„Howl Of The Banshees“ ist mein zweiter Lieblingstrack.
„I Waited All Too Long, I Will Not Wait anymore… Before You Know, I Will Be Gone“ – das sind die klassischen Herz-zerbrochen–Story-Lyrics, also genau das Richtige für eine Ballade. Fuck, hab ich da was Falsches geraucht?
Kurz und bündig; „I Will Be Gone“ ist eine tolle Ballade ohne Schnörkel.

Fazit

English Version

Of course I know that the album „Metal Commando“ has been on the market for some time and it has reached several good chart entries. Nevertheless, I had to deal intensively with the record – and that takes time!

Danny Frischknecht

yes, it’s going to be a huge rave and the album has completely blown me away. Why didn’t this review come out on the release date or earlier, as it should have? Because I had to confirm my first feeling, consolidate the first impressions. After all, I don’t give the title „album of the year“ lightly.
PRIMAL FEAR have been on the road for what feels like a hundred years, since 1997 to be precise. What is unusual is that the founding members Ralf Scheepers (vocals), Mat Sinner (vocals and bass) and guitarist Tom Naumann are still or again involved in the band. Tom Naumann has a kind of „on-off“ relationship to PRIMAL FEAR, since 2015 he has been back again.
Besides the primals, Magnus Karlsson and Alex Beyrodt on the six-strings and Michael Ehré on the drums are part of the band, which altogether makes for a highly explosive mix.
I don’t think much of the Wikipedia article on „Power Metal“, especially because there are some bands listed which I definitely don’t see in this subgenre. But when I list exponents like HAMMERFALL, SABATON, HELLOWEEN, DRAGONFORCE, POWERWOLF or RAGE, I have to say that I increasingly see PRIMAL FEAR as the spearhead of this style. They may not be as fast as DRAGONFORCE, not as epic as HAMMERFALL, definitely less made-up than POWERWOLF and not as military as SABATON. But they are creative, changeable, versatile and musically simply perfect.

With „Metal Commando“ the band has set an unparalleled milestone. Eleven songs cavort on studio disc number 13, including the thirteen-minute hit „Infinity“. It goes without saying that the album contains all the power metal ingredients; cool riffs and solos, crisp drums and a lot of tempo, the icing on the cake being the characteristically high vocals, whether as a solo by Scheepers or as polyphonic parts.
You want examples of cool tracks? No problem, I can name eleven.
„Infinity“ is a track for men with balls – those who expect and demand from their audience today that they listen to a thirteen-minute story. Here this is not a problem, rather a bright joy. Bells and guitar solo lines open the song, very harmonious, carried. Scheepers then steps in and mimes the narrator and briefly points out how a horny metal voice has to sound. The hookline, which keeps peeling out of the background, is simply brilliant. Set precisely tone for tone, not too many, but not too few tones. After two minutes a riff wave builds up, drums and bass give more and more gas – this is how Powermetal goes! The chorus is very catchy, will give a sing-along anthem live, which can also be sung 50’000 beats per minute, the melody grabs you and stays there. Bit by bit instrumental parts replace the singing, the stringmen intervene dominantly in the action. From minute seven on, the bells briefly reappear before the guitar leads into a quiet vocal part and the chorus builds up again, lifting the music up and raising it to a tower of power and energy. After nine minutes 45, it sometimes seems as if the track is finished, it is transferred into a new song. Monastic vocals appear in the background, accompanied by drums and piano phrases, the music spirals up once more from the background before a chime re-invites the riffing, the drums kick in, and the guitars play the chorus again, like a new introduction. Now the track is symphonic, suitable for film, builds up more and more tension, which only dissolves when the bells slowly fade away and the piano gently leads over. Then the end, finished, is over after 13 minutes and 12 seconds. The thing should be played on a system that has enough humming!
But there is another 43 minutes of music. My favorite track – it could be from the power metal textbook – is „Halo“. Straight ahead, powerful and fast, polyphonic vocals and polyphonic guitars included, whipped forward by hammering drums and booming bass – that’s how it has to be!

I feel a similar feeling when I listen to the opener „I Am Alive“. The track starts out more bombastic, but quickly picks up speed and can’t be stopped anymore. There is only one direction – forward, and fast!
A battle anthem should not be missing, it comes with „Raise Your Fists“. The track settles in the middle tempo range, gives Scheeper’s voice an enormous amount of space, offers glissando and vibrato space and settles directly into the ear canal.
Let’s linger a while with the fast tracks before we turn to the soft part of the album.
„Howl Of The Banshees“ is my second favorite track. Here the guitar work is especially fun, sometimes playful, sometimes fast and fat – with a hookline that will make the fans go wild on this track. This will be a live-firecracker!
Then we lose a word about the smoothest track. Scheepers opens „I Will Be Gone“ and pepper a voice on the table that can compete with the greatest rock and metal singers of this world. The song itself is a rock ballad, which has washed itself. „I Waited All Too Long, I Will Not Wait anymore… Before You Know, I Will Be Gone“ – these are the classic heartbreaking-story lyrics, just the right thing for a ballad. The vocals are of course polyphonic and interwoven with pain, penetrate deep into the soul and reveal the weaknesses of the human psyche… Fuck, did I smoke something wrong?
Short and sweet; „I Will Be Gone“ is a great ballad without frills.

Conclusion

Why exactly should this have been the „album of the year“? Firstly, because I haven’t heard an album that was equally good or better and secondly, because I don’t expect one anymore. „Metal Commando“ is musically and technically perfect, no wrong tone, no weird riff, no sloppy bass or croaky vocals, and the guitar work is simply terrific. Moreover, the album is varied, exploring different corners. The whole thing happens without masturbative behaviour (guitar rumgesole by DRAGONFORCE 🙂 and without exaggerated pathos (SABATON…).
With „Metal Commando“ I mean to feel that the guys have fun with the music, worked with enthusiasm and joy on the album and gave me a lot of pleasure.
