At the Heart of Wintervale“.

„At the Heart of Wintervale“ ist kein schlechtes Album – aber eben auch kein wirklich gutes.

english version

Once again, the Swedish unicorn metallers TWILIGHT FORCE unleash an album on their fans. Straight out of the fairy world are singer Allyon, guitarist Lynd, bassist Born, Blackwald as narrator and keyboardist, De’Azsh on drums and finally Aerendir also on guitars.
Three years after the release of the last album „Dawn Of The Dragonstar“, it’s time to tell new stories – think the makers of the new album „At the Heart of Wintervale“. I am definitely not part of the unicorn faction or LARP player. Leather bracers, similar to those worn by AMON AMARTHS Johan Hegg, I use for archery – but the Robin Hood tights are not part of that either. Which makes it clear; I’m less interested in the stories than the music. And that might be my problem…

Why? Because it is exactly these stories that make TWILIGHT FORCE. Musically – forgive me for this harsh judgement – the Swedes are „mass-produced goods“, good average – but nothing more. So the new album is a mixture of fast, doubleblast-dominated tracks like „Dragonborn“ or the symphonic tracks like the immediately following „Highlands of the Elder Dragon“ – whereby also here in the second part the high-speed train is ignited again. The whole ALbum is the usual TWILIGHT FORCE mix of narrative parts, symphonic elements with lots of piano and keyboards, the usual drum machines, crunchy guitar solos. „At the Heart of Wintervale“ is not a bad album – but not really a good one either. It doesn’t surprise me, remains predictable – just TWILIGHT FORCE. It is certainly not the fault of the Swedish sword-bearers that they are swimming in a pond in which troops like HAMMERFALL, NIGHTWISH, GAMMA RAY or also SABATON, HELLOWEEN, POWERWOLF or the high-speed band DRAGONFORCE are on the move.
What ultimately characterises TWILIGHT FORCE is their ability to tell stories. They are constantly writing the story of the Twilight Kingdoms. This story is told in the tracks, such as the title track – „where an evil curse is broken and an ancient dragon can finally roam the realms free and unhindered again!“
It surprised me a little bit – but that remains with the few bars with reggae attitude in the middle part of „Sunlight Knight“.

Conclusion

No, the album didn’t blow me away. It’s another TWILIGHT FORCE album that lives on the narratives and musically stays where its predecessors were – deeply rooted in good, but just average Power Metal with lots of symphonic parts. It’s not mine, it doesn’t grab me enough, doesn’t surprise me.
For the fans, the conclusion will remain: buy it! You can do it, but you don’t have to.
