PRETTY MAIDS – „Undress Your Madness“

PRETTY MAIDS – „Undress Your Madness“

Atkins hat eine faszinierende Stimme, das zeigt er auf dem Album beispielsweise bei „If You Want Peace (Prepare For War)“ oder der Ballade „Will You Still Kiss Me (If I See You In Heaven).

15 albums have been released since 1984, with „Undress Your Madness“ they deliver number 16. Even though fronter Ronnie Atkins is suffering from cancer, this doesn’t seem to prevent the guys from delivering again. Guitarist Ken Hammer, bassist Rene Shades, drummer Allan Sørensen as well as guitarist and keyboarder Chris Laney are not immersed in sadness and inactivity, but are bringing more than just solid hard rock to the market.
But it remains to be hoped that Atkins‘ health will soon improve so that the band can present the album live to the audience.

The album „Undress Your Madness“ with its 11 tracks and almost three quarters of an hour playing time keeps what the fans had promised. PRETTY MAIDS know exactly how good heavy rock should sound at the end of 2019. Compact and powerful, varied and musical as well as technically superior. One can still ask oneself why the Danes have been denied the big breakthrough so far. Maybe because they lack a typical unique selling point? The guys play modernized eighties rock on a high level, but somehow they just make it too similar to other bands. Atkins has a fascinating voice, which he shows on the album for example with „If You Want Peace (Prepare For War)“ or the ballad „Will You Still Kiss Me (If I See You In Heaven). Colleague Hammer plays a very good guitar, the rest of the guys can play music. But others can do that too, be it cult bands like DEEP PURPLE or THIN LIZZY or the NWOBHM heroes of SAXON. Even bands like CRYSTAL BALL, who already supported PRETTY MAIDS, sound similar – and not worse. For example, the German CRYSTAL BALL shouter Mageney sounds pretty similar.
Maybe it’s also because the band fishes in two waters – heavy metal and hard rock, they’re neither fish nor bird and therefore compete with bands that have spacialized themselves.

Conclusion

Not the less the Danes present with „Undress Your Madness“ one of the better Hard’n’Heavy albums of this year. You can put the disc on the analogue or digital music shelf – or give it to a lover. For me PRETTY MAIDS are first and foremost a live institution – and with the new album they have presented material to continue to rock the stages. Let’s hope that Ronnie Atkins‘ health will soon make this possible.
