THE NEW ROSES sind seit einigen Jahren im permanenten Aufstieg – daran konnte auch Corona nichts ändern. Können sie mit ihrem neuen Album an den Erfolg des Vorgängers anknüpfen? Besonders „Down By The River“ hat hier die Duftmarke gesetzt – nicht viele Songs werden über Wochen hinweg in den einschlägigen Radios dermassen rauf und runter gespielt.
Allerdings sind Timmy Rough – Leadvoc, Guitar, Dizzy Daniels – Guitar, Hardy – Bass und Urban Berz – Drums, Backing Vocals nicht dafür bekannt, dass sie sich auf ihren Lorbeeren ausruhen wollen. Dafür sind die Deutschen schlicht zu sehr Rocker.
Die Frage, die sich also stellt; was bietet das Album, das bereits seit zwei Wochen auf dem Markt ist? Was ist anders, neu, unerwartet?
Nicht unerwartet, sondern durchaus erwünscht und gewollt – THE NEW ROSES klingen, wie wir es uns wünschen – nach Rock, Rock, Rock! Dabei bieten sie auf dem Album die gesamte Bandbreite von harten Rockriffen bis hin zu Balladen. Ein Beispiel für Letztere ist „True Love“. Die Ballade ist an und für sich nicht spektakulär, sie präsentiert aber ein wichtiges Element der Band im Vordergrund – Timmy Roughs Stimme. Dieses Reibeisenorgan, dass sich gleichwohl tonsicher in die Höhe schwingen kann – das ist die Stimme, aus denen grosse Rockbands geschmiedet werden. Es ist darum auch kein Zufall, dass die Jungs schon als Support für JUDAS PRIEST unterwegs waren, mit SAXON, TREMONTI, FOREIGNER oder KISS. Da darf man sich schon ein wenig geadelt fühlen.
Neben den Balladen gibt es Midtempo-Rocksongs wie „Playing With Fire“ oder richtigen Brettern wie „Dead Of Night“. Was allen Tracks gemeinsam ist – Melodien gehören in jeder Spielart dazu, öfters auch mehrstimmiger Gesang und gleichzeitig präzise und knackige Drums und Bass sowie die fetten Gitarren, bei denen Timmy und Dizzy ihre Finger drin haben.
Die Frage aller Fragen bleibt aber – gibt es einen Nachfolger für „Down By The River“? Diese Frage aller Fragen ist jedoch dämlich, denn selbstverständlich gibt es das nicht – es gibt Tracks, welche dasselbe Kaliber repräsentieren – und das ist besser, viel besser. So bleibt dem Erfolgstrack vom Vorgänger sein Platz, und links oder rechts oder vorne oder hinten gibt es Platz für neue Tracks. Einer ist sicher „“The Usual Suspects“ – der eine ähnlich Hookline bietet, insgesamt aber eine Schippe härter ist. Und für mich gehört auf die andere Seite ganz klar „1st Time for Everything“ – viel Druck, viel Melodie – viel Rock halt!
Und dann wäre da noch „Sweet Gloria“ – so eine Art Hardrock mit Rockabilly-Attitüde – man höre bei den Gitarren ganz gut hin!
Fazit
„Sweet Poison“ ist ein würdiger Nachfolger von „Nothing But Wild“ – und eine Weiterentwicklung.!Das Album bietet einerseits den Sound, den wir von THE NEW ROSES erwarten, andererseits alle Ingredienzen, die es für ein neues, grosses Rockalbum -braucht der Band stehen die grossen Bühnen zu! Selbstverständlich kaufen – das Album und die Konzerttickets!

THE NEW ROSES have been on a permanent rise for a few years now – even Corona couldn’t change that. Can they continue the success of their predecessor with their new album? Especially „Down By The River“ set the scent here – not many songs are played so up and down for weeks on the relevant radios.
However, Timmy Rough – lead vocals, guitar, Dizzy Daniels – guitar, Hardy – bass and Urban Berz – drums, backing vocals are not known for resting on their laurels. The Germans are simply too much rockers for that.
So the question that arises; what does the album, which has already been on the market for a fortnight, offer? What is different, new, unexpected?
Not unexpected, but quite desirable and intentional – THE NEW ROSES sound like we want them to sound – rock, rock, rock! On the album they offer the whole range from hard rock riffs to ballads. An example of the latter is „True Love“. The ballad is not spectacular in itself, but it presents an important element of the band in the foreground – Timmy Rough’s voice. This grating organ, which can nevertheless swing into the heights with a sure tone – this is the voice from which great rock bands are forged. It is therefore no coincidence that the guys have already supported JUDAS PRIEST, SAXON, TREMONTI, FOREIGNER or KISS. So you can feel a little ennobled.
Besides the ballads, there are midtempo rock songs like „Playing With Fire“ or real rockers like „Dead Of Night“. What all tracks have in common – melodies belong in every variety, often also polyphonic singing and at the same time precise and crisp drums and bass as well as the fat guitars, where Timmy and Dizzy have their fingers in.
But the question of all questions remains – is there a successor to „Down By The River“? But this question of all questions is stupid, because of course there is not – there are tracks that represent the same calibre – and that is better, much better. So the successful track from the predecessor has its place, and there is room for new tracks on the left or right or front or back. One of them is certainly „“The Usual Suspects“ – which offers a similar hookline, but is altogether a notch heavier. And for me, „1st Time for Everything“ clearly belongs on the other side – a lot of pressure, a lot of melody – a lot of rock!
And then there is „Sweet Gloria“ – a kind of hard rock with rockabilly attitude – listen to the guitars!
Conclusion
„Sweet Poison“ is a worthy successor to „Nothing But Wild“ – and a further development! On the one hand, the album offers the sound we expect from THE NEW ROSES, and on the other hand, it has all the ingredients needed for a new, great rock album – the band is ready for the big stages! Buy the album and the concert tickets!
