JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13 – „Crash Of Life“

Joel Hoekstra hat bereits in einigen illustren Bands gespielt. NIGHT RANGER, WHITESNAKE, TRANS SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, neuerdings auch bei den REVOLUTION SAINTS als auch bei und mit vielen anderen namhaften Bands und Künstlern. Mit seinem eigenen Projekt „JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13“ geht es nun in die mittlerweile dritte Runde. Dabei hat Hoekstra die Zahl der Mitstreiter nochmals reduziert und den bislang am Mikrophon tätigen Russel Allen mit Girish Pradhan von GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES ersetzt. Mit Solo-Scheiben oder eigenen Projekten ist es oftmals so eine Sache bei Frontiers. Nicht selten muss der eine oder andere Name herhalten, um für vorgeschriebene Songs aus dem frontierseigenen Songwriterstall ein oft kurzzeitiges Projekt zu beleben. Oder es scheint ein Schmankerl für wohlverdiente Frontiers-Musiker, um sich einen „Traum“ vom eigenen Album zu erfüllen, vielfach mit unterschiedlichem Qualitätsgrad.
Bei JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13 scheint dies offenkundig anders. Einerseits kann die All-Star-Band um den Gitarrenhexer mit dem bereits dritten Album „Crash Of Life“ aufwarten, andererseits ist der gute Mann in sämtlichen Recording-Prozessen involviert und schreibt Songs auch selbst. Und: Das kann er! Denn bei dieser Band geht es nicht darum, den Namensgeber ins Rampenlicht zu heben, damit er den Fans da draussen zeigen kann, was er für ein virtuoser Tausendsassa ist. Nein, bei „Crash Of Life“ geht es um Songs. Und zwar richtig gute! Die 12 Stücke lassen bei einer Laufzeit von knapp 55 Minuten keine Langeweile aufkommen, und (fast) jeder Song zündet mit tollen Hooks, passenden Arrangements und guter Laune, die man den Musikern einfach mal zu attestiert. Neben Joel Hoekstra geben sich Vinnie Appice (Drums), Tony Franklin (Bass), Derek Sherinian (Keyboards), der bereits erwähnte Girish Pradhan (Vocals) und Jeff Scott Soto (Backing Vocals!) die Ehre, sowie einige Gastmusiker. Da kann ja eigentlich gar nichts schief gehen.
Auf „Crash Of Life“ findet man alles: Von Blues Rockigen Klängen über erdigen Hard Rock, Melodic Rock und natürlich den klassischen Balladen („Torn Into Lies“, ganz grosses Kino) ist ein Potpourri an Songs vertreten. Und trotz der Vielfältigkeit mag das Album mit einem roten Faden überzeugen. Hier ist nichts zusammengewürfelt, sondern einfach stimmig umgesetzt. Stellenweise erinnert mich das Werk an das von mir verehrte „Coverdale/Page“ Projekt aus den 90ern, das zwar etwas erdiger und bluesrockiger veranlagt war, aber mit gleicher Spielfreude aufwarten konnte.
Fazit
Mit „Crash Of Life“ schaffen JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13 für mich einen Anwärter auf die Top 10 des Jahres. Hier muss niemand irgend wem etwas beweisen, sondern man „trifft“ sich um gemeinsam Spass zu haben und Musik zu machen, an der wohl alle Mitstreiter selber Freude haben. Mit Girish wurde ein Sänger verpflichtet, der mit seiner tollen Stimme die Songs perfekt intoniert (und der hoffentlich nicht zum neuen Ronnie Romero mutiert der jede sich im darbietende Chance packt, auf gefühlt 1 Milliarde Alben zu spielen. Einfach auch mal ein Angebot ausschlagen!). Einzig das Cover vermag die Stimmung des Albums auf keine Weise zu transportieren, denn so steril und kalt geht es auf dem Album definitiv nicht zu!

RANGER, WHITESNAKE, TRANS SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, recently also with the REVOLUTION SAINTS as well as with and with many other well-known bands and artists. With his own project „JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13“ he is now entering the third round. Hoekstra has once again reduced the number of his comrades-in-arms and replaced Russel Allen, who was previously on the microphone, with Girish Pradhan from GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES. With solo records or own projects it is often such a thing with Frontiers. Not infrequently, one or the other name has to serve to enliven an often short-lived project for prescribed songs from Frontiers‘ own stable of songwriters. Or it seems a treat for well-deserving Frontiers musicians to fulfill a „dream“ of their own album, often with varying degrees of quality.
With JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13, this seems manifestly different. On the one hand the all-star band around the guitar wizard can come up with the already third album „Crash Of Life“, on the other hand the good man is involved in all recording processes and also writes songs himself. And: He can do that! Because with this band it is not about lifting the name giver into the limelight, so that he can show the fans out there what a virtuoso jack-of-all-trades he is. No, „Crash Of Life“ is about songs. And really good ones! The 12 tracks don’t let boredom arise with a running time of almost 55 minutes, and (almost) every song ignites with great hooks, suitable arrangements and good mood, which one simply has to attest to the musicians. Besides Joel Hoekstra, Vinnie Appice (drums), Tony Franklin (bass), Derek Sherinian (keyboards), the already mentioned Girish Pradhan (vocals) and Jeff Scott Soto (backing vocals!) do the honors, as well as some guest musicians. Nothing can really go wrong there.
On „Crash Of Life“ you can find everything: From Blues Rock sounds to earthy Hard Rock, Melodic Rock and of course the classic ballads („Torn Into Lies“, really great cinema) a potpourri of songs is represented. And despite the diversity, the album may convince with a common thread. Nothing is thrown together here, but simply coherently implemented. In places, the work reminds me of the „Coverdale/Page“ project from the 90s, which I adore, and which was a bit more earthy and blues-rocky, but with the same joy of playing.
Conclusion
With „Crash Of Life“ JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13 create for me a contender for the top 10 of the year. Here nobody has to prove anything to anybody, but they „meet“ to have fun together and to make music, in which probably all comrades-in-arms enjoy themselves. With Girish a singer was engaged, who intones the songs perfectly with his great voice (and who hopefully won’t mutate to the new Ronnie Romero, who grabs every chance he gets, to play on 1 billion albums. Just turn down an offer!). Only the cover is unable to transport the mood of the album in any way, because it is definitely not so sterile and cold on the album!
