WOLFPAKK – wie geil ist das denn?
Manchmal könnte ich mich ohrfeigen, weil ich Dinge einfach übersehe – wie beim Release des fünften WOLFPAKK – Albums „Nature Strikes Back“.

Heavy Metal aus der Schweiz mit 32 Gastmusikern zuhause bei Massacre Records.
Das Album ist seit dem 24. Januar auf dem Markt und ich hab es erst vor einer guten Woche wieder hervorgeholt – Corona sei Dank!
Eigentlich sind mir WOLFPAKK als Projekt von Mark Sweeney und Michael Voss ja ein Begriff, aber das Beispiel zeigt, dass die Promoberge sich hoch auftürmen und manchmal Perlen unter sich begraben. Womit das schon einmal vorweggenommen wäre – da Album ist der Hammer und ein Muss für eine einigermassen ernstzunehmende Musiksammlung.
Ich könnte hier eine überlange Review schreiben allein damit, dass ich auf die Liste der Gäste eingehe – wie zum Teufel schafft man es, 32 Gastmusiker unterzubringen? Liste gefällig?

Zur Musik? Beim allerersten Anhören ging mir durch den Kopf, dass das irgendwie wie DRAGONFORCE ohne Saitenmasturbation klingt. Das hat sich dann schnell gewandelt – das klingt massiv besser als DRAGONFORCE.
Es ist zwar fast logisch, dass ein Album mit diesen Musikern technisch perfekt sein wird und musikalisch abwechslungsreich und auf hohem Niveau. Aber – es müssen nichtsdestotrotz gute Songs geschrieben, spannende Arrangements aufgebaut werden. Und da haben die Herren Sweeney und Voss ihre Hausaufgaben mehr als gemacht – Mittelmaß oder schlechte Songs gibt es nicht. Klar, es sind nicht alles solche Überhämmer sind wie etwa „Nature Strikes Back“ oder „The Legend“. Aber auch Tracks wie „Land Of Wolves“ oder „Restore Your Soul“ passen zur aufgefahrenen Musikantenüberdosis wie eine zweite Haut.
Sweeney und Voss haben es geschafft, nicht nur eine Menge Freunde zusammenzubringen, sondern ihnen die Songs so auf den Leib zu schreiben, dass auch die Stimmungen der verschiedenen Bands ein Stück weit eingefangen wurden. Mein Favorit ist „The Legend“ – was Sweeney und Voss hier gemeinsam mit BEAST IN BLACK Fronter Papadopoulos abliefern, ist einfach ganz grosses Kino. So klingt eine Heavy Metal Hymne erster Klasse, ein Überhammer.
Neben dem Titeltrack und dem erwähnten „The Legend“ hat es mir auch die Ballade „Land Of Wolves“ angetan. Ja, man kann mich mit guten, mehrstimmigen Gesangsparts angeln – schliesslich bin auch ich einmal Chorknabe gewesen. Aber schliesslich spielen hier auch Bruce Kulick und Michael Voss die Saiten und stellen klar, dass sie immer regelmässig geübt haben und nicht vollständig untalentiert sind. Spitze!
Und dann ist da ja noch der Track, der einerseits wieder eine schöne Gesangslinie bietet, bei dem mir aber nach den ersten beiden Takten klar war, wer hier mitmischt – selbstverständlich kein Geringerer als ANNIHILATOR – Jeff Waters. „Revolution“ hat definitiv das Zeug zum Livekracher.
Wobei das ja der einzige Nachteil am WOLFPAKK ist – wir werden diese Truppe nie live sehen.
Fazit
„Nature Strikes Back“ ist das beste Heavy Metal Album, das ich dieses Jahr auf meine Ohren gekriegt habe und ich glaube nicht, dass es noch gestoppt werden wird.

The album has been on the market since January 24th and I only brought it out a good week ago – thanks to Corona!
Actually I know WOLFPAKK as a project of Mark Sweeney and Michael Voss, but the example shows that the mountains of promoters pile up high and sometimes bury pearls underneath them. Which is to say that the album is the hammer and a must for a serious music collection.
I could write an overlong review here just by adding to the list of guests – how the hell do you manage to accommodate 32 guest musicians? Want a list?
To music? When I first listened to it for the very first time, it went through my mind that it somehow sounds like DRAGONFORCE without string masturbation. That changed quickly – it sounds massively better than DRAGONFORCE.
It’s almost logical that an album with these musicians will be technically perfect and musically varied and on a high level. But – nevertheless, good songs have to be written, exciting arrangements have to be built up. And there Mr. Sweeney and Mr. Voss have more than done their homework – there is no such thing as mediocrity or bad songs. Sure, they are not all such hammers like „Nature Strikes Back“ or „The Legend“. But also tracks like „Land Of Wolves“ or „Restore Your Soul“ fit to the overdose of musicians like a second skin.
Sweeney and Voss not only managed to bring a lot of friends together, but also to write the songs so that the moods of the different bands were captured to a certain extent. My favourite is „The Legend“ – what Sweeney and Voss are doing here together with BEAST IN BLACK Fronter Papadopoulos is simply great cinema. That’s the sound of a first class heavy metal anthem, a smash hit.
Besides the title track and the mentioned „The Legend“ I also liked the ballad „Land Of Wolves“. Yes, you can catch me with good, polyphonic vocal parts – after all, I was once a choirboy too. But finally Bruce Kulick and Michael Voss also play the strings here and make it clear that they have always practiced regularly and are not completely untalented. Great!
And then there’s the track, which on the one hand offers a nice vocal line again, but where I knew after the first two bars, who was involved – of course no one less than ANNIHILATOR – Jeff Waters. „Revolution“ definitely has what it takes to be a live hit.
But that’s the only disadvantage of WOLFPAKK – we will never see this band live.
Conclusion
„Nature Strikes Back“ is the best heavy metal album I’ve gotten to hear this year and I don’t think it will be stopped.
„Heavy beats, awesome voices and brilliant guitars – that’s WOLFPAKK!“
