Es ist also nicht das viele Zeugs, sondern für mich persönlich sind es drei Dinge;

„Time“, „Money“, „Us And Them“ oder das geniale „The Great Gig In The Sky“ – jeder kennt es und darf sich trotzdem auf noch bessere Versionen freuen.

Fazit

„The Dark Side Of The Moon“ is one of the most important works in music history, so a rating below 10 points would only be possible if the remastering had been screwed up. Needless to say, that’s impossible – the technicians have virtually perfected a perfect piece of music, raised it to a current, technical level.
Whether it comes close to the analog original, I can’t say, since I only have a digital stream and no vinyl. Nevertheless, the power of the wav files is impressive, on the laptop, with the headphones, with the studio speakers in the office and with my beloved sound fridges in the living room. I’ll have to wait until the 50th Anniversary Pack is out for the final comparison.
Oh yes, one detail; the thing is very extensive and has a proud price, around 300 coins you have to put on the table. Too expensive? That depends on the point of view. If I had to choose between a week „all inclusive“ at the Bosporus or on Malle and the boxset – fuck Bosporus and Malle!

The new deluxe boxset contains the CD and gatefold vinyl of the 2023 remastered studio album and a Blu-Ray + DVD with the original 5.1 mix and the remastered stereo versions. Another new Blu-Ray features an Atmos mix of the album, plus CD and LP versions of „The Dark Side Of The Moon – Live At Wembley Empire Pool, London, 1974“ and posters, stickers, leaflets….

And no – this sheer amount of material is not the most important thing, not what justifies the price of the set. Moreover, individual parts are also available for purchase, so the price is correspondingly lower.
So it’s not the amount of stuff, but for me personally it’s three things;

  1. the historical value of the material
  2. the live album finally on vinyl
  3. the unspeakable quality of the sound, which I didn’t expect before listening to it.
    As I said – can you make a perfect album even more perfect? You can, by renewing the material originally mastered by Alan Parsons with today’s technology under the expert hands and ears of James Guthrie. And here we are talking about analog material on tapes, unfiltered, uncompressed. You can imagine it like RAW recordings in photography. What then appears on CD is a compressed copy, to say the least.

The live album was recorded by Brian Humphries and Phill Brown at the time, remastered by Andy Jackson.
What that makes it – even more subtleties, more selectivity, more subtleties and more dynamics than was even possible back then. „The Dark Side Of The Moon“ was and is for me an album that reveals new facets with every listen, opens up new details. And now the whole thing is simply available in even better quality. But, as mentioned above; the vinyl experience is still ahead of me. Probably the limitation there will be my system – the appropriate equipment would probably require a significant new investment.
Wouldn’t I have to say something about the songs? Why exactly? There are no new tracks, the songs are the same, all classics and well known. „Time“, „Money“, „Us And Them“ or the ingenious „The Great Gig In The Sky“ – everyone knows them and can still look forward to even better versions.

Conclusion

All just adulation? Feedback of an eternal PINK FLOYD fan who is not critical enough? You can see it that way. However, you can also assume that such a fan looks at and listens to the new material more critically than someone else – because he knows it from the original albums, which he listened to dozens of times on the record player – long before there were CDs or the unspeakable streaming settled on this planet.
Buy it? Absolutely! If you have the wherewithal and sensibilities, the box is worth it. If you want something cheaper, the two vinyls will probably do – especially the live album.
