SHAKRA – „Just Live Loud!“ kommt im September
Ich geb’s dann gleich einmal zu – SHAKRA liefern mit „Just Live Loud!“ das zweite gute Album in Folge. Den Glauben hatte ich vor einigen Jahren beinahe aufgegeben.

Wer meine Reviews und Konzertberichte kennt, weiss, dass ich in den letzten Jahren nicht nur Freude am Schweizer Hardrockexport hatte. Sowohl die Konzerte, als auch die Alben haben mich zwiespältig zurüch gelassen. Immer gute bis sehr gute Ansätze aber nicht bis zum Ende umgesetzt. Seit 2023 ihr Album „Invincible“ auf den Markt kam, erlebe ich die Band so, wie sie für mich früher waren – eine der besten Hardrockbands der Schweiz. mit „Just Live Loud! legen sie nach.
Etwas, das die Emmentaler auszeichnet, ist ihre Beständigkeit. SHAKRA hatten früher zwar den einen oder anderen Lineupwechsel – seit 2015 ist die Besetzung aber fix. Seit der Rückkehr von Sänger Mark Fox 2015 gehören dazu: Thom Blunier – Lead Guitars, Thomas Muster – Guitars, Cyril Montavon – Bass und Roger Tanner – Drums.
Mittlerweile bespielen die Schweizer nicht nur Bühnen im Inland, sondern auch weit über die Grenzen hinaus kleinere und grössere Bühnen. Und das tun sie seit sagenhaften 36 Jahren.
Aber jä nun – etwas lange zu tun, heisst noch nicht zwingend, dass es auch gut ist. „Just Live Loud!“ ist es aber definitiv. Klar machen SHAKRA weiterhin Hardrock, nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Und Hardrock ist jetzt nicht die universellste Musik der Welt – aber das will der Fan auch gar nicht. Der Fan will knackige Riffs, geile Soli, fetten Bass- und Drumdruck und eine charismatische Stimme, diese überwiegend in höheren Tonlagen mit einer guten Portion Scream.
Ohne der Rhythmusequipe zu nahe treten zu wollen oder sie gar herabzuwürdigen – bei SHAKRA geben Thom Blunier als Leadgitarrist und Mark Fox am Mikrofon die Qualitätsmerkmale. Thom Blunier ist dabei ein Urgestein und prägt die Truppe seit Anbeginn. Ursänger Pete Wiedmer habe ich nicht erlebt, Mark Fox und John Prakesh haben für mich auf Augenhöhe gesungen – für die Fans dürfte Fox etwas mehr Quintessenz sein. Und das Album?
Beinahe vergessen, da gibt es ja nicht nur Bandgeschichte, sondern auch neue Musik. Das Album wartet mit zwei Tracks auf, die sofort ins Auge stechen: „Left Outside Alone“ und „Left Outside Alone“. Jepp, da wird fröhlich ein Anastacia-Track gecovert. Und beide Tracks sind dieselbe Rockumsetzung – also teilweise zumidest. Song 13 auf dem Album ist die „SHALRA“-only Version. Und bei Track 4 hat die Band etwas getan, dass man als gescheit bezeichnen könnte; sie haben sich ein toughes Mädel mit an Mikrofon geholt. Niemand weniger als Megaröhre SERAINA TELLI macht die Rocker für gut vier Minuten zur „female fronted“ Band.
Das Seraina das Teil rockt, erstaunt niemanden. Die Aargauerin wird seit viel zu langer Zeit unter Wert gehandelt. Es gibt nicht so viele Frauen in der Schweiz, die auf diesem Niveau performen. Was aber – auch nur im ersten Moment erstaunt – AASTACIA hat hier einen ausgewachsenen Rocktrack geschrieben. Naja, so ganz unrockig ist ihre eigenen Version ja auch nicht – singen kann die Amerikanerin je definitiv. Und jetzt verrocken Mark Fox und Seraina Telli das Stück nochmals etwas mehr.
Allerdings macht noch einer das Beste aus der Vorlage; Thom Blunier wächst beim Solo über sich hinaus – was er hier bietet, ist ganz grosses Kino.
Ähnliches kann man übrigens auch zum Opener „Let The Show Begin“ sagen – das Teil ist richtig fett und überzeugt nicht nur durch seinen straight forward-Groove, sondern ebenfalls durch die geniale Gitarrenarbeit.
Ein ebenfalls sehr fettes Teil ist der Track „Lost Generation“. Bereits nach den ersten Takten ist klar – SHAKRA schrammen öfter hart an der Metalgrenze vorbei. „Lost Generation“ brettert so los, dass auch die melodischen Parts und der Midtempostomp nichts am wuchtigen Gesamteindruck ändern können.
