Let’s start right away; whoever makes music like this has a hard time with me – almost automatically one of my absolute favorite bands becomes a reference – ARCH ENEMY. However, I am also aware that in this comparison actually everything craps out – more or less. Of course, among every top band there are some less topping, nothing destotrotz good bands. Among the female fronted growl bands there would be JINJER for example – or MISSION IN BLACK.

The lineup of the band reads as follows: Andy „Black“ Flache – drums and mastermind, Eddie Stübner – guitars, Daniel Tschoepe – guitars, Simon Schorp – bass and Steffi Stuber – vocals. What the front woman has to offer, she proved impressively to a slightly overwhelmed audience of millions at THE VOICE GERMANY – her interpretation of LAMB OF GOD’s „Ghostwalking“ remains more than in memory. This brings us back to my reference; Steffi Stuber actually belongs to a similar league as Tatiana Shmailyuk (JINJER) or Alissa White Gluz (ARCH ENEMY) – she has an extraordinarily powerful organ and masters growls as well as clear vocals. With this extraordinary talent – can a band do more than just be an accompanist? Yep! The guys – especially mastermind Andy Black – act rather „in the background“ on stage, but musically they play at eye level, making the power pack complete. A front woman – as good as she is – seems a bit lost without fat guitar riffs, a precise bass and powerful drums. MISSION IN BLACK are a more than solid overall event.

After so much adulation – what does the album have to offer? First, 10 tracks under the motto „Killers, No Fillers!“ For me, really no track falls off and I can’t think of any that I would single out as a special play tip.
For example, in „Silence Of A Distant Sky“ the guitar work impresses me, the solo part at the end of the track is awesome. That’s how I like it – not overly fast, not ornate, but every note a hit.
When it comes to title tracks, bands always seem to have something in mind somehow, they seem to be important. Either because there’s an album title to write a title track to, or because there’s a track that’s so meaningful that they name the album accordingly. „Profit Reigns Supreme“ is really a banger. It’s where those slightly frantic drum parts – where I always slightly feel like the drummer has another appointment – combine with a steep wall of power and precision in the guitars and bass, and the voice soaring above it all. Again, there’s an awesome guitar solo and bass work that provides a foundation for the song to stand on. Otherwise, the track is a hookliner with alternating parts – on the one hand death metal board with growls, on the other clean parts with anthemic garb. All this is neatly packed into a single song – terrific!

Conclusion

The high rating on my part is based on a disc that was technically cleanly implemented, celebrates a song fireworks and shows the quality of the individual protagonists – Steffi Stuber is indeed a highlight, but the guys need to hide just as little. Let’s hope that the Swabians finally achieve the success they deserve. You can support that by buying their album!
