M.I.GOD. – sophisticated Metal oder so

Mal kurz am SUMMERBREEZE einen Schwatz gehalten, eine CD in die Hand gedrückt bekommen und versprochen, eine Review zu schreiben, wenn sich die Scheibe länger als eine Umdrehung in meinem Auto hält…

So viel ist schon einmal klar, die Scheibe hat mich während drei Stunden auf dem Heimweg vom SBOA beschäftigt. Dabei habe ich mich zwar relativ schnell an den Sound als solches gewöhnt, bei jedem Neustart kamen aber weitere Details zum Vorschein.
M.I.GOD. sind ein Quintett aus Süddeutschland, das sich schon seit gut eineinhalb Dekaden auf Bühnen und in Clubs herumtreibt.
Der freundliche Mann, der mir die Scheibe persönlich ausgehändigt hat, ist Sänger Max Chemnitz. Uli Holzermer traktiert den Lead-Sechssaiter, Dan Hess die zweite Gitarre, beide singen auch backing vocals.
Eric Wunderlich spielt die Drums und Mick Steger werkelt am Bass. Also typische Rockbandbesetzung: vier Musiker und ein Bassist. Kleiner Scherz vom Kollegen Matt Bischof – aber gar nicht mal so schlecht…

Was man sagen kann; zumindst ein Teil der Jungs muss relativ hell auf der Platte sein, denn sonst kriegt man ein solches Werk nicht zustande.
Auch nach dem mehrfachen Durchhören frage ich mich; warum zum Teufel sind die noch nicht bei einem richtigen Label? Vielleicht wollen sie ja nicht, eine andere, vernünftige Erklärung kommt mir nicht in den Sinn.

Was kann man nun zur Musik sagen?
„Specters On Parade“ heisst das Machwerk, was soviel bedeutet wie „Gespenster bei der Parade“. Und so ähnlich fühle ich mich beim Hören – wie jemand, der einen Film schaut, irgendwo zwischen Science Fiction und Horror, sich dabei präsent fühlt aber nicht sicher ist, ob er wirklich vorhanden ist. Geradezu genial ist, wie der Erzählstrang des Album aufgebaut wird – die einzelnen Tracks werden durch Soundeffekte ergänzt und untereinander verbunden.
Musikalisch ist das Album die intelligenteste und abwechslungsreichste Scheibe, die ich seit Langem gehört habe. Dabei kann ich hier gleich klarstellen – die Jungs lieben nciht nur, was sie tun – sie können es auch. Kein schräger Ton, keine Phrase, die nicht passt oder deren Berechtigung nur schon diskutiert werden müsste.
Kommt dazu, dass das Album teilweise ein richtiges Brett ist – beispielsweise „Solitary Ghost“ ist Progmetal vom Feinsten mit jeder Menge Wumms.
Was mich beinahe am meisten beeindruckt, sind die Stimmen. Ich weiss zwar nicht im Einzelnen, ob alle Einzelpassagen von Chemnitz stammen, sie sind aber einfach genial – clear oder gegrowlt. Und falls nicht, dann sind die Backgrounder ebenfalls Hammer.
„Titans Of The Void“ ist ein Track, der zeigt, dass die Jungs schon eine Weile am Start sind und auch wissen, was old school und thrash bedeuten. Der Track wurde mit solcherlei Anleihen gewürzt und wächst deutlich darüber hinaus.
Ach ja, das hätte ich beinahe vergessen, die Jungs haben auch noch Eier. Schliesslich gibt es nicht sooo verdammt viele Bands, die Tracks mit über acht Minuten Spieldauer auf eine CD brennen – von DREAM THEATER einmal abgesehen. Das ist ein gutes Stichwort – DT könnten sich die Voice von M.I.GOD. einmal ausleihen – das würde ihre Qualität steigern! Wer solche Songs schreiben kann, ohne dass sie langweilig werden, darf sie auch veröffentlichen. Hier ist es der Titeltrack „Specters On Parade“.
Fasziniert hat mich auch „Tears Of Today“ – definitiv einer der Songs, der auch Radiopotenzial hat. Das meine ich hier für einmal nicht negativ. Der Track fährt ein und setzt sich fest. Max Chemnitz beweist hier seine stimmlichen Fähigkeiten einmal mehr eindrücklich.

Fazit
MAx Chemnitz wird im Booklet der CD zitiert: „The cruical factor is the choice you make, which path you walk!“ Oder auf gut germanisch: „Der entscheidende Faktor ist die Wahl, die du triffst, welchen Weg du gehst! Da gibt es einzig hinzuzufügen: M.I.GOD haben den richtigen Weg gewählt – es wird Zeit, dass das die Rockradios und die grossen Label kapieren.

That much is already clear, the disc kept me busy for three hours on my way home from SBOA. Although I got used to the sound as such relatively quickly, every time I restarted the band more details came to light.
M.I.GOD. are a quintet from Southern Germany who have been playing on stages and in clubs for more than a decade and a half.
The friendly man who personally handed me the disc is singer Max Chemnitz. Uli Holzermer maltreats the lead six string, Dan Hess the second guitar, both also sing backing vocals.
Eric Wunderlich plays the drums and Mick Steger works on the bass. So typical rock band line-up: four musicians and one bass player. A little joke from my colleague Matt Bischof – but not so bad at all…
What you can say; at least some of the guys have to be relatively bright on the record, because otherwise you can’t make such a work.
I also ask myself after listening through it several times; why the hell aren’t they on a real label yet? Maybe they don’t want to, another reasonable explanation doesn’t cross my mind.

What can we say about music?
„Specters On Parade“ is the name of the work, which means „ghosts at the parade“. And that’s how I feel when I listen – like someone watching a movie, somewhere between science fiction and horror, feeling present but not sure if it really exists. It’s almost ingenious how the narrative strand of the album is structured – the individual tracks are complemented by sound effects and connected to each other.
Musically, the album is the most intelligent and varied disc I’ve heard for a long time. But I can make it clear right here – the guys don’t just love what they do – they can do it too. No weird tone, no phrase that doesn’t fit or whose justification only needs to be discussed.
In addition, the album is partly a real board – for example „Solitary Ghost“ is Progmetal at its best with a lot of Wumms.
What impresses me the most are the voices. I don’t know in detail if all single passages come from Chemnitz, but they are simply brilliant – clear or growled. And if not, then the backgrounds are also awesome.
„Titans Of The Void“ is a track that shows that the guys have been around for a while and also know what old school and thrash mean. The track has been seasoned with such borrowings and grows way beyond that.
By the way, I almost forgot, the guys have balls, too. After all, there aren’t sooo damn many bands that burn tracks with more than eight minutes playing time on one CD – apart from DREAM THEATER. That’s a good keyword – DT could borrow the voice of M.I.GOD. once – that would increase their quality! If you can write such songs without getting bored, you can also publish them. Here it is the title track „Specters On Parade“.
I was also fascinated by „Tears Of Today“ – definitely one of the songs that also has radio potential. That’s not what I mean here for once negatively. The track retracts and gets stuck. Max Chemnitz proves his vocal abilities once more impressively here.
