Als ich vergangenen Sommer den Frontmann Michael Poulsen am Greenfield vors Mikrofon bekam erzählte ich ihm, dass ich VOLBEAT für die härteste Partyband der Welt halten würde. Er lachte im ersten Moment und fühlte sich anschliessend geschmeichelt. „Wenn die Leute bei uns Party machen können, ist das eine wunderbare Sache.“
Poulsen singt und spielt Gitarre, Rob Caggiano wechselte nach vielen Jahren bei ANTHRAX 2013 zu VOLBEAT, Kaspar Boye Larsen zupft den Bass und Jon Larsen haut zielgenau und präzise auf die Kübel.
Seit 2001 ist die Truppe mittlerweile unterwegs und hangelt sich von Erfolg zu Erfolg. VOLBEAT können es sich schon längst leisten, genau ihr Ding durchzuziehen.
Zahlen und Fakten gefällig? VOLBEAT waren schon mit MOTÖRHEAD auf Tour, mit SLIPKNOT und METALLICA, sie haben mittlerweile 1,5 Milliarden Streams, wurden 2014 für den Grammy nominiert und haben einen ECHO gewonnen.
Aber was ist das Wichtigste für eine Band, die so viel Erfolg hat, was macht VOLBEAT aus? „Da ist immer noch dieser Hunger, dieses Verlangen nach neuer Musik, neuen Texten. Das hört auch nicht auf, wenn die Inspiration stimmt, und wenn man hinterher zufrieden mit den Resultaten ist… „ meint Poulsen. Nach dem Interview mit dem ausgesprochen sympathischen Familienmenschen glaube ich ihm das aufs Wort.
Das Album „Rewind – Replay – Rebound“ trägt einen etwas verfänglichen Titel. Etwas zurückspulen und dann nochmals abzuspielen wird nicht gerade als kreativer Akt verstanden und kann in Bezug auf ein neues Album eher kontraproduktiv sein.
Poulsen erklärt den Titel des Albums so:
„Die Texte transportieren einen zurück in die Vergangenheit, in die eigene Kindheit, man hebt also ab und ist plötzlich wieder klein, tut das, was man damals getan hat“, holt Poulsen aus und bezieht sich auf das „Rewind“ im Titel. „Später dann wiederholt man alles noch mal, betrachtet alles noch mal aus der Zukunft. Und wenn man etwas durchstanden hat, vollkommen am Ende war, aber sich wieder aufgerappelt hat und sogar gestärkt zurückgekommen ist, dann ist das wie ein Abprallen, ein Wieder-auf-die-Füße-Kommen – das ist der ‘Rebound’.
Wenn eine Band einen derart einprägsamen Sound spielt und für diesen Sound steht, ist es bestimmt schwierig, sich laufend neu zu erfinden, immer wieder etwas anders zu machen. Letztlich ist das auch gar nicht erwünscht, denn schliesslich hat die Band Millionen Fans, die sie eben gerade wegen ihres Sounds lieben. Angesagt wäre also, die Marke VOLBEAT zu erhalten und ihr ein paar Spritzer frischer Musikalität zu bewilligen. Also nicht viel Neues aus Dänemark?
Ich finde schon. Insgesamt ist „Rewind – Replay – Rebound“ ein „richtiges“ VOLBEAT-Album, es bringt viel vom charakteristischen, melodischen Sound, die beiden typischen Gitarrensounds, Poulsens Stimme – alles, was des Fans Herz begehrt.
Und doch ist da mehr, teilweise deutlich mehr. „Pelvis On Fire“ beispielsweise kündigt sich als fettes Metalbrett an, tief gestimmte Gitarren, Bass und Drums wuchtig. Plötzlich aber kippt es in einen jener rockabilly-angehauchtern Tracks, die VOLBEAT so bekannt gemacht haben. Trotz dieser Verspieltheit bleibt der Song von Anfang bis Ende druckvoll, läuft schliesslich als ziemlich fette Riffwand aus. Manche Leute weigern sich, VOLBEAT als Metal zu bezeichnen – ich kenne manche bekannten Metalbands, die nciht halb soviel Power auf die Brretter legen.
Dann wäre da noch jener Track, der seit einiger Zeit in den Radios rauf und runter läuft – zumindest bei ROCKANTENNE und Konsorten; „Leviathan“. Ja, richtig, der Song hat genau jene Ingredienzen, die Poulsen und VOLBEAT ausmachen – und trotzdem ist es ein Track, dessen Hookline du nicht mehr aus der Birne kriegst, wenn sie sich da einmal festgesetzt hat. Und das macht sie schnell, präzise, spätestens bei zweiten Hören.
