, double blasts pull the lawn away – the guys can simply do it.
To ensure that their third album gets the attention it deserves, the band invested in the right place; they enlisted the help of longtime producer Matt Hyde (SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE) to lay the foundation for the album before subsequently recording the rest of the material themselves. The final mastering was placed in the capable hands of Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios (NIGHTWISH, CHILDREN OF BODOM, HIM).
Are there any tips for playing? Nope, I only find them on albums that have integrated tracks that stand out or fall off. And here the quality from track 1 to 9 is consistently, consistently high.
If I still had to name songs directly, it would probably be „The Journey“ as an example of the guys‘ handling of melody and softer passages, as well as „War In Heaven“, a board in front of the Lord with the guitar work touched on – at its finest!
Conclusion
As already said – get the disc, pop it into your digital or analog player, turn the knob to twelve and celebrate the guys – „Blood Omen“ is definitely one of the best metal albums of the current year so far.
