HAND OF JUNO – „Psychotic Banana“

Vor etwa anderthalb Jahren hat mir Youtube die erste HAND OF JUNO single „Right Now“ vorgeschlagen. Also mal angeklickt, die ersten paar Sekunden haben mich so gar nicht gepackt, weil ich aber irgend grad mit dem Hund beschäftigt war, konnte ich nicht wegzappen. Zum Glück! Denn was nach diesen ersten Sekunden kam, hat mich schlichtweg umgeblasen. Es blieb nicht der einzige Durchlauf von „Right Now“ an diesem Abend.
Einige Besetzungswechsel und viele Monate später ist nun Anfangs November das erste Album der Band aus Italien erschienen: „Psychotic Banana“. Was HAND OF JUNO darauf gepackt haben, ist mitunter tatsächlich psychotic, keines Falls aber Banana! In Songs fast immer unter der 4 Minuten-Grenze packt die Band so viele unterschiedliche Stile, Tempowechsel und Ideen, da würden andere glatt 3 Alben draus basteln. Eins vorweg: This is not for the faint-hearted! Stilistisch irgendwo zwischen Industrial Metal, Modern Metal, Deathcore, Alternative Metal, Prog und was weiss ich noch alles prügeln und schreien sich die Damen die Seele aus dem Leib. Die Band lässt sich durch vermeintliche Regeln nicht einschränken und macht einfach, was sie will. Und das ist gut so.
Mit „Pray Or Die“ und „We’ve Built The Line“ ist der Einstieg in das Album auf der sicheren „Pop“ Seite. Der Hörer kann sich erstmal warm schaukeln, bevor es dann so richtig los geht. Mit „Right Now“ – meiner Einstiegsdroge in das HAND OF JUNO Universum – geht es dann langsam in eine andere Richtung. Wie ein Freund meinte, dem ich den Song aufgedrängt habe: „Very bizarre song. I feel like I would need to have Schizophrenia in order to fully appreciate it.“ Die Band dreht in „Destroy The Line“ nochmals etwas auf und wirft uns mit dem Refrain eine Rettungsleine hin, damit wir uns nicht völlig in den Wogen der Strophen verlieren. „Not A Game“ wartet mit einem latin-groovigen, italienisch gesungenem Zwischenteil auf sowie einigen musikalischen New Romantic/Wave Zitaten, bevor es kurzeitig wieder tief in die gurgende Endlosigkeit der Hölle eintaucht.
Wave-ig bleibt es auch auf „The One“ bevor der Wahnsinn mit „Psychotic Banana“ komplett seinen Lauf nimmt. Auch mit „Polline“ und „Hug My Death“ dreht die Band nochmals auf, bevor mit dem sanften „The End“ das Album knapp unter der 40 Minuten-Grenze schliesst.
Fazit
Viel passiert auf „Psychotic Banana“. Sehr viel. Und trotzdem gelingt es HAND OF JUNO einen roten Faden durch die 10 Songs des Debuts zu ziehen. Ein stilistisches Potpourri sondergleichen, sehr viel Krach gepaart mit sehr viel Melodie. Combining brutality and beauty, wie es in der Medienmitteilung heisst. Was soll ich sagen: Reinhören, sonst versteht man es nicht.

About a year and a half ago, Youtube suggested the first HAND OF JUNO single ‘Right Now’ to me. So I clicked on it, and the first few seconds didn’t grab me at all, but because I was busy with the dog at the time, I couldn’t just zap away. Fortunately! Because what came after those first few seconds simply blew me away. It wasn’t the only time I watched ‘Right Now’ that evening.
A few line-up changes and many months later, the band’s first album, Psychotic Banana, was released in early November. What HAND OF JUNO have packed on it is sometimes actually psychotic, but definitely not banana! In songs that are almost always under the 4-minute mark, the band packs so many different styles, tempo changes and ideas that others would easily create 3 albums out of it. One thing in advance: This is not for the faint-hearted! Stylistically, somewhere between industrial metal, modern metal, deathcore, alternative metal, prog and whatever else, the ladies beat and scream their souls out. The band doesn’t let supposed rules limit them and just does what they want. And that’s a good thing.
With ‘Pray Or Die’ and ‘We’ve Built The Line’, the album opens on the safe ‘pop’ side. The listener can warm up before things really get going. With ‘Right Now’ – my gateway drug into the HAND OF JUNO universe – it then slowly moves in a different direction. As a friend to whom I pushed the song said: ‘Very bizarre song. I feel like I would need to have schizophrenia in order to fully appreciate it.’ In ‘Destroy The Line’, the band turns up the heat a little and throws us a lifeline with the chorus so that we don’t get completely lost in the waves of the verses. ‘Not A Game’ features a Latin-groovy, Italian-sung interlude as well as some musical New Romantic/Wave quotes, before briefly plunging back into the gurgling endlessness of hell.
Wave-like, it also remains on ‘The One’ before the madness takes its course with ‘Psychotic Banana’. The band also turns up the heat again with ‘Polline’ and ‘Hug My Death’ before closing the album just under the 40-minute mark with the gentle ‘The End’.
Conclusion
A lot happens on ‘Psychotic Banana’. A lot. And yet HAND OF JUNO manages to draw a common thread through the 10 songs on the debut. A stylistic potpourri without equal, a lot of noise coupled with a lot of melody. Combining brutality and beauty, as the press release says. What can I say: listen, otherwise you won’t understand.
