PAUL THORN – „Best OF…“ inklusive Acoustic Show

English Version

PAUL THORN is a singer and guitarist from Tupelo, Mississsippi, who cavorts somewhere between Southern and Roots Rock, but who eludes a clear classification.

English version of this review below…

The band consists of singer and guitarist Paul Thorn, whose speciality is the slide guitar next to his grater voice. He is sometimes referred to as the Joe Cocker of the American South.
Him support was until recently given by Bill Hinds, who provided the backing vocals and left-handedly played the Dobro and also slide guitar. Since the end of May his successor is known, Chris Simmons has taken his place.
Drums and percussion are mastered by Jeffrey Perkins, also percussion, but also keyboard and mandolin are Michael Graham’s contributions. Ralph Friedrichsen, for his part, shines with his skills on bass and another voice in the background.
Paul Thorn and his band are well known for being a good bit more concise and sometimes harder live. So a studio album can only give you an idea of this power.

Thorn is not easy to classify musically. That’s why the 16’s album „Best Of Pauk Thorn“ should be a good introduction for those of you who don’t know the man (yet). This review also refers to this album. In a special way this is actually a double album. If you buy the record, you get a download code for an acoustic show, which contains most of the tracks of the album.
The assignment to Americana is just as correct as the names Roots Rock. Southern Rock could most likely fall off the ranks, as we, especially in Europe, equate this genre with rather harder rock music – Sothern Rock are ZZ TOP, the BLACK CROWES or MOLLY HATCHETT, but also a ZAKK WYLDE or the currently very successful BLACKBERRY SMOKE.

Mir personally lacks the assignment to the blues, Thorn’s vocals and his guitar playing contain a lot of blues elements. On the present album „Snake Farm“ is a good example, also „Burn Down The Trailer Park“ spreads this mood, this groove.
It is clear that with a man with this creative power and creativity a Best Of album can only show an excerpt. But this version seems to me to offer a pretty good cross-section of what Thorn has delivered in the last 20 years.

Resume and Europe tour

Why am I writing something about an album that has been on the market for three years? Because it can help you decide if you want to see Thorn live at one of his concerts in autumn. For us Swiss it might take a bit more persuasiveness, because Thorn unfortunately leaves our beautiful country out on his European tour. The German concerts also take place in the northern half of the country, Sweden and Denmark are also not exactly around the corner, Brescia and Ravenna are beautiful, but you also have to go there a bit. Nevertheless, if you want to take on the long WEg or live in the region of one of the concerts anyway – an evening full of cool sounds and a good mood should be guaranteed, as Thorn plays in rather small clubs – which often does the mood good.