Manchmal frage ich mich ja auch, warum ein bestimmter Track zum Albumtitel wird – oder der Albumtitel zum Track – egal. „Just Live Loud!“ ist ein geiler Track – ziemlich viel Druck, erneut fette Gitarrenarbeit und ein Mark Fox auf der Höhe seiner stimmlichen Entwicklung. Das ist übrigens auch nicht mehr so selbstverständlich, lassen Stimmen im Alter doch eher nach und Mark Fox ist mit 47 auch nciht mehr ganz jung. Aber „JUST LIVE LOUD!“ ist tatsächlich eine der besten Gesamtleistungen des Sängers, wenn nicht seine Beste.
Hier noch ein kleiner Side-Kick. Mark Fox scheint durchaus ein Gespür für gute Sängerinnen zu haben – Schweizer Sängerinnen. So hat er mit der genialen Caroline Breitler bei „If Nobody Loves You“ mitgewirkt. Das wäre doch was für das nächste Album?
Fazit
Ohne Wenn und Aber – mit „Just Live Loud!“ liefern SHAKRA ein starkes Album, eines ihrer stärksten überhaupt. Da findet sich alles, was das Rockerherz begehrt; fette Riffs, geile Soli, einen Mark Fox in Höchstform und eine Seraina Telli, welche quasi das Tüpfelchen auf dem i liefert. Gratuliere – darf man zwingend kaufen!

Anyone familiar with my reviews and concert reports knows that, in recent years, I haven’t been entirely enthusiastic about Switzerland’s hard rock exports. Both the concerts and the albums have left me with mixed feelings. Always good to very good ideas, but never fully realized. Since their album “Invincible” was released in 2023, I’ve been experiencing the band the way I used to—as one of Switzerland’s best hard rock bands. With “Just Live Loud!,” they’re taking it up a notch.
One thing that sets the band from the Emmental region apart is their consistency. SHAKRA did go through a few lineup changes in the past – but the lineup has been set since 2015. Since singer Mark Fox’s return in 2015, the band has consisted of: Thom Blunier – lead guitars, Thomas Muster – guitars, Cyril Montavon – bass, and Roger Tanner – drums.
These days, the Swiss band performs not only on stages at home but also on stages both large and small far beyond their borders. And they’ve been doing so for an incredible 36 years.
But wait a minute – just because something’s been around a long time doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. “Just Live Loud!” definitely is, though. Sure, SHAKRA still plays hard rock – nothing more, nothing less. And hard rock isn’t exactly the most universal music in the world – but that’s not what the fans want anyway. Fans want crisp riffs, killer solos, heavy bass and drum punch, and a charismatic voice – one that mostly hits the higher registers with a good dose of screaming.
Without wanting to offend the rhythm section or disparage them in any way – at SHAKRA, Thom Blunier on lead guitar and Mark Fox on vocals are the hallmarks of the band’s quality. Thom Blunier is a veteran who has shaped the band since its inception. I never got to experience original singer Pete Wiedmer, but Mark Fox and John Prakesh sang on equal footing in my opinion – though for fans, Fox is probably a bit more iconic. And the album?
I almost forgot—it’s not just about the band’s history, but also new music. The album features two tracks that immediately stand out: “Left Outside Alone” and “Left Outside Alone.” Yep, they’ve cheerfully covered an Anastacia track. And both tracks are the same rock arrangement—at least in part. Track 13 on the album is the “SHALRA”-only version. And on track 4, the band did something you could call smart; they brought in a tough girl on vocals. None other than powerhouse vocalist SERAINA TELLI turns the rockers into a “female-fronted” band for a good four minutes.
It comes as no surprise that Seraina rocks this track. The singer from Aargau has been underrated for far too long. There aren’t many women in Switzerland who perform at this level. But what’s surprising—even if only at first glance – is that AASTACIA has written a full-fledged rock track here. Well, their own version isn’t exactly un-rock-like either – the American singer can definitely hold her own. And now Mark Fox and Seraina Telli are giving the song an even more rock-oriented twist.
However, there’s someone else who’s making the most of the original; Thom Blunier really outdoes himself on the solo – what he delivers here is absolutely spectacular.
Incidentally, the same can be said about the opener “Let The Show Begin” – the track is really powerful and impresses not only with its straightforward groove but also with the brilliant guitar work.
Another really powerful track is “Lost Generation.” It’s clear from the very first bars – SHAKRA often skirt the edge of metal. “Lost Generation” kicks off with such intensity that even the melodic parts and the mid-tempo stomp can’t change the powerful overall impression.
Sometimes I wonder why a certain track becomes the album title – or the album title becomes the track – but it doesn’t matter. “Just Live Loud!” is an awesome track – plenty of power, once again killer guitar work, and Mark Fox at the peak of his vocal range. That’s not something to be taken for granted these days, since voices tend to weaken with age, and at 47, Mark Fox isn’t exactly young anymore. But “JUST LIVE LOUD!” is actually one of the singer’s best overall performances, if not his very best.
Conclusion
No ifs, ands, or buts – with “Just Live Loud!”, SHAKRA delivers a strong album, one of their strongest ever. It has everything a rocker’s heart desires: heavy riffs, killer solos, a Mark Fox in top form, and a Seraina Telli who practically puts the icing on the cake. Congratulations – this is a must-buy!
