RADIO STRANGE – „Handmade Bastard“

When I review bluesy or punky sounds, in good Swiss fashion I wish for „Meh Dräck!“ This is becoming rarer and rarer nowadays, perfectly recorded, often clinical albums are presented today, mistakes mercilessly weeded out, crooked sounds readjusted.
A rather different approach is taken by the three seasoned men from the Zurich Oberland. Yves Ettounsi on guitars and vocals, Stefan Rothlin on drums and Mark Frischknecht on bass have dedicated themselves to traditional grunge and punk and stand by their weaknesses, dirt and rawness. That’s right, these were once the ingredients of this „no future“ sound, when bands like the RAMONES or the SEX PISTOLS put their stamp on a movement. Social criticism, as we understand it today, was never a thing back then. Everything outside the scene was establishment and condemned to the point of abysmal contempt. It was also a fact that anyone who could master at least three chords and could afford a power rudder made music, played in a band or founded his own band.
Honestly, RADIO STRANGE doesn’t go that far, the men are family men, work in normal bread jobs and don’t wear mohawks and fucked-up clothes. That’s not punk anymore, you can buy it at H&M…
But that’s typical for the genre – the guys make music that will hardly be accepted by an established label, the international breakthrough is probably unrealistic and hardly in the focus of the trio. So why do they make music?

When I listen to the Album, it’s probably because they love music, original, dirty and honest sound without drivel. With „Handmade Bastard“ they release their debut. Exactly a dozen songs made it onto the album, which by the way is really handmade; composed, recorded, produced, mixed and mastered in their living rooms – or something like that.
And that’s exactly how the record sounds. Tracks are blasted into your ears that are characterised by crooked tones in the vocals, technically manageable use of instruments, and effects that seemed to have been forgotten for a long time – simply wonderful! The guys have fulfilled another condition; with one exception none of the songs is longer than 4 minutes.
The opener „Stars N Stripes“ starts with a guitar riff that somehow reminds of FALCO, but then quickly dives into the depths of raw punk and grunge; fast, relentless, with a roughened voice that always scrapes hard against the scream. By the way, the sound is pretty fat for a trio, compact, with a lot of power!
„Homesick“ somehow also appeals to me – such a mixture between fun punk attitude mixed with pretty fat metal riffing. Radio“ also sounds pretty metal, punchy and straight ahead. STRANGE RADIO take no prisoners, they break off like a musical wrecking ball. It’s hard to imagine them happily driving home after a gig and cutting the kids‘ sandwiches in the morning. Well, maybe they don’t… On the other hand, they mix a musically very varied Müesli ( in High German Müsli, although in Switzerland that’s something else again…).
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE name them as one of their influences – musically this is implemented to some extent in „Partners In Crime“, once again a very heartily made piece of Metal. It’s hard to imagine what this would sound like if the guys were five…
The fact that they are not quite so clueless musically after all is shown by „Changes“, my absolute favourite track. A drum intro like from a marching band, but behind it a wave of guitar riffs that would suit any metal band. A bit later the vocals join in – could be punk or grunge, but also hardcore of the gracious kind – in any case a really cool track!
„Skyfall“ should definitely be listened to. The song constantly switches between two moods and is dominated by the guitar tuned in Drop D.

Conclusion

Dear people, finally some music that doesn’t slap on a blow-dry and make-up. Here comes unpolished, loud sound that is worth listening to in smaller, medium and bigger clubs – gladly also open air. Even there, it will hardly reach WACKEN, but that’s not where the sound belongs. It belongs on stages where the contact with the audience is so close that the drops of sweat from the stage don’t miss their target. Predicate? Buy it and listen terribly loud!
