VANDEN PLAS – „The Ghost Xperiment-Awakening“

Fazit

Progressive Metal from Germany at home at Frontiers Records

deutsche Version below

The German Prog-Metallers of VANDEN PLAS are one of the most underrated bands of their genre for me. While Andy Kuntz (vocals), Stephan Lill (guitars), Andreas Lill (drums), Günter Werno (keyboards) and Torsten Reichert (bass), for example, fill stadiums in France, they are not very noticed in German-speaking countries.
I can’t understand that, as the band has been doing more than average metal sound since 1986. The guys master their instruments as well as creative songwriting and manage to write songs that remain exciting and impressive even after nine minutes.

The current album „The Ghost Xperience“ was released on October 11th and is disc number 12, if you don’t count the compilation „The Epic Works 1991 – 2015“, a boxset with all 11 previous albums.
Klar, the guys are epic, the music is not just for simple headbanging. After all, ProgMetal is something like the jazz of metal. Sound paintings and sound cascades are in demand. The dynamics have to be high, from quiet passages to breakers that wash the listeners away.
These conditions are perfectly fulfilled by „Devil’s Poetry“, one of the strongest tracks on the album.
Also a cool, interesting number is „Fall From The Skies“, which announces itself quietly and ballad-like. After about one and a half minutes the guys are going to give you gas, hammering drums, a driving bass and howling six strings flying around your ears. But it’s not as if it would just go on fat and fat, the song is an ongoing change of rather calm passages and driving passages.
The charismatic voice of Andy Kuntz carries everything. It reminds me at times of Tobias Sammet, but is a bit „dirtier“, more intense. Kuntz is certainly one of the best singers in the German-speaking world.

Conclusion

What can you say about the album as a whole? Demanding music perhaps, cleanly arranged sound worlds with a lot of humming? Or just a piece of the best German steel with a sparkling surface? That sounds good, I’ll leave that as it is. And who can’t understand it – buy a disc and listen up and down!
