Eric Bass? Klar, der bedient doch den gleichnamigen Viersaiter bei SHINEDOWN, jener amerikanischen Rock-Grunge-Metalband, die bereits sieben Studioalbem eingespielt hat und bei jedem Album aufzeigt, wie vielschichtig sie sind, wie viele Gesichter sie haben, ohne ihre Identität zu verlieren.
Wenn man jetzt weiss, dass Eric Bass mitverantwortlich für die meisten Songs ist, darf man getrost hohe Erwartungen an sein Solo-Debut haben. Mag er sie zu erfüllen? Ist es mehr als ein Quasi-Shinedown-Album?

Ich bin begeistert, richtig begeistert! Ja, das Album atmet SHINEDOWN, wie sollte es auch anders? Schliesslich hat es der kreative Kopf der Band geschaffen. Es ist aber weit weg von einer Kopie. Es ist unheimlich vielseitig, vereinigt die unterschiedlichsten Genreeinflüsse. Es ist ein mutiges Album, weil man versucht ist, es in irgendeine Schublade zu stecken und das gründlich misslingt. Nach dem ruhigen und doch druckvollen Opener „A World Unseen“ brettert er den Musikbegeisterten das Metalbrett “ The New Gods Of War“ um die Ohren. Wobei Metalbrett? Naja, der Track vereinigt fette Riffs, schnelle Doubleblasts und weitere Elemente des Metal, ist aber gleichzeitig symphonisch, weil ein Chor an Stimmen den Refrain trägt, ist gleichzeitig progressiv, sehr experimentell.
Mit „Azalia“ erwartet er wiederum, dass sich Hörer und Hörerin mit einer Art MUSE-Song auseinandersetzt – episch und gleichzeitig einsilbig. Melodische Pianoeinlagen, eine einzigartige Stimme – der Mann beherrscht sein Metier und knallt uns eine unglaubliche Ladung an Können vor den Latz – inklusive Synthesizer-Einsätzen, von denen wir glaubten, sie gehören der Vergangenheit an.

Dann wäre da noch „Mind Control“, eine Art Punksong mit Rockattitüde – und einmal mehr einem Gesang, der dafür garantiert, dass Eric Bass bei einem allfälligen Abgang von Brent Smith bei SHINEDOWN problemlos einsteigen und die Lücke weitgehend schliessen könnte.
Was soll man sagen? Eric Bass ist ein absolutes Multitalent, ein extrem kreativer Kopf, einer, der keine musikalischen Grenzen sprengen muss, weil er keine solchen Grenzen kennt oder akzeptiert. Seine Musik ist keinem Schema unterworfen, sie ist vielmehr ein Konglomerat aus all seinem Wissen und Können als Multiinstrumentalist, Songschreiber und Produzent. Und; der Mann ist Autodidakt, hat sich alles selber beigebracht, was er brauchte.
Soll ich jetzt zu jedem Song etwas schreiben? Nö, denn im Gegensatz zu Eric Bass und seinen kreativen Fähigkeiten könnten mir die richtigen Worte, die passenden Formulierungen ausgehen. Manchmal muss man einfach etwas ehrfürchtig sein und geniessen, dass man das Privileg hat, Musik zu hören, bevor sie auf den Markt kommt. Manchmal ist es schon cool, wenn unter den vielen Promoanfragen eine solche Perle zum Vorschein kommt…

Fazit

„Eric Bass Presents: I Had A Name“ hat alles, was es braucht, um mein Album des Jahres zu werden. Es stortzt vor Kreativität und Vielfalt, ist musikalisch hochprofessionell und grenzenlos innerhalb des weiten Fächers von Rock und Metal.
Kaufen? Was soll die Frage? Das ist eine Perle, die jede Musiksammlung adelt. Hammer!

Yes, the album breathes SHINEDOWN, how could it be otherwise? After all, the creative head of the band created it. But it is far from a copy. It is incredibly versatile, combining the most diverse genre influences. It’s a brave album because you’re tempted to pigeonhole it and it fails miserably. After the calm yet powerful opener ‘A World Unseen’, he hits the music fans with the metal track ‘The New Gods Of War’ around the ears. What metal track? Well, the track combines fat riffs, fast doubleblasts and other elements of metal, but at the same time it is symphonic because a choir of voices carries the refrain, and at the same time it is progressive and very experimental.

With ‘Azalia’, he again expects listeners to engage with a kind of MUSE song – epic and monosyllabic at the same time. Melodic piano interludes, a unique voice – the man has mastered his craft and is serving us up an incredible amount of skill – including synthesiser parts that we thought were a thing of the past.

Then there is ‘Mind Control’, a kind of punk song with a rock attitude – and once again vocals that guarantee that Eric Bass could easily take over from Brent Smith in SHINEDOWN if necessary and largely fill the gap.

What can you say? Eric Bass is an absolute all-rounder, an extremely creative mind, someone who doesn’t have to break any musical boundaries because he doesn’t know or accept such boundaries. His music is not subject to any scheme; it is rather a conglomeration of all his knowledge and skills as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer. And; the man is self-taught, taught himself everything he needed.

Should I write something about every song? Nah, because unlike Eric Bass and his creative abilities, I might run out of the right words, the appropriate phrases. Sometimes you just have to be a little reverent and enjoy the privilege of hearing music before it comes onto the market. Sometimes it’s pretty cool when such a pearl comes to light among the many promo requests…

„Eric Bass Presents: I Had A Name“ has everything it takes to be my album of the year. It overflows with creativity and diversity, is highly professional in musical terms and knows no bounds within the wide range of rock and metal.
