Nein, es geht nicht um einen Hund in der Mangel oder so. „Dog In A Manger“ ist eine Bezeichnung für einen Spielverderber. So haben SMOOTH HOUND SMITH ihr mittlerweile drittes Album betitelt, welches am 8. September erscheint.

Die Band
SMOOTH HOUND SMITH sind eigentlich ein Duo, genau genommen ein Ehepaar, also ein Familienbetrieb.
Zack Smith singt und spielt in erster Linie Gitarre, wenn es sein muss auch diverse andere Instrumente. Caitlin Doyle-Smith ist also seine Frau, Singt ebenfalls und spielt ebenfalls eine Reihe von Instrumenten.
SMOOTH HOUND SMITH war ursprünglich Zacks Soloprojekt, zusätzlich spielte er Bass in einer Bluegrass-Band. in Los Angeles begann ihr gemeinsames Experiment, das sie dann über verschiedene Stationen nach Tennesse führte, wo sie heute noch leben.
Das Album
„Dog In A Manger“ passt definitiv nicht ins normale Beuteschema von Rocknews, auch wenn es durchaus rockige und bluesige Elemente gibt. Warum ich es dennoch ausgewählt habe? Weil es einfach ein schönes Album ist und es mich erstaunt, wie eine One Man – One Woman-Band schafft, dermassen abwechslungsreich zu sein.
Da gibt es zum Beispiel „Second Hand News“ ein Singer-Songwriter-Folk-Picking-Song vom Feinsten. Hier kommen beide Stimmen zum Tragen. Es ist ein Song in der Tradition eines John Denver oder Johnny Cash und June Carter-Cash. Solche Folksongs machen uns Amerika deutlich sympathischer als ein hier nicht genauer zu benennender Blondschopf.
„Waiting For A Spark“ wiederum ist ein Vertreter der relativ rockigen Country-Art, wie wir sie von grossen Exponenten wie Dolly Parton oder Kenny Rogers kennen.
„Three Shades Of Lonely“ ist – so wiedersprüchlich es auch klingen mag – eine Art soulig-funkiger Blues mit Kuhmusik-Attitüde. Die Gitarren kommen da doch schon relativ rough rüber.
Mein persönlicher Liebling ist der Titeltrack „Dog In A Manger“. Warum? Schon einmal etwas von Simon & Garfunkel gehört? Sie haben nicht nur jede Menge Hits geschrieben, die auch heute noch gecovert werden („Sound Of Silence“ von DISTURBED), sondern sind durch ihren zweistimmigen Gesang weltberühmt geworden. Genau diesen Groove liefern die Beiden hier, ohne zur Kopie zu verkommen.
Fazit
„Dog In A Manger“ ist ein etwas verrücktes Album mit einer unheimlichen musikalischen Breite. Es schrammt immer hart an der Grenze zum Kitsch, was wohl Ausdruck der amerikanischen Herkunft sein dürfte. Ich freue mich darauf, wenn die Beiden einmal die Schweiz besuchen sollten – ich denke, dass sie live eine sehr angenehme Atmosphäre erzeugen werden.

The band
SMOOTH HOUND SMITH are actually a duo, strictly speaking a married couple, a family business.
Zack Smith sings and plays guitar in the first place, and if it has to be, also various other instruments. So Caitlin Doyle-Smith is his wife, also sings and plays a lot of instruments.
SMOOTH HOUND SMITH was originally Zack’s solo project, in addition he played bass in a bluegrass band. in Los Angeles they started their joint experiment, which led them through different stations to Tennessee, where they still live today.
The album
„Dog In A Manger“ definitely doesn’t fit into the normal baggage scheme of Rocknews, even if there are rocky and bluesy elements. Why did I choose it anyway? Because it’s simply a beautiful album and it amazes me how a One Man – One Woman band manages to be so varied.
For example there is „Second Hand News“ a singer-songwriter-folk-picking song at its finest. Here both voices come to bear. It is a song in the tradition of John Denver or Johnny Cash and June Carter-Cash. Such folk songs make America much more likeable to us than a blonde guy who can’t be named more precisely here.
„Waiting For A Spark“, on the other hand, is a representative of the relatively rocky country art, as we know it from great exponents like Dolly Parton or Kenny Rogers.
„Three Shades Of Lonely“ is – as contradictory as it may sound – a kind of soulful-funk blues with a cow music attitude. The guitars come across relatively rough.
My personal favourite is the title track „Dog In A Manger“. Why? Ever heard of Simon & Garfunkel? They not only wrote a lot of hits, which are still covered today („Sound Of Silence“ by DISTURBED), but became world-famous by their two-part singing. Exactly this groove they deliver here without degenerating into a copy.
Fulness
„Dog In A Manger“ is a somewhat crazy album with an uncanny musical breadth. It always scratches hard on the edge of kitsch, which is probably an expression of its American origin. I’m looking forward to the two of them visiting Switzerland once – I think they will create a very pleasant atmosphere live.
