GREY ATTACK – „Afterworld“
Erfreulich „anderes“ Album irgendwo zwischen THE CULT und TITO AND TARANTULA*

Gegründet 2012 haben es GREY ATTACK bislang erfolgreich verstanden, an mir vorbei zu schlittern. Nun landet ihr drittes Album „Afterworld“ auf meinem virtuellen Plattenteller. Tatsächlich wurde der Longplayer bereits 2022 unter Eigenregie veröffentlicht, Metalapolis fanden jedoch, dass die Scheibe einen „echten“ Release verdient hat und bringt nun „Afterworld“ zusätzlich als physisch unter die Hörerschaft. Das Intro „Into The Light“ kommt angenehm düster daher und geht gleich in den Titeltrack „Afterworld“ über. Als erstes überrascht der Sound des Songs, das Schlagzeug tönt, als ob es mit Schrauben und Muttern befüllt wurde: Es klingt hart, ungewohnt und erinnert irgendwo etwas an die Mitte-Achtziger Van Halen. Schnell hat man sich daran aber gewöhnt, und so wird der Schlagzeug-Sound auch zu einem Merkmal für GREY ATTACK. Die Songs selbst kommen nicht ganz so düster daher wie die Intro, Outro und dazwischen gestreute Sequenzen, rocken aber ganz ordentlich daher und erinnern mich stellenweise an THE CULT und ähnliche Dark Rock/Gothic Rock Combos. GREY ATTACK sehen sich jedenfalls als Heavy Metal Band ohne Klischees.
„Simple Life“ hat Ohrwurmcharakter „My Last Dance“ rockt geradlinig vorwärts und bietet auch ein paar Twin-Gitarren. Mit „Change Of Mind“ kann man über die Autobahnen dieser Welt brettern, bietet es doch einen ordentlich stampfenden Groove. „Lost“ wartet mit einem dieser – wie ich finde – nicht so zum Sound passenden Intros auf, aber sei’s drum. Denn versöhnt wird man dann mit einem Melancho-Rocker, der Live bestimmt toll abgeht.
„Where I Belong“ ist ebenfalls eine Mid-Tempo Nummer in Moll, und immer wieder kommen mir beim Hören von GREY ATTACK die Latino Chicano Rocker TITO AND TARANTULA in den Sinn, die so überhaupt nichts mit dem Sound von „Afterworld“ gemein haben. Ich werde mir die Assoziation mal noch weiter überlegen. Jedenfalls hätten GREY ATTACK bestimmt die „Titty Twister Bar“ mindestens ebenso erfolgreich gerockt. Es folgt mit „The End“ der erste Song, mit dem ich so gar nichts anzufangen weiss und der etwas gelangweilt vor sich hin plätschert. Dafür geht es mit dem abwechslungsreichen „I Still Can Fly“ gewohnt weiter, um letztlich das 9 Songs (plus je ein Intro und Outro) starke Album mit „Let’s Love This Life“ (ganz eurer Meinung!) abzuschliessen.
Fazit
Mit „Afterlife“ legen GREY ATTACK ein Album vor, das Ecken und Kanten hat und mit seinem Sound erstmal gewöhnungsbedürftig wirkt. Hier liegt keine Hochglanzproduktion, gestriegelt bis zur letzten Locke. Viel mehr trieft auf dem Album jede gespielte Note nach Schweiss und Herzblut. Die Songs sind rockig und dreckig und alles zusammen erinnert an eine Zeit, in der Musik noch gehört und nicht nur konsumiert wurde. Hat man sich auf „Afterworld“ eingelassen, lässt es einen auch nicht mehr so schnell los. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob GREY ATTACK erfolgreich alle Klischees vermieden hat. Mit dem dritten Album legen sie aber ein erfreulich „anderes“ Stück Musik vor, das mit guten Songs und toller Atmosphäre zu überzeugen weiss!

Founded in 2012, GREY ATTACK have so far successfully managed to slip past me. Now their third album „Afterworld“ lands on my virtual turntable. In fact, the longplayer was already released in 2022 under their own direction, but Metalapolis thought that the disc deserved a „real“ release and now brings „Afterworld“ additionally as physical among the listeners. The intro „Into The Light“ comes along pleasantly gloomy and goes straight into the title track „Afterworld“. The first thing that surprises is the sound of the song, the drums sound as if they were filled with nuts and bolts: It sounds hard, unusual and somewhere somewhat reminiscent of the mid-eighties Van Halen. But quickly you get used to it, and so the drum sound also becomes a feature for GREY ATTACK. The songs themselves don’t come across quite as dark as the intro, outro and interspersed sequences, but rock along quite nicely and remind me in places of THE CULT and similar dark rock/gothic rock combos. In any case, GREY ATTACK see themselves as a heavy metal band without clichés.
„Simple Life“ has earworm character „My Last Dance“ rocks straight forward and also offers some twin guitars. With „Change Of Mind“ you can cruise over the highways of this world, it offers a proper stomping groove. „Lost“ waits with one of these – in my opinion – not so fitting to the sound intros, but so be it. Because you are then reconciled with a melancho-rocker, which will certainly go great live.
„Where I Belong“ is also a mid-tempo number in minor key, and again and again when listening to GREY ATTACK the Latino Chicano rockers TITO AND TARANTULA come to my mind, which have nothing at all in common with the sound of „Afterworld“. I’ll think about the association some more. In any case, GREY ATTACK would certainly have rocked the „Titty Twister Bar“ at least as successfully. It follows with „The End“ the first song, with which I know so nothing at all to do and which plops a little bored before itself. But it continues with the varied „I Still Can Fly“ as usual, to finally close the 9 songs (plus an intro and outro each) strong album with „Let’s Love This Life“ (completely your opinion!).
Conclusion
With „Afterlife“ GREY ATTACK present an album, which has rough edges and with its sound at first seems to need getting used to. Here is no glossy production, groomed to the last curl. Much more, every note played on the album drips with sweat and heart and soul. The songs are rocking and dirty and everything together reminds of a time when music was still heard and not just consumed. Once you get into „Afterworld“, it doesn’t let you go that quickly either. I’m not sure if GREY ATTACK has successfully avoided all clichés. But with the third album they present a pleasantly „different“ piece of music, which knows how to convince with good songs and great atmosphere!
