MUTZ & THE BLACKEYED BANDITZ – „Stardust“

Was also bringt das Album? Dann viel Abwechslung, es gibt Metalbretter wie „Hammer Of The Gods“.

Bei „Where We Belong“ verschmelzen Americana mit Blues – sowas in Richtung BOB SEGER.

english version

Covid makes it possible that the present album of MUTZ & THE BLACKEYED BANDITZ will be released soon, but has been ready since already 2019. Nice anyway that Mutz and his men now let it loose on the world.
Mutz’s real name is Moritz Hempel, he is a solo singer-songwriter and frontman of the thrashers DRONE. Now he releases an album with his third project MUTZ & THE BLACKEYED BANDITZ. What makes a musician realize himself in three such different musical styles? I once speculate that it could be the desire for variety or the need to live out his creativity „without limits“.
But does that make sense, and can a person really do that? The demands on the voice are very different in the three genres. MUTZ can do it, because his voice is characterized by an enormous power and variability. In addition, he has very good musicians on board with DRONE and the BLACKEYED BANDITZ. MUTZ himself takes care of the rhythm guitar, Tony Mulkes plays the solo guitar, Florian Hempel the bass, Felix Hoffmeyer works on the drums and Tobias Burmeister serves the piano and the keyboards.

So what does the album bring? On the one hand eleven tracks with a total playing time of just under fifty minutes. Then a lot of variety, there are metal boards like „Hammer Of The Gods“. „All Along“ sounds then again like a midtempo rock anthem in the style of the eighties, Mutzen’s voice comparatively gentle. Exciting is „Dust_Bone“, on the one hand it sounds like a reference to TOM WAITS or NICK CAVE, on the other hand like a classy rock number.

„Through The Night“ on the other hand is a ballad with a strong folk touch – could somehow come from Ireland. „Stardust“, on the other hand, I give the predicate Southern Rock of the nicer kind, since the genre is also characterized by real breakers. A slowblues-ballad-combination can be found in „Bye Bye Bird“ – here the keyboards play a big role for once – it could even be a Leslie who is involved. Where We Belong“ is a fusion of Americana and Blues – something like BOB SEGER. Finally we landed on the blues with „Last Grain Of Sand“, another folk number closes the album „Hollow Man“.
While writing this review I realize how difficult it is to put the diversity of this album into words, you have to listen to the tracks to understand what I want to say.

conclusion

Mutz shapes the album from the first note to the last with his blend of rock pipes and songwriter vocals. The album fascinates almost throughout, seems round and has only a few musical „weaknesses“.
Who once again wants to hear an album that covers the most diverse musical directions and styles, who likes a charismatic, broadband voice is well served here. Thus nothing like in the analog or digital music stores and bought the album – from 19.8.22 it is available!