Guten alten Rock’n’Roll haben die Jungs auch noch drauf; das zeigen die Jungs bei „Die To Life“ mehr als eindrücklich. Ich höre bereits die Stadien auseinanderbrechen, wenn die Fanbase von VOLBEAT hier ausrastet.
Richtig cool finde ich auch den Track „7:24“, für einmal weniger wegen seiner musikalischen Qualität, sondern vielmehr wegen seiner Geschichte. Der Track steht nämlich für den Zeitpunkt von Poulsens Tochter, welche vor zwei Jahren zur Welt kam. Eine schöne Liebeserklärung an seine erste Tochter, gekrönt durch eine Melodie, welche so nur von MIchael Poulsen kommen kann, diese leicht melancholische Stimme, die immer etwas so klingt, als wäre sie einAusruf, ein Flehen nach Etwas. Kann ein Vater etwas Schöneres für sein Kind singen als „the things that you say, can make my day“.
Fazit
Jaja, „Rewind – Replay – Rebound“ ist VOLBEAT, klingt nach VOLBEAT, schmeckt nach VOLBEAT. Die Fans werden es lieben, einige Kritiker werden es verreissen. Sie werden schreiben, dass es zu poppig wäre, zu sehr Mainstream.
Scheiss drauf; Mainstream ist nur ein Schimpfwort, wenn man Jemand den Erfolg nicht gönnen mag oder es verwerflich findet, wenn eine Band oder ein Musiker wahnsinnig viele Fans hat und anständig Geld verdient.
Für mich haben VOLBEAT hier ein grandioses Album abgeliefert, Musik, die Spass macht, Texte, welche sich mit verschiedenen Facetten des Lebens auseinandersetzen, Songs, die abwechslungsreich sind und immer wieder mit feinen Nuancen und unerwarteten Wendungen aufwarten.

The album „Rewind – Replay – Rebound“ has a somewhat catchy title. Rewinding and replaying is not exactly seen as a creative act and can be counterproductive for a new album.
Poulsen explains the title of the album as follows:
„The lyrics transport you back to the past, to your own childhood, so you take off and suddenly you’re small again, you do what you did back then“, Poulsen and refers to the „rewind“ in the title. „Later you repeat everything again, look at everything again from the future. And if you’ve been through something, was completely at the end, but got up again and even came back strengthened, then it’s like a rebound, a return to your feet – that’s the ‚rebound‘.
When a band plays such a memorable sound and stands for this sound, it is certainly difficult to reinvent oneself, to do something different again and again. After all, the band has millions of fans who love them just because of their sound. So it would be a good idea to keep the brand VOLBEAT and grant it a few splashes of fresh musicality. So not much news from Denmark?
I think so. Altogether „Rewind – Replay – Rebound“ is a „real“ VOLBEAT-album, it brings much of the characteristic, melodic sound, the two typical guitar sounds, Poulsens voice – everything what the fan’s heart desires.
And yet there is more, partly clearly more. „Pelvis On Fire“ for example announces itself as a fat metal board, deeply tuned guitars, bass and drums massive. But suddenly it tips over into one of those rockabilly-inspired tracks that made VOLBEAT so famous. Despite this playfulness, the song remains powerful from beginning to end, finally ending up as a pretty fat riff wall. Some people refuse to call VOLBEAT metal – I know some well known metal bands who don’t put half as much power on the bricks.
Then there’s the track that’s been running up and down the radios for some time now – at least on ROCKANTENNE and their like; „Leviathan“. Yes, right, the song has exactly those ingredients that make up Poulsen and VOLBEAT – and yet it’s a track whose hookline you can’t get out of your head once it’s settled there. And that makes them fast, precise, at the latest on second hearing.
The guys also have good old Rock’n’Roll; the guys on „Die To Life“ show that more than impressively. I can already hear the stadiums breaking apart when the fanbase of VOLBEAT is freaking out here.
I also think the track „7:24“ is really cool, for once less because of its musical quality, but rather because of its history. The track stands for the time of Poulsen’s daughter, who was born two years ago. A beautiful declaration of love to his first daughter, crowned by a melody, which can only come from MIchael Poulsen, this slightly melancholic voice, which always sounds a bit like an exclamation, a plea for something. Can a father sing something more beautiful for his child than „the things that you say, can make my day“.
Conclusion
Yes, , „Rewind – Replay – Rebound“ is VOLBEAT, sounds like VOLBEAT, tastes like VOLBEAT. The fans will love it, some critics will tear it apart. They’ll write that it would be too poppy, too much mainstream.
shit on it; mainstream is just a dirty word if you don’t like someone’s success or if you find it reprehensible that a band or a musician has a lot of fans and earns decent money.
For me VOLBEAT have delivered a great album here, music that is fun, lyrics that deal with different facets of life, songs that are varied and always come up with fine nuances and unexpected twists.
