zeigt sich nun also THE NIGHTMARE STAGE mit ihrem neuen Album «When the Curtain Closes». In den letzten Jahren ist es ruhig um die Band aus New York geworden. Seit ihrem letzten Album sind neun Jahre vergangen. Ursprünglich war THE NIGHTMARE STAGE ohne Management unterwegs, wurde aber nach einiger Zeit von Pure Steel Records unter die Fittiche genommen. Die Spezialisten für progressiven Powermetal sind zurück. Ist es jedoch nötig, sich ein Album zu holen?
Das Album
Auf jeden Fall hört man bei dieser Band als erstes eine Vielfalt der Klangwelten heraus. Im Powermetal wird eher weniger Wert auf Variabilität gelegt. Deshalb ist es schön eine Band hören zu dürfen, welche zwar durchaus Gitarren-Shredding-Potenzial hätte, sich aber im Ausdruck mässigt. Angereichert mit Theatralik und vielen verschiedenen, anderen Elementen, ist dieses Album eine wahre Wohltat für das Genre. Denn hier geht es nicht um die besten Solis, sondern um ein musikalisches Werk. Das stellt man immer wieder fest. In den Songs gibt es Abschnitte, welche beispielsweise nur von Streichern bestritten werden. Gleichzeitig kommen oft auch verschiedenste Flöten oder Pianoparts hinzu. Durch verschiedenste Faktoren verstärkt sich somit der Gesamteindruck des Theaters. Die Streicher sorgen für die nötige Intensität, Kraft und Spannung um das Werk voranzutreiben.
Vom Lyrischen her sorgt die Band immer wieder für Spannung und Entspannung. THE NIGHTMARE STAGE hinterfragt das menschliche Dasein und den Sinn des Lebens. Oftmals geben die Texte eine eher negative Meinung wieder. «From Below» schildert zum Beispiel das Ringen mit seinem eigenen Ich, welcher oftmals als Kampf zwischen Gut und Böse angesehen wird. Solche Momente erinnern mich auch wieder stark, an ein gutes Theaterstück. Falls man noch nicht genug Parallelen ziehen kann, könnte man auch noch Ödipus aus der griechischen Mythologie heranziehen. Dieser ringt lange mit einer Voraussage und kann dieser doch nicht entrinnen. Die Endgültigkeit und Machtlosigkeit des Einzelnen, im Theaterstück ein anderes Ende als das bereits festgelegte zu erhoffen, wird hier sehr schnell offensichtlich. Gleichzeitig ist die Lyrik in einigen Passagen sehr repetitiv und es werden immer wieder ähnliche Aussagen gegeben.
Von der Instrumentalisierung finden extreme Wechsel zwischen leise und ruhig, zu stürmisch und intensiv statt. Auch wird durch die Stimme des Vokalisten extrem viel Gefühl ¨übertragen. Er schafft es immer wieder schnell von der Bruststimme, in die überaus gut ausgebildete Kopfstimme zu wechseln, was eine extreme Kontrolle der Stimme voraussetzt. Als mein Lieblingsanspieltipp würde ich «Hellbound» angeben. Den hier werden schwierig einzusetzende Töne, wie der Tritonus (Abstand Grundton + 3 Ganztöne = Tritonus) verwendet. Was für mich vor allem faszinierend ist, da es nicht viele Menschen gibt, welche so geschickt mit vielen dominanten und schwierig aufzulösenden Tönen arbeiten können. Zusätzlich ist «Hellbound» gespickt mit neuen Ideen, die frischen Wind ins Genre bringen.
Das Fazit
THE NIGHTMARE STAGE hat mit ihrem neuen Album sicher einen weiteren Schritt in die richtige Richtung getan. Trotzdem bleibt die Frage offen, wie sie sich weiterentwickeln werden. Das Album finde ich interessant, weil hier viele neue Ideen aufkommen. Gleichzeitig wird eine klare Stilrichtung, nämlich Powermetal bevorzugt. Die Theatralik macht das ganze interessant und unterhaltsam. Lyrisch wäre es schön noch mehr Theater hineinzubringen und gleichzeitig mehr in den Textpassagen zu variieren. Als letzter Punkt muss die Gitarre für meinen Geschmack satter, voller und aggressiver klingen, da diese das Rückgrat des Powermetals bildet.

Enriched with theatricality and many different elements, this album is a real boon for the genre. Because this is not about the best solos, but about a musical work. That’s what you notice again and again. In the songs there are sections, which for example are only played by strings. At the same time there are often different flutes or piano parts. The overall impression of the theatre is strengthened by various factors. The strings provide the necessary intensity, power and tension to drive the work forward.
From a lyrical point of view, the band always provides tension and relaxation. THE NIGHTMARE STAGE questions human existence and the meaning of life. Often the lyrics reflect a rather negative opinion. „From Below“, for example, describes the struggle with his own self, which is often seen as a struggle between good and evil. Such moments remind me of a good play. If you can’t draw enough parallels, you could also use Oedipus from Greek mythology. He struggles for a long time with a prediction and can’t escape it. The finality and powerlessness of the individual to hope for a different end in the play than the one that has already been determined becomes very quickly apparent here. At the same time, the lyricism in some passages is very repetitive and similar statements are repeatedly made.
From instrumentalization, extreme changes take place between quiet and calm, too stormy and intense. Also, the vocalist’s voice makes a lot of feeling ¨übertragen. He always manages to change quickly from the chest voice to the extremely well trained head voice, which requires an extreme control of the voice. My favourite tip would be „Hellbound“. The tones used here are difficult to use, such as the tritone (distance between fundamental + 3 whole tones = tritone). Which is fascinating for me, because there are not many people who can work so skillfully with many dominant and difficult to resolve tones. In addition, „Hellbound“ is peppered with new ideas that bring a breath of fresh air into the genre.
The conclusion
THE NIGHTMARE STAGE has certainly taken another step in the right direction with their new album. Nevertheless, the question remains how they will develop further. I find the album interesting because many new ideas arise here. At the same time a clear style direction is preferred, namely Powermetal. The theatricality makes it all interesting and entertaining. Lyrically it would be nice to bring in more theatre and at the same time vary more in the lyrics. As a last point the guitar has to sound richer, fuller and more aggressive for my taste, because it forms the backbone of the power metal.
