MISSION IN BLACK – „Divinity of Lies“ out now und frech!

Da kommt mal wieder so einen süddeutsche Metalltruppe daher, bringt ein neues Album und klaut dann hemmungslos…

…wobei, so schlimm ist es definitiv nicht. Beim Track „Something To Die For“ wähnte ich mich irgendwie ganz kurz bei AMON AMARTH’s „Twilight Of The Thundergod“. Ist es natürlich nicht, sondern eben die Melodic Deather von MISSION IN BLACK.

Wenn ich MISSION IN BLACK höre – also den Bandnamen – dann muss ich immer aufpassen, dass ich zuerst „Ghost Walking“ aus der Birne kriege. Diesen LAMB OF GOD Track hat Frontfrau Steffie Stuber vor Dekaden mal den Juroren von „Germany’s Next Topcoaches“ um die Ohren geknallt. Genial übrigens und immer noch auf Youtube zu finden.
Aber eben, Schnee von vorgestern und eine Episode, welche mit der Band nichts zu tun hat und auchnciht mit der musikalischen Eigenständigkeit derselben. Die Band aus Baden Württemberg besteht aus oben genannter Fronterin sowie Andy „Black“ Flache, Gründervater und Drummer, Eddie Stübner an der Gitarre, Daniel Tschoepe ebenfalls Gitarre und Simon Schorp am Bass.

Mich hat das Album vom ersten Track an gepackt. Bereits das Intro öffnet eine Türe, die ich so nicht erwartet habe. Nach dieser guten Minute hätte auch ein Industrial Track oder ein Stück Neue Deutsche Härte kommen können.
Über alle Tracks hinweg hat mich einmal mehr die Kraft in der Stimme von Stefanie Stuber beeindruckt. Diese Growls kennt man sonst nur von ganz grossen Stimmen wie Alissa White Gluz oder Angela Gossow. Da könnte gut und gerne ein kräftiger Mann dahinterstehen wie ein Chrigel Glanzmann von ELUVEITIE.

Die meisten Tracks auf dem Album spielen musikalisch nahezu auf einer Höhe mit bekannteren Exponenten des Genres wie etwa AMORPHIS, auch AMON AMARTH oder ARCH ENEMY in der neuen Version. In den Klarpassagen unterscheidet sich Stubers Stimme deutlich von anderen Metalfrauen am Mikrofon. Die Stimme ist insgesamt voll und raspy, erreicht hier aber nicht die Qualität beispielsweise von Frau White Gluz. Allerdings; wir reden hier von einer Band, die noch weit vom Olymp des melodischen Death Metal entfernt ist. Und das nicht unbedingt wegen ihrer Qualität.
Neben den Vollgastracks gibt es auch zwei Ausnahmen, die mir sehr gut gefallen. Mit „World Of Demise“ legen sie einen epischen Midtempotrack auf und „Fighter“ baut viele Hardrockattribute ein – das kraftvolle Gitarrensolo zu Beginn und die Klarstimme während es gesamten Songs beispielsweise.
Rhythmisch etwas „aus dem Takt“ ist „As Mountains High and Oceans Deep“. Damit meine ich natürlich nicht, dass die Band den Takt verpasst oder so, sondern die für das Genre ungewöhnliche Rhythmisierung.
Unerwartet ist dann der Schluss; ein rein instrumentaler Ausklang, sanft und stark an klassische Töne angelegt.

Fazit

„Divinity of Lies“ ist noch das Oberhammeralbum des Jahres weltweit – will es wohl auch nicht sein. Es ist aber ein starkes Stück Musik, verwurzelt im Genre mit Blick über den Tellerrand, musikalisch hochstehend und absolut abwechslungsreich. Ich finde, das Album kann man sich getrost antun, „kaufen“ ist die einzig mögliche Empfehlung.

Whenever I hear MISSION IN BLACK – the band’s name, that is – I always have to make sure I get “Ghost Walking” out of my head first. Frontwoman Steffie Stuber belted out this LAMB OF GOD track to the judges on “Germany’s Next Topcoaches” decades ago. Brilliant, by the way, and still available on YouTube.
But anyway, that’s ancient history and an episode that has nothing to do with the band, nor with their musical originality. The band from Baden-Württemberg consists of the aforementioned frontwoman, as well as Andy “Black” Flache, founding member and drummer, Eddie Stübner on guitar, Daniel Tschoepe also on guitar, and Simon Schorp on bass.

The album had me hooked from the very first track. The intro alone opens a door I hadn’t expected. After that first minute, an industrial track or a piece of Neue Deutsche Härte could easily have followed.
Across all the tracks, I was once again impressed by the power in Stefanie Stuber’s voice. You usually only hear growls like that from truly great voices such as Alissa White Gluz or Angela Gossow. You could easily imagine a powerful man behind it, such as Chrigel Glanzmann from ELUVEITIE.

Musically, most of the tracks on the album are almost on a par with better-known exponents of the genre such as AMORPHIS, as well as AMON AMARTH or ARCH ENEMY in their newer incarnations. In the clean passages, Stuber’s voice differs significantly from other female metal vocalists. Overall, the voice is full and raspy, but here it doesn’t quite reach the quality of, say, Ms White Gluz. However, we’re talking about a band that is still a long way from the pinnacle of melodic death metal. And not necessarily because of their quality.
Alongside the full-throttle tracks, there are also two exceptions that I really like. With “World Of Demise”, they deliver an epic mid-tempo track, and “Fighter” incorporates many hard rock elements – the powerful guitar solo at the start and the clean vocals throughout the entire song, for example.
“As Mountains High and Oceans Deep” is rhythmically a bit “off the beat”. By that I don’t mean, of course, that the band misses the beat or anything, but rather the rhythm that’s unusual for the genre.
The ending is then unexpected; a purely instrumental finale, gentle and strongly reminiscent of classical tones.

Conclusion

“Divinity of Lies” isn’t quite the standout album of the year worldwide – nor does it seem to aim to be. It is, however, a strong piece of music, rooted in the genre yet looking beyond its boundaries, musically sophisticated and absolutely varied. I think you can safely give this album a listen; “buying” it is the only possible recommendation.
