RUBICON – „Demonstar“

So, jetzt mal wieder volle Kanne Power Metal – oder sogar Heavy Power Metal – wie die Band ihren Sound nennt.

Gemeint ist die französisch – amerikanische Harteisencombo RUBICON, welche mit „Demonstar“ am 16. Juli 21 ihren zweiten Volllänger auf den Markt pfeffert.
„Zur Band gehören der französische Gitarrist Bob Saliba (Galderia), der Bassist und Arrangeur Dmitry Belf (Frost, Ashen Light, Imperial Age, SGgmaGc chorus) sowie der amerikanische Session-Gitarrist Richard Fischer (Midnight Eternal). Ein besonderes Merkmal von RUBICON ist auch der charismatische Gesang des ständigen Frontmanns der Band, Ivan Bulankov, der an Bruce Dickinson erinnert!
Der Stil des Albums, der auf dem klassischen Heavy-Power-Metal des amerikanischen Vorbilds basiert, umfasst eine ziemlich breite Palette von Genres, die zeitweise das Territorium des Doom-, Gothic- und sogar Black-Metals beleuchten.“

Das sind ganz schön selbstbewusste Worte aus dem Promotext – für einmal finde ich sie korrekt – Sänger Ivan Bulankov agiert tatsächlich auf einem sehr hohen Niveau. Das lässt sich allerdings auch von den anderen Musikern sagen. Sie hauen die Tracks nicht nur in vollem Tempo raus, sondern auch mit einer technischen Qualität, vor der man sich beeindruckt verneigen kann.

Was gibt es zur Musik zu sagen? Nun, es handelt sich um ein Zehnerpaket an hartem, schnellem Metal, sehr fette Gitarren, eine wie gesagt überragende Stimmung, ein rundes, kompaktes Stück Musik, das man sich antun sollte.
Es fällt mir nicht leicht, hier Anspieltipps zu nennen. Ich nenne darum mal den Track, der mich am wenigsten überzeugt. Es ist „Down The Darkness“ – der mich zwar als Song anspricht, insbesondere wegen der Gitarrenarbeit – mehr als solide! Was mich dagegen abtörnt, ist die Stimme. Hier gelingt Bulankov nicht, was er sonst auf dem Album schafft. Seine Stimme klingt dünn, beinahe unsicher, besonders in den mittelhohen Passagen. Es klingt fast so, als ob seine Stimme nur funktioniert, wenn er mit hoher Lautstärke und viel Power singen kann. Es bleibt aber die einzige Enttäuschung auf dem Album.
Dafür gefällt mir der Titeltrack ausserordentlich gut; „Demonstar“ beginnt langweilig, fast etwas doomig. Dieses Tempo wird dann immer wieder aufgenommen und strukturiert den Song – dazwischen geben die Jungs immer wieder Gas, richtig Gas.
Ein weitere Song, den ich wegen seines Grooves empfehlen kann „Line Of Dreams“ – hier erinnert der Fronter tatsächlich etwas an den grandiosen Bruce Dickinson.

Fazit

RUBICON stehen noch nicht im Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit – was schade ist und ihrer Qualität nicht gerecht wird. Ich kann nur empfehlen, sich das Album einzuverleiben. Oder anders gesagt – kaufen!

The French-American hard-iron combo RUBICON, which peppers its second full-length on the market with „Demonstar“ on 16 July 21.

A special feature of RUBICON is also the charismatic vocals of the band’s permanent frontman Ivan Bulankov, reminiscent of Bruce Dickinson!
The album’s style, based on the classic heavy power metal of the American model, encompasses a fairly wide range of genres, at times illuminating the territory of doom, gothic and even black metal.“

These are quite confident words from the promo text – for once I think they are correct – singer Ivan Bulankov indeed performs at a very high level. However, the same can be said of the other musicians. Not only do they bang out the tracks at full speed, but also with a technical quality one can bow down to in awe.

What is there to say about the music? Well, it’s a ten-pack of hard, fast metal, very fat guitars, a superior mood as I said, a round, compact piece of music that should be listened to.
It’s not easy for me to name playback tips here. So I’ll name the track that convinces me the least. It’s „Down The Darkness“ – which appeals to me as a song, especially because of the guitar work – more than solid! What turns me off, however, is the voice. Here Bulankov doesn’t succeed in what he usually does on the album. His voice sounds thin, almost uncertain, especially in the mid-range passages. It almost sounds as if his voice only works when he can sing at high volume and with a lot of power. But it remains the only disappointment on the album.
In exchange, I like the title track exceptionally well; „Demonstar“ starts boringly, almost a bit doomy. This tempo is then picked up again and again and structures the song – in between, the guys keep stepping on the gas, really stepping on the gas.
Another song I can recommend because of its groove is „Line Of Dreams“ – here the frontman actually reminds me a bit of the grandiose Bruce Dickinson.
